Reviewing Energy Efficient Products in the Home

At the Cobb Hill co-housing community, Bob and GC Mark Albee look at some of the energy efficient and eco-friendly products begin used. The home's large south-facing windows provide significant passive solar gain. They are Thermotech pultruded fiberglass windows from Canada and have Styrofoam insulation in them. For cost reasons Mark is using Thermotech's double glazed window with one low "E" coating. Because the glass and fiberglass have a similar expansion coefficient, you get a window that is tight through all seasons. The flooring is yellow birch from a mill in Maine. It's a certified sustainable product that is made from short pieces that would ordinarily be discarded, and there is a lot of color and grain variation to it creating a distinctive look.

" The windows are pretty enormous for a small building like this, aren't they?"

" Well, we wanted to get as much passive solar gain as we could from these south facing windows."

" Why that view is fabulous though, isn't it?"

" Isn't it nice?"

" So what kind of windows are these?"

" They are Thermotech windows. They're Canadian fiberglass window."

" So it's a fiberglass."

" They call is a pultrusion."

" It's pultruded."

" Yeah."

" Which is a little bit different than your normal vinyl or wood or aluminum windows."

" And you've got insulation inside there."

" That's right. The pultrusions all have a starter foam insulation in them."

" And what kind of, you know, what kind of other features do you get from this kind of window?-Well, this particular cross section shows some example of a triple-glazed window. In this application, we opted for cost reasons to go with a double blaze with 1 low E coating on it."

" Uh huh. And so, you've got the kind of situation here where I think expansion and contraction is pretty much at the same rate so you'd end up with a nice tight window, don't you?"

" That's correct. With 2 dissimilar materials like glass and fiberglass, the expansion coefficient is quite similar so that you may gain a tight window though all reasons."

" And that's important up here, isn't it?"

" Up here it's very important."

" The floor is pretty distinctive. What is it?"

" This is yellow birch flooring. It comes from a mill up in Maine. It's certified flooring."

" How come so many short pieces? Well, that's a part of the process. It's flooring that would normally be discarded because they are short. There's a lot of color, variation green, variations in it."

" So it's a savings in terms of the cost of the flooring?"

" That's correct. We're able to use the product that would normally be not used in simple flooring."

" It's got to be labor intensive to put all the flooring down?"

" It's very labor intensive."

" Yeah."

Combining Two Double Hung Windows
Combining Two Double Hung Windows

Bob explains the homeowners wish to have windows centered in the wall so that bookcases can be added. Since the homes windows were replaced just three years ago the crew is recycling the windows in the new project. Ryley and Bob demo the old frame and install supports for the combined window. Ryley shows how the dining room window in the den can make one great double-hung window. When the two windows are put together its called a mullioned window.

Insulated Windows with Between-the-Glass Blinds
Insulated Windows with Between-the-Glass Blinds

Bob is joined by Cordell Burton of Pella Windows, who shows him the enclosed, snap-in between-the-glass blinds that are being installed in the nursery. The interchangeable blinds snap-in easily between the two panes of glass. They have no cords, can be raised and lowered with a sliding button on the sash, and are free from dust and allergens. These windows are highly insulated for cold and sound as they have a fully insulated pane on the exterior and another pane on the interior. Burton shows Bob how any homeowner can install the windows, first by removing the old sash and stops, then sealing the window with Pella's self-sealing butyl tape. To prevent further heat loss, the sash-cord pocket is filled with expanding foam. We watch as the window is set in place, checked for level and plumb, shimmed, and nailed in for an easy do-it-yourself installation.
