How to Install Utility Shelves

" Industrial shelves can hold heavy loads, but for safety they should be secured to the wall. To secure storage shelves to a cinder block or concrete garage wall, you will need to use special masonry fasteners. Here's how to do it. There are varieties of soft metal anchors that are designed to working concrete and other masonry materials. These fasteners designed to fit snugly into a pilot hole when the metal is compressed against the masonry to hold the fastener in place. Determine where you'll be locating the shelving unit. Using the holes in the shelving unit as a guide, mark the location where the holes in the masonry will be drilled. Use a carbide masonry bit to drill pilot hole in the concrete. As outlined in the instructions that came with a faster and you planned use. Always wear goggles and a dust mask during this step. Based on the size of the shelf and what it has to carry. Use as many fasteners as you need. If you have a lot of holes to drill or drilling into unusually hard concrete, it's worth renting a hammer drill. These special drills hammer the concrete as the drill turns and are more effective in cutting into masonry. Blow out the holes and gently tap the anchor sleeves into place until the sleeve is flush with the wall. Note that the nut is unscrewed to the very top of the bolt so that the hammer does not damage the threads of the bolt. Screw the nut into the masonry fastener and using a socket set, tighten the fastener to pull the anchor compressing it against the concrete. Now loosen the nut and you can see how far you pull the anchor into the concrete. Remove the nut and washer. You're ready to secure the shelf. Position the shelving unit against the anchor points. Using a Spirit level, adjust the shelving unit until it is both plumbed and level. Lining up the holes with the masonry anchors, place the washer over the bolt and secure with the nut. Use a socket wrench to pull the shelving unit tight to the wall. Take care not to over tighten fasteners in the process. The shelving unit is now secure and ready for use."
