Reviewing the Wood Burning Boiler Features

Back at the Cobb Hill co-housing community, Bob meets up with builder Kevin O'Hara who shows Bob the enormous Garn wood gasifying boiler that has just arrived. The boiler heats hot water by burning the particulate in a second chamber after the wood has been burned. The hot water will be sent throughout the co-housing for heat. Community members will manually feed the lumber which will be harvested right on the property as fuel for the boiler. The individual residences will be tied together with Ecoflex insulated underground pipe that runs throughout the project. Each pod (there are three in the community) will have its own backup gas boiler for when the temperature really drops.

" So Kevin, this enormous affair is gonna provide heat for all of the units in the whole compound, right?"

" That's right."

" What's it called?"

" This is a GARN wood gasifying boiler."

" GARN is the company that makes it."

" Yeah."

" Now, how old is this technology? Well, I know that they've had their boilers on the market for 16 years."

" Uh huh."

" I think the technology is a little older than that, but not much."

" Okay. And it's a liquifying boiler because it does what?"

" It's a gasifying boiler."

" Gasifying."

" Yeah. It will burn the particular---- In a 2nd chamber, after the wood is burned, it will take the particulates in the smoke and burn that again at about 2000 degrees."

" Wow."

" It would get rid of its own waste."

" Right, but you're heating water, right?"

" That's right."

" Okay."

" Sending that to all the buildings in the co-houses."

" So there's a series of coils in between the 2 chambers?"

" That's right."

" Got you. Alright, let's take a look at it from the other side."

" Right."

" Now Kevin, this must be a pretty heavy affair"

" Yeah. It's 3000, 3600 pounds empty and when it's full of water, it weighs up to 20,000 pounds, I believe."

" So there will be an automatic feed of water obviously, but what about feeding it with the combustible, with the lumber?"

" That will have to be manually done by the co-housing community members."

" And you can feed logs in there up to about 3 or 4 feet, right?"

" Almost 3 feet."

" Now, will all of this combustible lumber, timber, be harvested on the property?"

" They will be, yeah. That's their plan."

" So the plan is to do sustainable harvests of the wood lot."

" Exactly."

" How do you get all these BP use of hot water from this boiler to all the individual residences?"

" Well, they'll be tied up. They'll be connected to this Ecoflex insulated underground pipe that runs throughout the project."

" Basically, it's a feed and a return."

" Feed and a return."

" Yes."

" Circulating hot water so each unit, each pod will have a---- There are 3 pods here, and each pod will have a backup gas boiler in it for when the temperature drops."

" Terrific."

Installing an Oil-Fired Boiler For the New Home Addition
Installing an Oil-Fired Boiler For the New Home Addition

Bob meets Jack O'Leary, the plumbing and heating contractor for this remodeling project. They discuss the old heating unit, which was an oil-fired steam system that used radiators throughout the house. The house has doubled in size since adding a new addition, and the old unit can't handle the new load. It was too costly to add another steam unit, so they decided to go with an oil-fired boiler. This works well for the homeowner, since oil is cheaper than electric, and gas isn't available in the area.

Efficient Burnham Boiler for Heat and Hot Water
Efficient Burnham Boiler for Heat and Hot Water

Bob visits with Mark Lundquist of Burnham Hydronics to check out the boiler for the hot-water heating system being installed in the Mashpee, Massachusetts, affordable homes. This Burnham Spirit model is a medium efficiency, easy-to-maintain, sealed-combustion unit. Since it is sealed combustion, it pulls the air it needs directly from the outdoors and vents to the exterior without the use of a chimney or flue. This enables a homeowner to close off the space surrounding the boiler without worrying about available combustion air for the furnace. This model uses standard parts, so any repairs will be fast and easy. The boiler is made of cast iron and has a 25 to 40 year life expectancy. It operates at 84 percent efficiency, so the homeowner will use energy dollars wisely. Charlie Delvecchio of Cape Plumbing breaks out the cost of the boiler to about $1,500 and the baseboard tubing for another $6,000, for a total cost of $7,500 for installation of the home heating system. The domestic hot-water tank is linked to the heating system as hot water from the boiler passes through a coil in the insulated hot-water tank, warming the household water through energy exchange. If the water is maintained at the proper temperature just from this passive exchange, the boiler will never be called upon to heat water for faucets and showers.
