" Let's get started with David Raphael today, who's been the landscape architect, and David what's your thinking when you approach a project like this?"
" We're trying to relate to the context of the existing environment----"
" Uhm."
" and how does less impact on that existing environment."
" Now, a minimal impact, very few scars into the landscape. Let's take a quick look at your plan here. This is obviously the driveway, and we're standing right down around here, and you see the retaining walls that were so beautifully built. There's not too much landscape work right?"
" Correct."
" Just around these 2 sides of the house and then what's the wash in and the dark green? What's the point with that?"
" There is some minimal lawn area as well as native ground covers----"
" Uhm."
" that were planning to bring back from the woodland into the landscape."
" And as I understand that they haven't installed that because it's fall and you put all that ferns and stuff in the spring?"
" Correct."
" Now, what are some of the things that you put up in here?"
" We have some native and ornamental perennials in here with the concept of trying to provide some seasonal color beginning in the spring with the Siberian iris, late summer with things like the Rubiaceae, and the foxglove. You can see one of theme is blooming in the back there."
" Uhm. Well, let's go up to the next level to see what's happening there."
" Okay."
" But the strongest feature of the landscape design are these 2 Corinthian granite walls that retain the hillside. Now, what's the thinking here?"
" Well, the thinking is to help retain the soil as well as step the hillside down----"
" Uhm."
" to accommodate the house and the landscaping you see."
" And some of the plant material that's used here looks like it came straight out of the woods?"
" That's correct. We we're hoping to bring back some of the woods that we had to clear by bringing in the native birch, there's a maple over there, so the woodland actually comes back onto the site."
