Salvaging the Sink and Removing Asbestos Tile
Salvaging the Sink and Removing Asbestos Tile

Bob meets Jim Kweskin of Fort Hill Construction who will serve as the project supervisor for the Brownstone remodel. Kweskin points out the salvage work that is taking place, including the removal of the pink sink. Mario Pagano of Pagano Plumbing removes the sink and tells Bob how unusual and desireable both the sink and faucet are to salvage specialists and remodelers. He also points out how improtant it is to save things during demolition. Bob reviews the demolition schedule with Kweskin and learns that asbestos tile was discovered in the kitchen, which meant calling an asbestos abatement contractor and slowing the demolition schedule by a couple of days. Kweskin expects demolition to be complete within a week.

Indoor Air Quality Basics
Indoor Air Quality Basics

Here s another great tip from BobVila.com. The American Lung Association reports that the death rate from lung disease has risen faster in the last decade than any other major disease. Countless days of school and work are missed due to respiratory illnesses every year. The EPA ranks poor indoor air quality as the fourth largest environmental threat to our country. Some of the worst polluters of the air you breathe hit right where you live. Biological particles like mold, animal dander, dust mites, bacteria and viruses occur naturally in substances. But in homes that aren t properly ventilated, or when filters aren t regularly cleaned, their concentrations can build up and make them into major irritants. Products of combustion from heating systems, gas appliances, fireplaces and wood stoves include poisonous and carcinogenic particles as well as carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide. And tobacco smoke has proven to be the last thing you want in your indoor air. Make sure your appliances are properly vented, install carbon monoxide detectors and ban smoking in your house to keep your family safe. Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, have also been linked to lung disease. They off-gas from a huge range of building products like engineered lumber, adhesives, carpets, paint and upholstery. But did you know they can also come from dry-cleaned clothing, synthetic lawn and garden fertilizers and pesticides? Other harmful chemicals can off-gas and accumulate from seemingly innocent cleaning products, air fresheners, candles, even personal care products. The best solution is to use natural alternatives wherever you can. Believe it or not, airborne lead dust and asbestos are still causing health problems. If you suspect your home contains exposed lead paint or asbestos that s been disturbed, get a professional inspection immediately. Bob Visits Oak Bluffs in Martha's Vineyard
Bob Visits Oak Bluffs in Martha's Vineyard

Bob takes the ferry to the island of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, and tours Oak Bluffs to recollect the town's Victorian history at the old Camp Meeting grounds. First stop is in front of the Wesley Hotel, where Bob talks about its history and location on the Island. Bob walks from there to the Methodist Meeting grounds. Which evolved from a circle of tents to small Victorian cottages. They are still decked out in Victorian architecture, trim and color schemes dating back to the 1860s. Alan Schwikert, of Ocean Park Realty gives Bob an overview of Island topography and popular places. He then gives Bob a tour of the Tabernacle built in 1879 and still bearing much of its original Ironwork and stained glass.

Bob Tours Homes on Martha's Vineyard

Bob and Alan visit a 1930s shingle-style Victorian just outside of Vineyard Haven with a 1500-square-foot porch and a boathouse with a fireplace. Bob, however, is looking for something more modest than this multi-million dollar property. Next stop is a smaller in town Victorian on a tiny lot with a Gothic entrance door, a walkthrough bedroom upstairs and a small turret. Bob decides this house does not exactly fit his criteria for the project.

Choosing a General Contractor
Choosing a General Contractor

Bob and Joe cover the best ways to choose a general contractor. Joe feels the number one way is by referrals. Start with your architect, if you dont have one try your local building inspectors and find out who is building up to code and those that pass inspection on the first try, that people are happy with. You can try your local building supply store, while many of the Big Box stores have boards with builders business cards, smaller suppliers may have personal contacts in the trades to share with you. Next and probably the best for small to medium size projects is to talk with neighbors and friends. If youre outgoing stop by a project you see going on in your neighborhood. Talk to the homeowner and the contractor if you can. Complement the work and if you feel it is done well get the contractors name for your future project. Three important things to ask the homeowner you contact; Was the job done schedule, was it done on budget and was it performed safely, cleanly and managed well? Back at the office, Joe shows off his massive flow chart for the complex Malibu project that includes over forty tradesmen and five months of construction timetables.
