" This house was built in the early 20s----"

" Uh huh."

" and we have a lot of problems with this one. You think you got problems, this have a lot of problems."

" Is that right?"

" Come on in here and I'll show some of what we're doing."

" Hey Al, this is a big front porch."

" Nice aren't they?"

" Very nice. Very nice."

" It's beautiful. Now, what did you have to do here? What it is in bad shape?"

" Well, we have a lot of floor damage from the rain that come in here, and some other structure of the floor, so when we place part of that floor over there----"

" Uh huh."

" and the floor still slopes, it pitches down."

" [unk] just like that if you have rains, hurricanes, water comes in, flows back out."

" It drains right back out."

" Drains right back out."

" What about this ceiling, what is it?"

" It's pecky cypress."

" Ah, okay. What makes it pecky?"

" Well, it's the heart of your cypress tree and it has worms in it."

" Okay."

" And the worm causes all the holes from there."

" Sure, okay. And when they slice it up in the board----"

" You're right."

" you end up with this effect, but I really like it. Is it an expensive [unk]."

" It's really expensive because it's hard to find."

" Yeah."

" Now----"

" But it's a beautiful porch."

" Thank you. Now, here's the living room."

" Very, very nice."

" Right."

" I didn't know you're a decorator also."

" I'm not a decorator. The decorator did that."

" That's real nice, yeah."

" Oh."

" Now, is this typical of the construction of the house?"

" Yeah. It's all single constructed. These are one the cupboards and it's neutral before and then we've got a 4 x 4, 4 x 4, and right on down the line, they nail it 1 by down here and this is a 12-inch board that goes from floor to ceiling. We put these ends for to give its strength."

" Sure, it's a balloon frame."

" Right, the balloon-type frame."

" And that would have been like the outside wall."

" Exactly, there's no insulation."

" Great. Well, it must be getting kind of, well, of course, you've got a porch on the other side----"

" Right, that's why----"

" here."

" they have porches wrapped around the [unk]."

" Okay, okay. What about the floor, is this original?"

" Yeah, this is the original floor and it is a Florida pine, and it's very durable to worms, anything like that."

" Yeah. So, it's the same as what we've got over there."

" Exactly like what you've got that's why you wanna save those floors over there."

" Yeah. What did you do for a finish here Al?"

" We just [unk] down and take a look."

" Yup."

" So, you choose the white----"

" I choose the white thing and putting your paint on top of it."

" Magnificent."

" Now, this is the master bedroom, which is off the living room here, and when you come in here, you kind of wanna watch your step because you're gonna run into the same type of thing here. The original porch was here, they closed it up. We have the [unk] panel window."

" I could feel it."

" Yeah, don't fall."

" You can feel it here----"

" Right."

" You're really going down."

" You can see how much it's falling there, but it's the same thing----"

" Oh my, look at that, yeah."

" Water comes in, flows right back out of it."

" You've got about a 2-inch raft at 3 feet"

" A good 3 feet rafter."

" Yeah."

" Uh huh, same type structure."

" Same kind of structure----"

" You're right."

" that board and back and walls----"

" Uh huh, uh huh."

" and the same kind of feeling."

" Right, and it's got the same type windows----"

" Yes."

" throughout the house here."

" Crank out cases. Crank out cases."

" Was this here or is this brand new [unk]?"

" This right here was a walking closet, which they wanted at the bathroom off of this, so we're gonna have to level the floor [unk] naturally."

" Sure."

" and we've started from there."

" I like these materials."

" It's an sculptured marble, it's not as expensive as your real marble."

" Compared with the other price."

" Right, yeah."

" And you use it in the shower as well."

" The shower has got the same thing. There is [unk]."

" Okay."

" And now, I'll show you a fireplace that similar to what you have. Bob, you see we get this fireplace, just like yours."

" Yeah, we have a very similar----"

" Right."

" brick fireplace. "

" and all we did here was just marbleized it with the paint and looks great, and you probably just the same, and these are unique in Florida, to have a nice fireplace like this You get chilly night, you're alone in the fire, it's a real [unk]."

" Yeah, that's a real asset"

" Come on in here let me show you my kitchen, I'm really proud of this."

" Well, this is beautiful Al. So, did you have to do a lot of work in here?"

" Yeah, we got a lot to work in here. We've gathered the whole place out."

" Really?"

" Yeah, it was a nightmare, just a disaster."

" So, they're all brand new cabinets."

" Everything is brand new in here, except the floor."

" Is it wooden counter?"

" This is a laminate counter----"

" That's right."

" would match our wood here."

" Very nice job, yeah. I like the way you kind of a----"

" Get [unk] edge."

" [unk] the edge of the laminate."

" Uh huh, it's not a sharp corner that way."

" Very, very nice."

" Uh huh."

" Now, was the kitchen always this size or was there a wall removed or what?"

" Well, there was a wall in here, but it was removed before we ever got here."

" Yeah, I'm looking at the clue right here."

" And here's--- you're seeing where it was."

" yeah, that was going this way in----"

" Right."

" opposite direction."

How to Fix a Clogged Drain
How to Fix a Clogged Drain

Here's another great tip from BobVila.com. Don t let a drain clog slow you down; it s usually an easy fix. A partial clog can be cleared by cleaning out the drainpipe. Older plumbing can be damaged by using harsh drain chemicals, so opt for a naturally biodegrading drain cleaner or use this homemade solution: pour a half cup of baking soda down the drain, then slowly add a cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain for five minutes, then flush with a gallon of boiling water. Some clogs call for a plunger. The key here is to create a vacuum. If you re working on the kitchen sink, you need to clamp off the dishwasher hose and seal the drain openings in the other sink basins. If it s the bathroom sink or tub, plug the overflow opening with a wet rag. With at least a couple inches of water in the basin, plunge rapidly several times, pulling up sharply at the end to move the clog. You may need to do this several times. If plunging doesn t clear the clog, use an auger. If your drain opening is obstructed, sometimes a coat hanger wire with a small hooked end will bring up the clog. You can also detach the trap under the sink with a plumber s wrench in order to get at the clog or to rescue anything you ve lost down the drain. If you don t see an improvement in drainage after all of that and especially if more than one drain is slow in your house you should consult a plumber since the problem could be caused by blocked or improper venting of the wastewater system. Spraying on and Painting a Heat-reflective Pool Deck Surface
Spraying on and Painting a Heat-reflective Pool Deck Surface

Don Humphrey is spraying a cement and polymer mix from Innovative Concrete Technology called Texture-Krete 2000 onto the pool edge and deck in Punta Gorda, Florida. He moves in a circular motion to splat the cement mix onto the deck. As the gloss begins to leave the spots, a crewmember follows behind to knock it down with a trowel. This removes the pointy tops but leaves a 1/16-inch stucco pattern to the pool deck to make it easy to walk on. The deck is cleaned and scratched to remove any rough points before Humphrey and his crew apply an acrylic paint to the textured deck surface. The key to a well-sealed surface is to roll the paint firmly into all the nooks and dips in the surface. Bob talks about the embedded deck drain set in the concrete that is pitched slightly away from the pool. Excess water and dirty deck water drains away from the pool and is carried off to the sides of the pool deck by the deck drain. Humphrey applies two coats of paint and a topcoat for protection. The deck can be maintained with gentle soap-and-water washing to prevent any white spots from drying chlorine on the painted surface. Humphrey says the paint should last three to five years before it is redone. One key to maintaining the surface is to avoid abrasive cleaners or power washing. Should any mold or mildew attack the surface, Humphrey suggests using a mild bleach-and-water solution to kill the mold. The oyster color the homeowners have selected should wear well and stay cool in the hot Florida sun. Editors Note: The deck surface product with cooling properties used in this application was not Kool Deck from Mortex.
