How to Replace a Lockset and Door Knob
computer-generated transcript - may not be 100% accurate
" Locksets wear and get banged up over the year. Here's how to quickly install a new lockset. Remove the screws holding the lockset in place. With the screws removed, the inside and outside parts of the lockset can be pulled apart. Now, move around to the edge of the door and unscrew the 2 screws that hold the deadlatch in place. Before you pull out the deadlatch, make a note of which way it's facing. You need to buy the right lockset to your door. When a door opens towards you and the knob is on the right-hand side, it is a right-hand door. When the knob opens towards you and knob is on the left-hand side, it is a left-hand door. If you purchased a lockset that is the same size as the one you're replacing, the process is simply reversed. Insert the new deadlatch into the hole at end of the door. Remember to insert the deadlatch in the same direction as the old one or the door won't latch. Now, insert the 2 halves of the new lockset and screw them in tight. With the lockset in place, it's time to replace the striker plate. Check to see if the new striker plate is the same size as the old plate. Unscrew and remove the old striker plate. Center the hole of the new striker plate over the existing hole in the door jamb. If the plate is slightly larger, cut the opening wider with a utility knife. Now, screw the new striker plate in place and your door is back in service."
