" We didn't talk about the window treatment Anne. What do you call this stuff?"
" Well, we've used a swag window treatment, which was typical during the Victorian era. And it's very easy to do with this hardware."
" This is mounted on the wall."
" It gets mounted on the frame of the window----"
" Yes."
" and you pull the fabric----"
" And then you pull the fabric through."
" through the ring and puff it."
" You make a puff and----"
" Uh huh."
" just kind of artfully arrange it."
" Yes."
" And it's of cotton [unk], right?"
" It's a cotton material, and you can get this at almost any hardware store."
" Great. Now, let's take a look at our Victorian bathroom. We did kind of check it out before you accessorized it, which you've done beautifully. It's nice to have some color than all white bath. You know, what I hadn't really talked about or noticed is that the ceramic tile on the floor is that wonderful old time Victorian tile, but what about these black dots?"
" Well, we wanted a random pattern----"
" Yeah."
" which is very hard to do so I suggested to the tile man that he throw some pennies up in the air, and wherever they drop, to put a black dot."
" What a way."
" And that's what he did."
" That's a great way to do it."
" Yeah."
" It's a wonderful story. I also like these. They look like they're an antique."
" They're antique with a milk glass."
" Uh huh."
" Lantern on them."
" Beautiful job. Okay. Now, can we go take a look at the great room?"
" Sure."
" Well, the great room added 20 x 32 feet, which is not huge; everything from the wood burning stove to the kitchen, and you've done a great job in here."
" Thank you."
" But let's tour the connecting structure. This long hallway, which is about 30 feet x 6, and Ryley, you're still busy, huh?"
" Still at it Bob. This would be the last time in the room. My third time is [unk]."
" Listen, congratulations."
" Okay."
" 16 weeks for all this work is really a record breaker."
" Thanks a lot."
" And it looks beautiful."
" Okay. Okay."
" Alright, well see you later."
" So Anne, the only vestige of the old cabin really that we've left untouched is the old sheathing----"
" Yes."
" and it was secondhand to boot, you know. You can see to where it was painted once before."
" Oh, it's nice. It still has a beautiful blue color to it."
" Uh huh."
" Over here, we have a nautical chart of Martha's Vineyard. I think it's kind of nice for guests to be able to see where they are----"
" Yes."
" and locate themselves. We're right here."
" Yes, and there's---- This is East Chop and that's West Chop."
" Uh huh."
" And it's up-to-date."
" It's up-to-date and it shows the roads----"
" Yeah."
" and the beaches."
" And you get them for 15 or 20 bucks."
" Yes."
" Yeah."
" Uh huh."
" I like this bench."
" It's a nice old bench."
" Great idea. Just the place to put on----"
" It's a good----"
" your boots for the weather."
" Yup, put on your boots."
" In the back hall here. And the more hooks that you put on here, the more versatile the wall becomes, and kind of a more interesting it becomes."
" The cross numbers are nice. We can, you know, put our rocks [unk] kind of base on those [unk]----"
" Yes."
" and do a little display."
" Not all the blocking for sure. And then we've got a telephone nook that was carved out of the kitchen space behind this corner. Behind this wall is where we have a pair pantries, but I really love this idea of keeping the studs exposed like this, and now of course, you come along and you're hanging fishing tackle, and----"
" [unk] big sign from----"
" Yeah, a game of fish [unk]."
" Fish market."
" A fish market. That's great."
" Now let's take a look----"
" Alright."
" at the pantry. "
" Let's take a look at the great room. This is wonderful space. I love all the pine, the beadboard, the pine cabinets, and just that whole feeling of unfinished pine."
" This is a pantry for dish and glass storage----"
" Uh huh."
" and we left the pine natural----"
" Uh huh."
" and we've used a clear shelf paper."
" So that it looks like it's all just unpainted pine The space is only 3 foot square and the shelves are only about 10 or 12 inches deep----"
" Right."
" but it really----"
" get a lot of storage."
" Yeah, it takes the place of a lot of overhead cabinets, and it doesn't cost as much. Kitchen ceiling looks spectacular with this matte quite finish, you know. When we first put it up there with shiny gray----"
" It looks kind of bright."
" it's kind of bright, but the white paint just makes all the difference in the world. And the light fixtures are not antique, are they?"
" No, they're new, but the green glass is typical----"
" Uh huh."
" of antique fixture. Green was a particularly favorite antique color."
" Now, we put the shelf up with the light under it and everything, and this is what we had in mind, kind of a potting shelf inside the house for herbs."
" Herbs we can use for cooking----"
" Yeah."
" and that is concealing our lighting, our task lighting for the counter."
" Uh huh. And, I insisted on a real deep stainless steel sink because if anybody likes to fish, this is an ideal place to go clean up the fish after you caught them."
" You can also fit your lobster pot in there to clean it----"
" You're right."
" or a stock pot."
" Right. Exactly. And then the kitchen is the dining room. It's an eat-in kitchen, but by putting in Victorian furniture like this, it really gives it a special effect."
" It gives it a warm feeling."
" Uh huh."
" Over here, we have some antique postcards that we've collected. They're all of Martha's Vineyard, and a tip for people at home would be to take your postcards to your framer and have them just cut the mat, and then, you can do the framing yourself. This type of frame is available in any time 5 and 10."
" And they're quite inexpensive, yes."
" And yes, [unk] inexpensive."
" I love the table with----"
" It's a little Victorian lamp table and, we have used it for our oil lamp. In case we ever lose power here, we'll have some light."
" And them items like a starfish, which, you know, are free if you find them."
" And they make great decoration."
" They're very decorative, yes."
" We also have antique postcards over here. Instead of putting just 1 piece of glass on our table we've used 2 centerpieces, and we're able to sandwich the postcards between the 2 pieces, but of course, you could use family photographs, or----"
" Snapshots, menu, souvenir of a summer."
" Souvenirs of the summer."
" Yeah. Now tell me about this wicker. It's an unusual color."
" This is a Victorian."
" Uh huh."
" It was handmade out of willow, probably in the late 1800s."
" Yeah."
" And this was a natural piece that had some green stain on it, and a lot of it is worn off, but we like it kind of worn like this."
" It's beautiful. Is the---- The cushion fabric, is this also Victorian?"
" The cushion fabric is new, but it's a copy of an antique fabric."
" Uh huh."
" Well, you get such a wonderful feeling because of the height of this room, and of course, the gallery up there and the loft and everything. Let's go up and look at all of the bedroom stuff there."
" Great. All the furniture in the girl's room is antique, inexpensive. And the biggest bargain are the shutters that we've taken off the old cottage and made into headboards."
" Very clever. They just kind of applied to the wall."
" We've attached them to the wall."
" Very nice. Let's look at the boy's bedroom."
" Okay."
" So how did you pick the colors in here?"
" We picked the colors from the bench, an Adirondack bench. It's kind of an odd color green----"
" Yes."
" but that's the boy's room and we wanted it to be centered around fishing so then, that's came to fish."
" Yeah."
" And the navy blue for the nautical prints. And I think it's a colorful room."
" It all works very, very nicely. Well, those kid's bedrooms are terrific, but I really love this loft space and this whole gallery up here. You know, the spindles cut out of flat boards like this really are visually so interesting."
" Yes. Nice design."
" Yeah. And the loft space, the way you furnished it, it's absolutely simple. It's got that little nautical flare."
" It's an informal seating area. It's a great place for a game or to read a book."
" The kids on rainy days, yeah. And from here, you really understand why the only way to furnish this great room is the way you've done with the furniture kind of aimed at the wood burning stove."
" We've used the wood burning stove as our focal point, and it's worked out well. It's a beautiful stove and a great color."
