" I guess we'll start our tour today in the old part of the house, the old Victorian cabin as we call it, and this was the living room which we're now using as a den."
" It's a very comfortable room for sitting down with a book and enjoying a nice, fire."
" Let me try out this chair. This is wonderful."
" Yeah."
" Now what was your thinking for furnishing the whole house?"
" Well, we took the concept from a Victorian cottage house, which was usually furnished with cast-off."
" From the main house house. So we visited auctions and antique shops, flee markets, and we even visited your attic. "
" Yeah, I know about that. This chair is terrific. Where did you find it?"
" The chair came from a consignment shop and then we bought it for 8 dollars."
" An upholstered chair for 8 dollars."
" And then we put a nice slip cover on it to give it a fresh look."
" Marvelous. Now what was your approach here in terms of the palette, the colors that you've used?"
" All the colors from this intricate wallpaper. It's got nice soft colors and we took the yellow for the woodwork."
" From the wallpaper. "
" Yes."
" And we used it in the little curtains."
" And then we've also used it on the chairs and the accent. We picked up the green and we've used the nice Victorian fringe on here. It's a nice little Victorian accent."
" It is a nice accent."
" Yeah."
" Now what about this rug?"
" It's a sisal carpet."
" We chose it for 2 reasons. One is for the color, and the second is reason is it's a inexpensive floor covering, and it's easy to maintain when you have a lot of sand and dirt. You just pick it up and then it take it outside and shake it out."
" And shake it out. Yeah. And they're not very expensive you're saying, right?"
" They are very reasonable. Around a hundred dollars for a 9 by 12."
" That's not bad at all."
" Not bad."
" Well, the den looks wonderful. Let's take a look at the rest of the little cabin here. The bathroom itself was not changed much. You still see the same bathroom fixtures--the tub and the toilet and the sink; however, the floor was rotted here, so we had to take up the floor and remove all these fixtures, and while we were at it, we put in a new ceramic tiles around, which really makes a difference in here. You know, I love the light yellow that you've kind of taken from the wallpaper and used throughout here, including our little kitchenette, which again, new wallpaper, new paint, same cupboard that was here, same refrigerator with a paint job on it, even the same kitchen sink with a new bottom cabinet made for it. This will end up being a guest kitchen when we have guests using the little cottage, and then, we had 1 bedroom and a turret bedroom."
" We have a guest bedroom."
" We've used the yellow throughout the cottage. I think when you have a small space, it's good to have a continuity."
" And if you stick with 1 color, the room will be easier."
" More pleasing to the eye."
" More pleasing and easier to live in."
" One thing you can remember is that you don't need to match everything exactly. We've started with the stripe and the yellow wallpaper, but we've added brass, old brass headboard."
" And some Victorian tables and chest."
" And they don't all match, but they all are of the same color tone."
" Perfect."
" And they make for a comfortable, quiet."
" There's not too."
" room."
" There's not too much contrast."
" Not a lot of contrast."
" Okay. I recognize that."
" This came from your attic. "
" Yeah."
" And it adds a nice accent colors to the room."
" Yeah. It looks terrific in here. Let's take a look at the turret room."
" Right."
" This has to be the narrowest little staircase here. Oh, boy. Look at this. This is great. I love the colors in here."
" Turned out to be a wonderful children's hideaway."
" You know, when we started, the ceiling head in here was so low that it really was like a little child's attic. This was the ridge, but the shed dormer roof line came down straight like this to another smaller window. You couldn't walk close to the wall without banging your head there."
" It's neat."
" Yeah. But."
" Oh, yeah."
" Watch your head."
" This is it, huh?"
" [unk]. We're talking now."
" This is sure a low ceiling, but at least it's expansive enough. You have some room. So there's the architectural solution of turning it into a turret, which is a Victorian. Hello."
" Hello."
" I think really works well here. We have an additional 9 feet now so that the ceiling height is closer to 14. What a great space."
" Yes, it is and we painted it sky blue. It feels like you're in the clouds."
" Yeah."
" And we've got kites flying."
" Yeah."
" Up here."
" The kites are an inexpensive way to decorate and to bring color in."
" They're a very good way to decorate and you could take them off the wall, go out, and fly them."
" Sure. Now the big concern was that you wouldn't be able to bring any furniture up here, so."
" The stairway is very narrow, so we were luck we found some canvas children's sized cot."
" They fold right up. Easy to bring upstairs and we've treat it to run like a camp. We've used sleeping bags."
" Sure."
" And battery-powered lanterns."
" Yeah. And these marvelous wooden treasure chests kind of."
" Wooden treasure chest to hold games, toys."
" I like that. Yeah. And then, these are antique chests. Even the rugs?"
" The rugs are antique. They're easily washable. The kids can sit down here on a rainy day, have a great game of monopoly."
" Exactly. So we really have a standalone guest suite now. Mom and Dad can be in the bedroom below, kids up here. They have their own little living room, kitchenette, and bath."
