Installing Cultured Marble Shower Walls

" What is cultured marble anyway?"
" Culture marble is a fiber glass product. It's made from crushed marble dust and it's mixed with resin. And we use a fiber glass dye to create the color swirls."
" Okay. But there's genuine marble dust, it's in the process."
" It's actual marble dust that's crushed and manufactured. And they sorta recycle old marble."
" But it's a lot cheaper than marble."
" Oh, it's almost half the price."
" And it's pretty durable."
" Very durable and it's also very very strong."
" Yeah. Now how do you install it? You've obviously already put in the back sheet which is a very large piece of goods, 5 by 7 or 8 feet?"
" 7 feet high."
" How big do the sheets come?"
" We can go 10 feet by 8 feet."
" Fabulous, really!"
" And we can also make round things."
" Uh huh. Well here you're doing just simple square for the right things."
" Square and simple."
" Yeah, okay. What do you put in the corner?"
" That's a silicone adhesive and now we're ready to put on the"
" Panelling adhesive."
" Adhesive."
" And all that you need to attach the slab to the wall is panel adhesive?"
" That would do it."
" Okay."
" We'll put a spot over an adhesive."
" Alright. Now we're ready to lift this even split."
" If you could help me we could put this in."
" Right. You've got suction cups that will help you, right?"
" That's takes most of the load off today."
" Yeah it does."
" It just a little helps to rotate it."
" Alright, thank you."
" You can't slam the jack. So how put or apply pressure to it until the adhesive sets?"
" What I'm gonna do is cut some braces for it."
" Alright. Now on the other side you've gotta figure out how to cut out the plumbing holes, right? How do you do that?"
" What I'll do is I'll start out with a level line and a plumb line. This is my plumb line, the level angling across. Then what I'll do is I'll take a number from across this way."
" Center hole to the edge of the plumb line."
" To the center, and then from the center to the bottom."
" To the bottom of the line."
" And I'll do that for each hole."
" Right, yeah. So you've already transferred that on to a?"
" Everything's ready, we're ready to cut."
" How easy is it to cut?"
" Well it's kinda tricky but I'll show ya."
" Okay. The glare is so bad that we're using sunglasses instead of basic goggles today. And Jack's just transferring the last measurements there before we start doing the trimming. Are you gonna drill the holes first or trim the excess?"
" What I'll do is cut along the perimeter first to get a shape and then I'll drill all the holes."
" Okay."
" Just wear your mask."
" Yeah."
" This is going to get very dusty."
" Okay. Now he's using a regular sauder cut?"
" What I did, put a rotary saw with a masonary blade."
" Okay."
" But the thing is I have to cut backwards. It's a little bit dangerous and a little bit tricky."
" You have to cut backwards do you? And then you're gonna go bracket those."
" Exactly! So what happens is the clear [unk] of [expletive] if you go in the wrong direction."
" Okay. It's gotta be bad for your saw though."
" I probably just do 2 saws a year."
" Yeah. How about drilling the holes?"
" Drilling the holes is rather easy. What I have is a tungsten carbide drill bit which will just drill through practically anything."
" Sure."
" Will you give me electricity?"
" Okay."
" Nice clean cut. That's the kind of tool you can rent, huh? Nice clean cut. So you only have to sand the 2 edges that you cut 'cause this outer."
" The other 2 edges are finished"
" Yeah, they're soft at the edges."
" Got it. And I'll brush it off and we'll put the suction cup on it."
" And we're ready."
" Okay. Let's take it in. Okay, is this up? Okay. Cocking is in place. Panel adhesive is in place."
" Wonderful! Great! And now to brace it. Precut length of wood."
" And we're ready."
" And that's all there is to it."
