Discussing Structured Wiring Options

Tim Woods of Internet Home Alliance discusses the basics of structured wiring and connectivity with Bob in the basement of the Quechee house. The IHA is an association of companies committed to bringing the "internet lifestyle" to consumers. Utilizing a DirecWay satellite dish from Hughes Networking systems to overcome the lack of high speed data transmission in Quechee's remote location, the homeowners will enjoy two-way satellite communications providing access for online computers and audiovisual equipment in every room. Tim explains the basics of structured wiring and shows Bob Home Director's integration plan.

" But let's say -- that Tim woods from the Internet home alliance. Targets and are you great -- what is the Internet home alliance well the Internet. Home alliance is a strong association of companies I'm from -- the founding members are Cisco Sears Panasonic convince this. General Motors and home director yeah all of them got together and committed to bringing the Internet lifestyle to the consumer. Okay and so in this house here in quechee Vermont yes we're trying to make we're going to try to make the Internet lifestyle available to whoever ends up buying this kind of bring it to life and -- second war well what what things are starting -- with a structured wiring. This Halloween but there's a satellite dish involved right there not a job base here that's right that's absolutely right. One of the unique things about the quechee site yeah home versus any other site is that this site. You can't get DSL you can't get broadband service can't get those kind of bomb. High data rate transmissions we have to go with two way satellite communications from Hughes corporation podcast called direct duo and it allows that two way communication via the satellite but then the cabling itself. Is what do I got here well that's that's a two plus two it's basically cat five and it's RJ and people would have. Kind of look at that as ethernet and cable. Write a pretty familiar with those two things and this is -- and ends up coming out looking like. I'm you've got your cable system right here -- crossing the night in pairs right and then you Gregory you're right. And what we're doing is we've pulled all those lines down. From the different rooms in the house you see them labeled we've got guest room dining room kitchen right every room in the house will have capabilities pretty much pretty much every room. And what comes out for the consumer looks like this. And and what consumers are really used to is seeing this -- home. What we're talking about is adding this dimension. Where you have the ability and the flexibility to put computers and an audio visual equipment and all the wonderful things that they're coming with Internet life style into every single room. And there's two cable connects -- two cable connections we have two cat five connections in here. And this allows us to do things like streaming video we're gonna have high definition TV. All of these types of things are allowable because we have this universal port in. Now somebody made a big deal about not. Being able that you guys install this until after the electrical was already Ian -- absolutely there's interference caused between the electrical system standard electrical system. And structured wiring connectors that kind of a home that's created by your electrical system and you need to get certain distance apart so you don't want to cross the wires or keep them too close together well known out of -- up because avoid the buzzes now. There's a plan up on the wall here that explains. -- Flexibility you can view you you're different different music in every room if you want to you have these great control panels are going to be on the wall. -- what's even batteries we've got this cubic web tablet it's wireless you'll be able here around the house with you. And you'll be able to control audio visual security all of us. Fabulous."

Here's one way to take advantage of the technology available for your home. It's called category 5 wiring. Category 5 wiring provides internet and fax connections 600 times faster than an ordinary phone line. Bundled with coaxial video cable, it allows you to view cable TV, your VCR, and even closed circuit cameras from any monitor in your home.

Bob meets Tim Woods from the Internet Home Alliance at the Home Director network connection center in the basement. It's where all the structured wiring comes in and where the main controls happen: 2 +2 (cat-5 and RJ), cable broadband, security link-up, telephone, etc. Because the homeowners are a dual career couple they need to be connected to each other (home office to the studio) and to the outside world in a broadband environment. In the kitchen Larry Hicks of Home Director is installing some cable for a universal 2 + 2 outlet for TV, telephone or data near the breakfast nook providing flexibility for use of a phone, screen, etc. Looking at the Alliance's wiring plan, Tim points out the security camera at the front door and the ADT iCenter security system. The study/screening room will be a real media center with speakers for dolby stereo running through the ceiling, cable broadband, and a Panasonic high definition TV. There willl be speakers throughout the house allowing different music to play in diffferent rooms all controlled from the audio center in the kitchen. The Cisco Aironet system is a wireless network for the home allowing the homeowner to put a wireless card into his laptop and wirelessly port the web anywhere in the house. Because this is an old house in which they are trying to preserve the original plaster and lath walls, the installation of the structured wiring has required different tools and is a much slower process than in new construction, but it can be done.

Networking, Entertainment, and Security Wiring for the Home

Bob Ryley meets with Ken Frankel from Lucent Technologies to talk about the new HomeStar wiring system. Ryley points out the outlet part of the system on the wall. These outlets, of which there are six in the house, connect into the basement. Ken explains that the HomeStar system takes care of television, phone, internet, and security for homeowners. Homeowners can be sitting in the living room and see who is at the front door without getting up. Cameras are linked into the television for exterior and interior monitoring. The wire connecting the outlets distributes voice, data, and video through the house. Bob then shows us the hybrid wire which consists of three wires on the inside. The first is a cable wire for television. The second is for video distribution and security monitoring, and the third is for telephone and computer. The telephone and data wire is the highest grade wire called a Category Five wire. Ken tells us that cat five is six hundred times faster than a regular phone wire and perfect for home office use. He points out that using HomeStar a homeowner can save money with the networking capabilities of cables linking various televisions and computers throughout the home.
