Painting Walls with High Gloss Paint

Bob goes into the bathroom where painter Dirk VanKoughnett is painting the walls. VanKoughnett is using a high gloss paint, a surface that is enjoying renewed popularity. Originally high gloss paint was used because it was more durable than other kinds of paint, but in modern times that is no longer the case. VanKoughnett explains that high gloss paint is more difficult to apply because all the light bouncing off the paint emphasizes flaws. A skim coat of joint compound was applied prior to the paint to ensure a smooth surface and fewer flaws. VanKoughnett is using a roller with a quarter inch knap to make sure there are less bubbles in the paint. Bob discusses with VanKoughnett the benefits of using the highest quality brush when working with high-gloss.

" Now, let's meet Dirk VanKoughnett, our painter."

" Hi Bob. How are you?"

" And we're in the bathroom here and what's exciting is we're doing a high gloss paint job in here."

" That's right Bob."

" Got a lot of call for those these days?"

" It's getting started to pick up again. They're used to use high gloss a lot only because they're so much more durable than other paint."

" Aha."

" It's gotten away from it and because the housing industry doesn't enough to round with the time it takes."

" Yeah. It does take more of time."

" This entire wall."

" When you do that they'd be more careful. Why do you have to prepare it more carefully?"

" You've got so much for the lights on from a high gloss paint. They way you see it right now, is almost that the gloss sheet is gonna be when it dries."

" Exactly. And if you've got the dry wall, which is the case nowadays, I suppose to plaster, you have to really be careful 'coz you'll see any kind of a bump in the wall."

" We skin coated these walls first and then we prime them after that."

" Did you? With joined compounds?"

" With joined compounds."

" Now, that's a good tip, yeah."

" [unk] them all out."

" Yeah. And what kind of a roller sleeve do you use?"

" I've got quartering snap on this."

" So, that's not very much at all, right?"

" Just real thin."

" Yeah."

" And what it does for us is not mix a lot of air into the paint at the same time, it gives us a lot of bubbles on the wall."

" So, you don't get the bubbles?"

" Any bubbles we do get, you can see a few up there, they will----will be gone by the time it's dry."

" What kind of a brush should you use when you're painting with the high gloss paint?"

" So, you've gotta use the best brush you can buy."

" Yeah."

" There's no sense skimping at it."

" And this is 50%----"

" China bristle and 50% Ox hair [unk]"

" China bristle is again a natural bristle, right?"

" That's correct."

" Yeah. So you pay a little bit of extra for the tool but you get a much better result."

Boost Resale Value with Paint
Boost Resale Value with Paint

Here's another great tip from BobVila.com. How do you ensure you ll get the selling price you want for your home in a buyer s market? Now is not the time to install those granite countertops you ve been dreaming of because you probably won t get your money back. To get the best price you can without breaking the bank, grab a roller or hire a painter. Paint is the tried-and-true, budget home improvement that realtors recommend. Pay special attention to the areas that potential buyers will see first. On the front fa ade or even just the area around the front door, scrape and repaint any peeling or flaking areas to improve that all-important first impression. Be sure to repair any damage, nail holes or cracks, and choose an eggshell or a matte paint finish to take the focus off any imperfections. If the paint s still in good condition, a light pressure wash will brighten it up and welcome visitors. If your front door is purple or your wallpaper saw Nixon impeached, now is the time to go for cream, white or beige. Some realtors even recommend repainting the whole interior in off-white to provide a clean slate. It might not be your style, but the more neutral your home s color palette, the more possibilities a buyer will see there, and that s where your work will pay off.
