Picket Fence Installation
Picket Fence Installation

Jay Triandafilou and a crew from Architectural Fence are on location to install the exterior fence in this episode. The fence is a square spindle ornamental picket fence made from white cedar with an opaque stain finish. The fence is installed section by section, progressing along the length of its run. The first step is to determine the landscape's grade, and set the first support post directly into the ground at a predetermined height. Postholes are dug using a mini Bobcat-like skid steer that is fitted with a boring attachment. The crew first digs a posthole about three feet deep, and then makes fine adjustments to the hole's depth with a shovel. With the post in the hole, it is checked for level and plumb, and then the hole is backfilled. Next, a section fence is brought in and attached to the post. The fence is checked for level and plumb before being secured, and then the next post is installed.

Installing a Maintenance Free Vinyl Picket Fence
Installing a Maintenance Free Vinyl Picket Fence

Bob meets Todd Skulksy of Perfection Fence as he installs the classic New England-style vinyl picket fence. This product has a wood look and is made of mono-extruded vinyl so that it has only one layer and will not show nicks or discolorations over time. The fence is installed without mechanical fasteners and has been engineered with the crimps molded into the rails. The rail locks into the post piece and the crimp holds it in place. Perfection Fence vinyl fences come in different styles, this one with traditional New England features like the Colonial cap and ball finial for the top. Skulsky explains that these fences are moderately priced and cost less than finished wood fencing, but more than an unfinished wood fence. They are maintenance free, however, which will save money over time.

Bob and the designer tour the new formal courtyard. They discuss the future of the plants shapes and how they will provide privacy to guests as well as the homeowners. The bluestone path is bound tightly with stone dust to provide years of service. One of the triangular gardens features pink roses and tall pink Cleome (Cleome hasslerana) also known as Spider Flower. Outside the unique white picket fence several Rose of Sharon plants are featured.

Landscaping in the Falmouth Affordable Housing Development
Landscaping in the Falmouth Affordable Housing Development

Bob joins John Druley at another of the Quaker Homes that is nearly completed and ready for landscaping. This home is virtually the same as the first-time homebuyer model that Bob visited under construction. Landscaping will be standard for all of the homes with gardens out front, a picket fence and rose bushes, a clamshell driveway, and cobblestone edging. Initially, the septic systems were problematic for Druley since the burden of eight homes with lawns on the groundwater system and adjacent salt ponds presented concerns for the enviromental review board. According to Title 5, denitrification systems costing about $7,000 apiece would be required for each of the homes. Druley proposed reducing the size of the lawns, using low-nitrate fertilizers, and passing the savings on to the two affordable homes in the development. This further reduced the selling price of the homes from $145,000 to $119,900.

Safety Railing Installation
Safety Railing Installation

Ironworker Jimmy Canka secures the rooftop deck's safety railing to its footings. The individual sections of the simple picket-style iron railing are put in place on site, and then welded together. Canka uses an arc welder to fuse the sections together. Bob points out how the fence is secured to the roof employing three separate building trades, the roofers, ironworkers and masons. Behind the railing is a parapet wall, which is topped with bluestone to prevent moisture from seeping into the masonry work.

Garage Door Opener Installation
Garage Door Opener Installation

Bob meets up with Ryley, who is installing a Craftsman garage door opener. Ryley starts out by pointing out the best place to start a project is with the instructions. They begin by setting up the track and mounting it to the wall over the door on one side and to the rafters on the motor side. The opener has an infrared sensor that stops the door from closing when an object is in the garage door's way. This was a new feature when the show originally aired.
