" showerhead can offer more pressure and use far less water. Installing a new showerhead is easy. If the neck of the showerhead is round, slide the strap range over the old showerhead and onto the collar. Tighten the strap and turn the showerhead counterclockwise. If there's a flat area on the sleeve of the showerhead, slide on an adjustable wrench. Remove any traces of plumber's tape or any sealant from the thread. If the shower stem is pitted or corroded, you may want to take this opportunity to replace it as well. To remove an old shower stem, slide off the chrome collar. Unscrew the shower stem with a plumber's wrench, placing it close to the wall, and gently but firmly turning it counterclockwise. As soon as it's loose, finish unscrewing it by hand. Wrap the thread of the new shower stem with 2 layers of plumber's tape, winding the tape tightly with the thread. Screw the shower stem in by hand and then gently snug it up to the correct position with a wrench. Slide a new chrome collar over the shower stem and up against the wall. Tightly wrap the thread at the end of the stem with 2 layers of plumber's tape. Now, hand-tighten the new showerhead onto the shower stem and then snug up the connection with a slip joint pliers. Do not overtighten. Slowly turn on the water to check to make sure the connections are not leaking. Your new energy- -efficient showerhead is ready for use."

Pliers are a relatively modern invention, and it is hard to imagine what people did without this versatile tool. There are a dozen or more kinds of pliers, and your toolbox should contain at least the big three: slip joint pliers, lock joint pliers, diagonal pliers. Also handy are rib joint, water pump, needle nose, long nose, locking, and lineman's pliers. When it comes to pliers, more is better.

Tool Runaround
Tool Runaround

A good way to reduce the time you spend searching for tools is to invest in duplicate sets to keep where you need them. For example, if you're always searching for pliers, socket wrench or screwdriver while in the basement, buy extras to keep there. Likewise, other candidates for "on site" tool kits are the kitchen, the garage, and the car.

Worn Down Screw
Worn Down Screw

When you've got a slotted screw that's been so badly damaged that a screwdriver won't turn the head, try this. Set a punch into the slot, off center to the right at an angle. With a hammer, you should be able to budge the screw just enough to finish with locking pliers. Replace it with a philips head screw.

Kitchen Tool Drawer
Kitchen Tool Drawer

You can save time around the house by having a few basic tools stashed in a kitchen drawer. Here are some of the most popular items: a hammer; screwdrivers, both phillips and flathead; a small tape measure; a utility knife; a torpedo level; pliers and an adjustable wrench; and the ever useful duct tape. Most important don't forget to put everything back when you are finished.
