" What's the first step?"

" On the first step is to take it and put it in inside the opening, set it in where it's gonna be and scribed the head."

" Yeah."

" And lift up."

" Not get it perfect..."

" So not too many tools just a pencil and pry bar. Can I give you a hand and bring it in?"

" Sure."

" Okay."

" Okay, it's in there."

" Okay."

" You got it?"

" Yup."

" Now with this pretty much ok, isn't it?"

" Yeah, yeah."

" This type."

" It's real nice."

" So the main area of concern is the top."

" Mm-hmm."

" That's right."

" So what do you do first?"

" What we're gonna do is we've got some of this shims."

" Oh yeah, I love how you can get shims packaged nowadays, you know."

" Mm-hmm."

" Isn't that great?"

" Yeah and they're perfect every time."

" Yeah."

" So what we're gonna do is, we've already put a little space underneath the door, so that we can just slide this shims underneath. And we could also use this pry bar to bring the door up if we wanted to. And we'll put this under here and it's just a matter of tapping them and watch the top as it rises."

" Mm-hmm."

" And then the top is gonna come up enough."

" Can we add some more?"

" No, that looks good John. So now we're just gonna scribe the top of the door."

" When we get over here."

" To the top of the casing of the jamb in here."

" Of the jamb?"

" Yeah."

" Mm-hmm."

" When you're scribing you wanna keep your top of the scribe and the pencil vertical 'cause it'll pick up the exact head of the door and when we bring it back we're gonna lift it back up again and make sure the reveal is right."

" Now this is the odd thing I wanna talk about, this is an interesting work bench you fellows have, tell me about it."

" Well, this door bench actually doubles up as the work table put a piece of plywood over it and you got a complete access."

" And you've got some old carpeting on the edges, so that if you put doors down you don't have to worry about scratching them."

" Yeah."

" And so, it also important with pre-finished doors too."

" Mm-hmm."

" So inside here we've made some holes in the bench so that we can stick our drills and routers and what have you in there."

" Then you get power."

" You got plenty of power, plenty of outlets."

" What's this over here?"

" And over here what we've done is we've put an adjustable shelf standard on here. And we just put these brackets on it and if we have a shorter door we just raise them up, lock it in, and now we can do a real small door, a 2 foot door or whatever."

" Terrific."

" Well are we ready to put this big guy down there?"

" Yup."

" What's the X here for?"

" The X is a reference point. So you know that the hinge side is on the inside and the door is on the inside so you don't make a mistake on there."

" You don't wanna get your sides confused."

" Yeah."

" Alright, so this is all that we have to scribe up right Jack?"

" That's right."

" And you're gonna use your power plane."

" Yeah, we got a power plane, I'm gonna set it kind of light right now."

" Go for it."

" And we're gonna turn it on and just follow that line."

" So I know how I'm doing in the line, but what am I doing down here. Got a little bit of a gap up here, so that's how we tell if we're square. I know I've got to bring a little bit more over there."

" Alright, well the door has scribed, it's been sanded, what's the next step?"

" Well the next step is putting the hinges on and I made a mark on the door, it coincides with the mark on the jamb."

" Okay."

" And strike a line here and that'll be the middle of the hinge."

" Now because this is an arch door, this is as high up along the door as you can actually put something on and it'll still be flat, it starts to curve here."

" Right, generally they have a tab on the hinge template that'll butt up against the square top."

" This is a pretty nice hinge template."

" Yeah, it really makes the job easy. So we mark this and put this right in the middle and we get this, this all have been pre-set."

" And this template pores will serve as a guide for the router, that's gonna plow out the excess wood so that we can put our hinge down and have it more to stint."

" All set."

" Ready?"

" Ready."

" And the same template is used on the jamb."

" Center all the screws, now we have left Bob, is to put the hinges on here and then the jamb and then we're set."

" Move it out just a little bit Jack."

" So this are oiled bronze ball bearing hinges and you really do need 4 of them."

" Yeah, yeah with the door this weight it's recommended."

" Okay the moment of truth. Beautiful."

Installing an Impact-Resistant Front Door
Installing an Impact-Resistant Front Door

Bob is back at the Punta Gorda, Florida, storm-ready house for the installation of the hurricane-resistant front door. Jesse Gonzalez from Mercedes Homes joins Bob for the installation of an oversized front door with impact-resistant side lite. Like the windows of the home, the door is installed agains a pre-cast lip so that it can resist blown-in during a storm. The sill and the added concrete lip will also help protect against water infiltration during a storm. The door is unusual in that it swings out, a feature that will help keep it and the house envelope in tact when pressured by high winds.

Relocating the Front Door
Relocating the Front Door

Bob works with GC Charlie Tomaszewski and Matt Alexander to move the Medford home's original front door over to the left. This will allow them to frame in a proper foyer to catch the drafts during cold weather. The original door was very simply framed with just a 2 x 4 serving as a header. Because the house has a balloon frame they won't be able to get a king stud in the same way they did when the house was originally framed. The new header will be constructed from two 2 x 10s sandwiched on a regular piece of one inch board and will be supported by two king studs and will provide the full dimension of the studs that were there. In removing the sheathing they discover that the home's original cedar clapboards had been covered first with cedar shingles and later with man-made shingles. Next they install new jack studs to support the door header and then cut the sheathing to create the new opening for the door. Finally they move the old door frame into its new location.

Boost Resale Value with Paint
Boost Resale Value with Paint

Here's another great tip from BobVila.com. How do you ensure you ll get the selling price you want for your home in a buyer s market? Now is not the time to install those granite countertops you ve been dreaming of because you probably won t get your money back. To get the best price you can without breaking the bank, grab a roller or hire a painter. Paint is the tried-and-true, budget home improvement that realtors recommend. Pay special attention to the areas that potential buyers will see first. On the front fa ade or even just the area around the front door, scrape and repaint any peeling or flaking areas to improve that all-important first impression. Be sure to repair any damage, nail holes or cracks, and choose an eggshell or a matte paint finish to take the focus off any imperfections. If the paint s still in good condition, a light pressure wash will brighten it up and welcome visitors. If your front door is purple or your wallpaper saw Nixon impeached, now is the time to go for cream, white or beige. Some realtors even recommend repainting the whole interior in off-white to provide a clean slate. It might not be your style, but the more neutral your home s color palette, the more possibilities a buyer will see there, and that s where your work will pay off.
