Smart House Wiring

Bob talks about the "Smart House" system that will be installed in a house. He first looks at some light fixtures. The recessed light fixtures being used allow insulation to come into direct contact with them. Pete Tim, the electrician, explains that with Smart House wiring there will be an integrated computer system that controls cable TV, communication, appliances, heating and air conditioning, and security. They look at a hybrid branch cable that is used for wiring. Pete also uses some innovative cable stackers that keep the wires in the center of the wall cavity so no one will put a screw or nail in the wire.

Smart House Wiring

" Conventional houses very often have these high hats or cans, which are an energy drain 'cause they're full of holes and you can't bring the insulation right up to them. What we have here are these double-walled aluminum fixtures that are referred to as an airlock fixture. They let you do that. You're gonna insulate right up to them and right on top of them so that you don't have excessive heat loss or gain. Let's start with Pete Tim, our electrician and what is Smart House Technology anyway?"

" Smart House Technology is a central computer system in your home that integrates your cable TV system, your communications, your security, all your appliances, and your heating air conditioning controls."

" You can turn or switch on and off through your cellular phone and."

" Right."

" Yeah. And of course, it all depends on cables. I recognize this white stuff. That's just plain old Romax, but what are some of these are cables? This yellow one for example."

" This yellow is called your hybrid branch cable and this would replace your standard Romax cable that you'd see in a conventional home. You've got 3 number 12 wires in here that carry your 120 volts power."

" And you've got low voltage control wires that interface with the computer system."

" And what about the low voltage lighting?"

" They would take an applications cable here."

" This orange one."

" Right."

" You would run one of these down to your convenience center or your receptacle."

" And you would plug in a module and that would operate your lighting system."

" What about the gray one?"

" This is your communications and cable TV system cable."

" Okay."

" And this would allow you to control your security system and be able to view security cameras from a mini TV in the home."

" Okay."

" And also your telephone system."

" I noticed you've got fasteners here that are a little bit unusual. Tell me about these things."

" These fasteners here are designed to keep the walls away from the center of the base."

" The wires away from the center of the base."

" Right. The wire."

" between studs."

" Right."

" And the clips here also will hold them back to the center of the stud, which would keep them away from drywall or nails and."

" Or a homeowner hanging a picture in the middle of the wall."

" That [unk]. Right."

" You don't have to worry about that. Now the other thing that's interesting is the way this is all running here. There are so many twists and turns and why do you do it that way?"

" 'Cause this applications or this hybrid cable is so tense and so heavy that we need to pre-bend in the wall."

" When we go to trim it out after the drywall is applied, we need to pull it out, fasten our connections, and then shove it back on the wall."

" Yeah."

" If it's not pre-bent in this fashion, we'll have a real hard time getting it back on the wall."

" Sure. And this is just gonna be an outlet here in the kitchen?"

" Yes, sir."

" Good."

" This one here is the convenience outlet. for your toaster or that type of thing."

" Okay. Thanks, Pete. I look forward to weeks to come when this is all coming together."

Keep electrical wires separate from computer or cable wires. The household current carried through electrical wires can cause interference in other cables. An easy solution is to keep then at least 4 inches apart and never tie them together. If they need to cross, keep them at right angles.
