Vermont-Style Interior Decorating

Bob tours the first floor of the farmhouse with interior designer Regina Lawrence who points out many of the "Vermont" touches that have been included in the home. The front hall floor is Vermont slate. There is a maple staircase and maple floors throughout the rest of the first floor. The living room palette is a blend of beige, green and persimmon. The wrought-iron lamp is from Hubbarton Forge in Castleton, Vermont. All of the furniture in the living and dining rooms are from Clearlake Furniture featuring a exquisite marquetry alternately insetting maple in cherry and vice versa. Decorative glassware is from Simon Pearce, headquartered right in Quechee.

" You have gotten the assignment of really using a lot of Vermont craftsmanship in doing the interiors to this house right?"

" Exactly. We were trying to coordinate a lot of Vermont furniture manufacturers."

" Uhm! Now, the architect specified Vermont slate for the floors here in the front hall----"

" Yes, he did."

" and a maple staircase so that just Vermont all over again right?"

" And maple floors throughout the other areas will be [unk]."

" Uhm! Let's talk about some of the detailing here in the front hall."

" Fine. This happens to be a piece by a Vermont, actually at Quechee manufacturers, Sandra Pearl. I think you have seen her showroom?"

" Yes, then it actually makes all her dovetails by hand. Let's go in the living room and take a close look in here."

" Very good."

" Well, this is subtle. I like the choice of colors it's a, I guess a pomegranate or no, what do you calls persimmon."

" Persimmon."

" Yeah. And then the greens in the base and, I like touches like this though. This is a beautiful standing wrought iron lamp. Now what about your choices of furniture in here? This is, again, cherry wood I guess on the coffee table right?"

" It is. All the furniture in the living room and the dining area are from ClearLake Furniture."

" Uhm!"

" And they've done a lovely job on the marquetry. What they chose to do is mixed the main wood, in this case, cherry with a maple inset to go with our maple floors."

" And is the glass from the famous Simon Pearce?"

" Simon Pearce right in Quechee."

" Beautiful stuff. Let's take a look in the dining area. Now, the kitchen and dining room are open onto the living room but up 2 steps which is a nice transition."

" Yes. And you can see they have done the same type of furniture inlay here. Again, we have the cherry with maple on this piece."

" So this is a maple insert and it reflects what you're looking at down on the floor."

" Right."

" Nice."

" And beautiful construction by ClearLake. They do a lot of handcrafting. And on the table, they've done the reverse. We have a maple table with a cherry insert."

" This is a nice palette in here basically, a kind of a blandwood with a sea-green."

" Yes. [unk] who did all the furniture in this room decided to use the nice light maple."

" Uhm!"

" And we carried the soft green in to echo the slate color in the entryway."

" So, the Shaw carpet does that very, very nicely."

" Right. We have a very subtle transition from----"

" Yes."

" the hall."

Installing the Dishwasher and Garbage Disposal
Installing the Dishwasher and Garbage Disposal

Plumbing and heating contractor Doug Buchanan is ready to install the Kenmore Elite dishwasher. The dishwasher has a very clean design with the electronics panel on the top of the lid where it's hidden from view under the counter. The interior of the dishwasher has been configured so that it can accommodate large 13-inch plates and the slide-out shelf for glassware can be lowered a notch to fit champagne flutes and other tall glassware. The dishwasher has a standard plug-in for 110 current and a drain line that is already pre-drilled in the cabinet. While old-style dishwashers have a drain solenoid, the new styles like this Kenmore Elite have a pump. The water feed is made of stainless steel flexible line which also goes through the cabinet into a main shutoff for the dishwasher only. With wheels on the back like a shopping cart, the dishwasher can be rolled right into place.

Meg Tarvin from Frontgate is with Teresa Fogolini and Bob as they move to the poolside lanai and the furnishings that bring indoor living outside. The Estate Plantation chair they have chosen is sturdy, durable, and designed to live outdoors. It sits on a rug that is polypropolene, woven in Belgium, waterproof, and UV protected. Even the clock-thermometer is like indoor wall art, yet it is meant to live outdoors. The buffet has all-weather wicker baskets, stainless steel hardware, and finishes meant to withstand the weather. Even the glassware is elegant, but unbreakable perfect for outdoor living. Fogolini explains that she and Jim Minardi live outdoors most of the time, so the cast aluminum chairs and table designed for outdoors are perfect for them. The stainless-steel cooler bowl with cast aluminum base is loaded with drinks for a party. Minardi is already at the grill with steaks for the upcoming housewarming.

The Mashers' Victorian remodel includes an expansive outdoor deck to bring indoor living outside. Bob looks at the western red cedar deck that creates the transition from indoors to the gardens and yard planned by Ruth Foster. Meg Tarvin from FrontGate joins Bob to look at the furnishings that recreate this space as an extension of indoor living. Starting on the deck, Tarvin shows Bob the teak table with a stone center that turns and functions as a lazy susan. The teak chairs and umbrella are upholstered in a Sunbrella fabric to live up to year-round northern weather. Below the deck, an outdoor room is furnished with a wicker-look synthetic couch and chairs with Sunbrella-covered cushions. The seating and the elegant rug are synthetic and intended to live outdoors in all kinds of weather. To keep outdoor living comfortable, FrontGate has provided a Mosquito Magnet to attract and trap biting insects and a firepit for warmth and ambience.
