Bob Completes His Search For a Home on Martha's Vineyard

Bob ends his tour on laid back East Chop with a 300 square foot home on a large piece of wooded land. The home was moved from the Methodist Campground about 15 years prior to the tour and was improved with a porch. Alan points out the feature of the home from the antique trim and fireplace to a pocket window in the kitchen. Bob decides this home will be remodeled due to the value of the location in picturesque East Chop.

" Victorian architecture dominates East Chop, with a wide variety of real estate ranging from large summer homes to modest cottages. Maybe we'll be able to find something here."

" Well, I really like East Chop. It's got a nice laid-back feeling and I love the pine woods everywhere."

" Yeah, a nice, cool location."

" Is this it?"

" This is the house."

" This is it?"

" Yeah, yeah."

" It's awfully small house."

" Well, you know the house is only 300 square feet but what you're buying here, the land is 19,000 square feet, almost a half acre."

" Now, what's the asking price here?"

" 138, reduced from 160. Excellent value."

" Excellent venue."

" Look at this house. Even though, it's small, it's got these Gothic shutters and, you know, colonial windows, real wood screens."

" Yeah."

" You can do great things here."

" Oh, the shingles look to be in good shape."

" The land alone is worth $100,000."

" About half an acre lot in East Chop, you figure, huh?"

" Yep."

" But it's just one room. Oh, well, no, it's 2 rooms."

" It's a few rooms."

" It's a few rooms?"

" Some of them aren't easy to get to but it's functional."

" Now, does it have a little history?"

" Yeah, about 50 years ago, it was moved from the campground up to this location."

" Uh huh."

" Other than that, I don't know too much about it. It's been used as a summer cottage by the family."

" Well, the porch posts look antique."

" Yes, they are."

" Yeah."

" They're from another property. Some place, I think in Pennsylvania."

" But this looks like it was added on to. It just has a kind of a lean-to feel."

" Yeah, this may be a newer section whereas the front section I think was the original one that was moved here."

" Well, can we take a look inside."

" Yeah, let's go right in."

" Solid."

" Yeah."

" Yeah, it's a nice porch. The porch has been re-done over the years."

" Price has been reduced, huh?"

" In good shape. Yeah. Let me see if we go in this door."

" Oh, this is cute."

" Yeah, isn't it nice? This is the living room. Look how it's detailed and really clean and neat. Nice double-hung windows, great detail."

" Yeah."

" Look outside, it's wood."

" Yeah, I know. Very private."

" Different setting."

" Very private location."

" You can get some raised paneling over this fireplace. Great fireplace. "

" Looks like an old door."

" Yeah."

" An interesting one."

" Looks like a steel fireplace. "

" Yeah, it looks like an insert."

" A little rusty."

" Sure, works probably quite well, too."

" Yeah."

" The damper."

" Yeah."

" So they moved this house here with the fireplace. That's neat."

" Yeah, they probably built the whole fireplace after they moved the house."

" Uh huh. Not much ceiling height. This is just probably not insulated either."

" No, no, you know, it's a 3-season house. Most people just use it for summer but it's still cozy and it's such a great thing."

" $130,000."

" Excellent value, down from 160. They actually have a full bath over here with a tub."

" Yeah."

" Uh huh."

" Well, that's tiles on the floor."

" Uh huh."

" You have a linen closet."

" Yeah."

" Uh huh."

" And this is the kitchen."

" And here you have this wonderful kitchen, nice walk-in kitchen, fully appliance, double sink."

" Look at this. Windows."

" Pocket."

" Pocket windows."

" Just like a sailboat."

" That's terrific."

" Yeah."

" Nice and bright in there, huh?"

" Really get a lot of use out of that."

" And then this is the bedroom in here."

" This could either be the bedroom or the dining room, depending upon how you're gonna use it."

" Where would you--"

" I'd say this could be the master bedroom because there is another bedroom upstairs."

" There is?"

" Yeah. You know, if you wanna stay on 1 floor, this could be--"

" Oh, this is very cute. It's roughly, what? Eight or nine feet by maybe ten?"

" Yeah, that's about it. Twelve, maybe twelve by ten."

" Nice wooden floors, cherry wallpaper, three windows so you get a nice cross breeze through here."

" Yeah."

" You say there's a second floor. Yeah, I noticed that there were dormers above here but there can't be too much up here."

" This is pretty tight."

" Yeah, it's a narrow stairway. It's kind of like a ship's stairway."

" Yeah, that's great."

" For little people."

" A little closet here. This is kind of like a doll house."

" Yeah, isn't it cute?"

" It's very unique, yeah, but, watch your head."

" Okay, I mean, we're talking 6-foot ceiling."

" Low ceiling but at least it's expansive and I'm guessing room."

" Once again, you have the painted pine floor."

" Uh huh."

" There's plenty of windows. You get a lot of good light in here."

" Just 3 windows, nice cross ventilation."

" There's another low closet over there."

" It's not much house. I mean, it's really a tiny play cottage almost but what you're really talking here is the land."

" The land is excellent."

" And the location."

" Yes. Land and location, it's just a super value."

Direct Vent Fireplaces for Heat and Ambience
Direct Vent Fireplaces for Heat and Ambience

Bob visits a Heat n' Glo showroom where Ross Morrison shows him a variety of direct-vent gas fireplaces. With a sealed glass chamber there is no interplay of of room airno products of combustion will get into the room and it doesn't use any of the the room's already warm air for combustion. The fireplace inserts come with ceramic fiber logs. When the flames hit the logs they produce a nice glow. The logs are light, unbreakable, and last a lifetime. Ross shows Bob the 6000 TRXI, a premium model that is rated as a furnace. It has a beautiful masonry appearance inside and a pumps out enough BTUs to heat a 1200 - 1500 sq. ft. house. The fireplace also offers the option of turning the flames down or off or opening the climate control damper to cut the heat by one half.

Putting in a New Fireplace
Putting in a New Fireplace

The walls in the new addition to the home are just about ready for paint. The new fireplace will make this new in-law suite very cozy. Malcolm Gurney of The Fireplace Connection reviews features of the fireplace. It is a Majestic wood-burning fireplace that uses outside air for combustion. It operates like a standard wood stove with the doors closed while the fire is burning. Measurements for the fireplace were taken prior to installation, allowing for a six foot mantle. The pipe needs to be installed in-line with the peak of the roof. Thirty-degree offsets, the steepest degree available, will be used to install the pipe. A multiple number of offsets can be used in the installation. The fireplaces come with installation manuals to explain the process.

Count Rumford Fireplace
Count Rumford Fireplace

Fireplaces are a nice feature in any home. Count Rumford fireplaces, known for their heat efficiency, are tall and shallow, reflecting heat back into the room. Constructed from firebricks and refractory mortar, they will tolerate very high temperatures. The distinctive throat connecting the firebox to the flue wastes less heated room air.

Building a Rumford Fireplace
Building a Rumford Fireplace

The Rumford fireplace is being built and Bob reviews the herringbone construction process being used. The Rumford fireplace uses a design which is approximately 200 years old. The fireplace is tall and shallow to reflect a lot of heat and has a streamlined throat between the firebox and the flue. Heat Stop Refractory Mortar is used to withstand the high temperatures generated in the firebox. This mortar conforms to building codes. Bob then reviews the construction elements of the fireplace.
