" The type of roof that we're using here at the energy wise house is called a standing seam metal roof. Now you might not think that the roofing materials would have anything to do with the energy efficiency of the home, but actually, this roofing system reflects 38% of the sun heat. With me today is Joe Shivari from Custom-Bilt Metals, and you're the roofing contractor. Tell us about this machine and how this process works from start to finish."
" Well, you get the coils. You let the coils in the warehouse. We bring them out to the job sites. We bring enough coils around the whole job. We setup, mix everything that's level. We could run up to---- The nice part about this portable roof, I mean, we could run this panel up to 60 feet."
" Wow."
" This roof in particular has 64-foot run so that's gonna be 1 continuous panel with no horizontal finish."
" That's good because you don't want those leaks."
" Right. Exactly. When we get out to the job site, the crew usually sets everything out, runs the panel to test our runs for cut list, and we know it prior to that. We come out, run the panel, stack, and then install the coils at a later date."
" Now, is this the maximum distance which you can get out of a machine like this?"
" Yeah, this varies. Actually, this machine will open up to a 20-inch wide panel and close down to a 12-inch down."
" Is there any advantage to 1 size over another?"
" No, not necessarily. This panel is good because it will, you could put this down to the 1/12 pitch. These few ribs and the metal here are called stiffing rib. They strike up the panel to get rid of the oil canning."
" Yeah, and is that much of an issue. I mean, do you, over time, do these dimensions change and make the roof look ripply? Steel expands and contracts so you will see that in the panel. The stiffing ribs hide a lot of that, making a stronger panel, so instead of from 16 inches, you actually have 4 inches you have. Some real forming in the metal."
" Well, it's a great lock. I mean,----"
" Yeah."
" it's architecturally, it's gonna go really well with this house, particularly the color. You would think that this would not reflect any of the sensed heat, but actually, it does."
" Yeah."
" It knows dark."
" And actually, a color of black can do that too, so this color is called antique patina that actually changes and do a topic tone almost."
" Yeah, there's you can see it change."
" Yeah."
" Very interesting. Now how long will it take you to do a roof like this?"
" We can basically real form the panels in a couple hours. The installer of this project is about 40, 4000 square feet, so that will take a contractor about an average of a week to do."
" Now what is the lifespan of this coating and how long will you expect this to last?"
" Yeah, this is kinda 500 paint. A lifetime warranted. The fade warranty is phenomenal. It actually has a 20 fade warranted so it's gonna basically look the same in 20 years from now."
" Can you walk on this roof after apply?"
" Yeah, this is applied directly to the deck so you're foot tracks will all be on, which is right over the plywood. "
" Do you use a standard underlayment or does this go straight over the wood?"
" Yeah, there's a couple different underlayment, different cities, different codes."
" Joe, it doesn't look like this would lend itself to putting fasteners through this metal. How do you fasten the stamp?"
" Well, actually, this is a---- There's no exposed rib on the full roof. This is a clip that could flock on it here. It's actually a sliding clip that allows for expanse and contraction. So we put the screw or the clip in play, screw it down to the deck, the next thing that comes over and locks the dell with no spoke screw."
" And do you have a standing seamers that comes along and clench that together?"
" Yeah, there's"
" so when you think about it, it's far less."
" Yeah. The initial investment is high, but it's rewarding."
" Now what is amazing standing here is that it's a very hot sunny day here, and you can really feel the heat raiding off of you."
" Yes."
" So----"
" The nice part about that is if you take this, you know, see that the [unk] actually releases all of its heat making it much cooler inside."
" It's very high in vicinity."
" Correct."
" Well thanks, Joe. I appreciate your being here."
" Thank you."
" And speaking of the coatings, coating is what really makes this roof so energy efficient."
" Let's go meet Bob Shickley from BASF Coating. Hi Bob."
" Hi Steve. Good morning."
" Well, as you can see, I'm here in the desert. It gets pretty hot. Now you have a roof coating product that's gonna make this house a lot cooler?"
" I think so. I think so."
" Tell me about it."
" Well, it's kind of 500, the base, and it's a 30-year warranty product. It has a reflective pigment in it that is ceramic in nature, and has a highly reflective and innocent type of effect to the roof so that when you're looking at the roof "
" asked for from the electric company. Obviously, less electric to be asked for, and hopefully, the less the cost of the electric bill."
" How durable is it?"
" The durability that we guarantee if for about 30 years. We have the standard product is guaranteed for 30 years, and when we do that, this pigment too, that product has already been on the market and has a pedigree of over 30 years."
" What the---- how is it applied?"
" It's applied in the coil process. The coil process is basically a continuous coating line. It cleans the metal, puts the primer on, cures it, put the top coat on, cures it, and screws it up on the other end, and then custom-build metal takes it from here to a job site or into their factory that will form a roof panel from it that has any length that you want to have to it so that it has no breaks in it, and then applies it to the roof. "
" Thanks. Great information."
" Nice to see you. Thanks very much."
