Trimming Out Bathroom Windows

Bob checks in with Ryley who is trimming out the two windows over the vanity in the first floor master bath. The interior designer suggested that the two windows be trimmed out as one unit. To attach the broad 3 1/2 inch sill Ryley biscuits it and then screws it into the sill. The apron receives a 15 degree angled cut on each end. Ryley supports it with deadmen and then uses a nail gun to attach it. The window casing allows for a 1/4 inch reveal all around and then the header finishes the trim.

" Normally, you just come up to a window and you trim it to put the casings on, and you put an apron in the sealant, and that's it, but the interior designer suggested that we trim both of them as 1 unit because they came in after the plate was plastered----"

" Right"

" and decided they wanna put a mirror in the middle of it."

" So this will have 1 big mirror in the middle, and this will be continuous all the way aross and on the top, so what about this?"

" Well, we'll just have to pull these wires up. The electrician will."

" Yeah."

" They'll pull the wires out. We'll cap that off and---- [unk] should go up above the mirror, Bob."

" Okay. Above the mirror."

" Right."

" So the 1st step is to figure out how to attach this rather broad sill, right?"

" Yeah. Because it's pretty long enough so it's gonna be wide, 312 inches wide. So we really can't just nail it up there."

" Yes. Well, over here where Riley is about to market."

" Right."

" We talked about how to join it there. You're gonna use the biscuits?"

" You've got it. We're gonna put biscuit it and then we'll screw it into the sill and the biscuits will help keep it flushed across the top there."

" Okay."

" It fits that 1 there. If you can hold that."

" I got it."

" Let me get the other window."

" We wanna make sure we don't miss our marks of the biscuits joined perfectly."

" Then while I'm at it I'm gonna mark where these studs are because I wanna set a 3/18 hole in here so the screws we're gonna use. Okay, let's see 1 more right there. And the screws wanna go in so that they will grab. They will really grab the meanest width of the window they can."

" Right."

" So the [unk] is just a visual aid to drill the holes straight in there."

" Right."

" Okay. Now the apron receives a 15-degree angled cut on each end."

" Right."

" And that's, I guess, customary here. That's what they've done throughout the house."

" Okay. Now, well just position it. Prompt it up with the little bench man and shoot it. Alright. We got a 1/23 and a quarter inch reveal all the way around."

" Exactly. All the same side."

" Alright. And there's our header."

" Okay. I get a good view a little bit. Right there."

Combining Two Double Hung Windows
Combining Two Double Hung Windows

Bob explains the homeowners wish to have windows centered in the wall so that bookcases can be added. Since the homes windows were replaced just three years ago the crew is recycling the windows in the new project. Ryley and Bob demo the old frame and install supports for the combined window. Ryley shows how the dining room window in the den can make one great double-hung window. When the two windows are put together its called a mullioned window.

Insulated Windows with Between-the-Glass Blinds
Insulated Windows with Between-the-Glass Blinds

Bob is joined by Cordell Burton of Pella Windows, who shows him the enclosed, snap-in between-the-glass blinds that are being installed in the nursery. The interchangeable blinds snap-in easily between the two panes of glass. They have no cords, can be raised and lowered with a sliding button on the sash, and are free from dust and allergens. These windows are highly insulated for cold and sound as they have a fully insulated pane on the exterior and another pane on the interior. Burton shows Bob how any homeowner can install the windows, first by removing the old sash and stops, then sealing the window with Pella's self-sealing butyl tape. To prevent further heat loss, the sash-cord pocket is filled with expanding foam. We watch as the window is set in place, checked for level and plumb, shimmed, and nailed in for an easy do-it-yourself installation.
