Building a Fireplace Mantle

" Okay, it's not gonna be easy to make a formal-looking colonial mantelpiece right over an old brick chimney like this. This is actually [unk] out because of the brick works is way out into the roof and it would be a lot easier if we we're just dealing with a flushed wall, right?"
" Absolutely."
" Yes, but we've already taken the old mantel shelf that was here and what's the first step?"
" The first thing we want to do is to establish a starting point, a nice straight starting point for ourselves, so we better---- you'll need a nail right on the side."
" And we're just gonna---- we're gonna try to get right into some of the old spot."
" Now, this second board is gonna give us a box effect in a nice straight line, so we can build the face of our mantle outline."
" And now we're ready for the face of the mantel."
" Which has been pre-cut to go over the raised part."
" That's right."
" And right into there, of course, we'll also need a filler piece back here."
" The thing to remember with this is that you always wanna keep the wood no closer than 8 inches to the firebox, that's the code here."
" That's the local code. Exactly."
" Right."
" Okay, now you're ready for the top front piece."
" Okay, thanks Riley."
" And that will be totally covered up, won't it?"
" That's right"
" You get over there, Clark."
" And now the face."
" Top face off."
" And of course, they've all been pre-cut to fit. How you doing over there?"
" [unk]"
" Alright."
" Alright, are we gonna plaster it?"
" Yes, that's next."
" And this is like a flattened column. This is what you would really call it and I've got a mark for it there."
" Okay. Now, I'm ready for this next top piece."
" Okay."
" And then [unk]"
" Before you put that I think I'll put a penny here, right?"
" Well, a little good luck for a summer?"
" Yeah. Now this piece is the actual mantel shelf."
" Alright. Right there and what this is it's a couple of 1 X 10 that I would've glue and now together with some 4-penny nails. Now once this is done, you'll take an ancient creative crown molding and apply up to the edge of the mantle and this creates the mantle top."
" Okay and now we're ready for the crown molding. "
" You go right over the pillar on the back here and it's the same molding we should put up on the ceiling."
" Right here."
" That looks good. Beautiful."
" Okay, and the next thing we put on is the---- just a simple molding that we have here."
" very personal effort. Where do you put it on?"
" Well, this is where the other side can come into to play. That came only about a foot off in the floor."
" It's looks really nice."
" Okay."
" A little blue and some 4-penny nails."
" A little bit of molding goes a long way to give it a real feel of authentic antique."
