I want to switch doorknobs so I have a lock on my door that leads to my inside apartment within a house. I tried taking the old doorknob off that as the "lock" but it won't come off. I put a piece of felt behind the flat part & it came off

Most large cities have an architectural salvage store. Also many antique malls and stores keep doorknobs and locksets around. I recently bought several black and white porcelain knobs from around 1900 for about $15.00 each (knobs only).
I do not recall the brand now, but there is a current doorknob assembly that has a square opening in the latch assembly dress the knob openings. If i recall the name of the new doorknob assemblies, i will update the post.
My house was built in 1930. Most of the original hardware is still here, I love it and like the look of it. However all of the bedrooms/bathrooms have unlocking knobs with a separate skeleton key lock below it.
