Quechee Lakes Development

Bob looks at some examples of traditional Vermont style farmhouse architecture and then meets up with Michael Maynard, a member of the Quechee Lakes development team for a tour of the 5000-plus acres property. When the planned unit development project began in the 1960's Quechee Lakes was the first of its kind in the Northeast. Homeowners are predominantly empty-nesters who enjoy second homes in this pastoral community. The community boasts skiing, golf, polo, indoor and outdoor pools, and exquisite vistas.

" Well, Quechee Lakes was started in the late 1960's, and it was really the 1st of its kind in the Northeast. A group of gentlemen from Boston who worked for 3 or 4 years with Sasaki Associates, the large planting firm in Cambridge, Massachusetts put in together a master plan where they purchased a number of farms and a number of the buildings here in Quechee, and created this 5200 acre of plant unit development."

" 5200 acres."

" That's correct. How many houses eventually will fill it?"

" Our toll is it's built up to capacity and it's expanded to 6000 acres, it would be 2500 homes."

" Amazing. Now what are some of the benefits of living here?"

" There're quite a few. We have people ranging from primary residence with children who are raising their kids here, living here full time, to empty nesters. Most of our homeowners are 2nd homeowners. They live in Boston and Connecticut, New York. They come up here with their families on weekends, holidays, and summer vacation."

" This isn't just ski country, is it?"

" No. Quechee has its own private ski hill, but Quechee is probably best known for its golf. It has 2 18-hole championship courses. They've got trout fishing river. The yard of Quechee is run through the village."

" And of course, it's very centrally located."

" That's correct. Very easy to get to. They've got a big club house, workout facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, and a variety of organized programs for both adults and kids."

" And the house that we'll be building eventually will be available to a buyer here in Quechee Lakes."

" That's absolutely correct."

" Thanks Michael."

Cape Cod-Style Architecture and Royal Barry Wills

Bob visits Cape Cod with Dick Wills, who is carrying on the work of his father, architect Royal Barry Wills. Beginning in the 1920s, the senior Wills popularized traditional New England-style architecture. According to his son, he was so impressed by the scale and proportion that our forefathers maintained that he dedicated his considerable energies to adapting those elements for modern families. Along with the traditional Colonial, Wills also appreciated the qualities of the New England Cape, a style that is simpler and generally smaller than the Colonial. Dick Wills takes Bob on a tour around his own Cape-style home, pointing unique architectural features that highlight the flexibility of the style.
