" So you have got a total of what?"
" I have 5."
" Five."
" 5 Queen Palms aboard."
" Queen Palms."
" And they're pretty big things aren't they?"
" Well, our longest one is 30 foot."
" and they're containerized. Now Steve, we are looking at a garden area here that is just really not that big and I am quite interested to see what your scheme is, where are you gonna be putting them?"
" Well Bob we're gonna be putting the tallest Queen Palm, the very back here next to the house."
" Close up to the house. Close up to the house."
" Yeah."
" And then we're gonna follow right in front of it with a shorter."
" We're going back in this corner over here with another tall full tree."
" Yeah."
" To block this board right in here and cut off the corner of this building."
" And hide some of that facade that's not too attractive, yeah."
" That's correct, yes."
" And of course I see there all in the middle of mixing all of the potting medium to see."
" All the -- yes."
" Yeah."
" One right in there and we have another Queen Palm going right over here, it's gonna be..."
" Up against the wall there."
" Out of way so we get, so they're not all in the same line."
" Okay."
" We're gonna tackle back and forth with them."
" And are we ready to unload some of these? I see there's a boom on a truck, so I imagine that's how you do it."
" Well yes, we're gonna have to crane this 'cause they're quite heavy, they're about, well some are 1,600 pounds, the biggest one the 30 footer probably 3,000 pounds."
" Really?"
" Yes."
" Okay, why don't we get started and take one of the trucks so we can look at it."
" Alright. Alright."
" Hey hold it right there. Okay, watch out. Come to that. They're setting in with the vans."
" So Steve, how long has this palm been growing in a container like this?"
" This tree has been in this container about 2 years, but it started out as a small seedling that's planted in the small container."
" Yeah."
" And kept, they kept transferring it to larger containers."
" So how old is it?"
" This tree is about 9 years old."
" Really? And how much is it worth? What do you have to pay for something like this?"
" This tree here is about $600 tree retail."
" That seems like a bargain."
" And also this tree was known in Southern California."
" Yeah."
" Oh that's right."
" Yeah."
" So it's a California tree."
" It's acclimated right?"
" Acclimated right."
" Okay so now we've got to tear the container apart right?"
" Yes, we're gonna cut the vans."
" Go for it."
" I just bought so we can..."
" Can I give you a hand?"
" Just watch you don't get your fingers from in there."
" Yeah, right, here you go."
" You can see it's really tight."
" Oh yeah."
" Because this roots have really expanded up near to the bottom."
" Look at the bends, so it's really part bound, beautiful."
" Hold them."
" How are you gonna fit this huge root ball into that hole down there?"
" Well, we're gonna take, I'm gonna shave part of this ball off and make it fit up against that wall, so it'll fit between the pipes in the wall."
" Yeah."
" And..."
" And how do you shave the root ball?"
" We're gonna use an ax."
" Let's see."
" This ax right here. Now we may have to shave 2 sides to make it fit but we're leaving 2 sides perfectly intact here. The palms have a tremendous root system and there's no harm at all to this tree doing this."
" Okay we've shaved 2 sides of the root ball and I guess you've measured it, so that you know it's gonna fit in that corner over there. My question is what's the wisdom of putting something like this so close to a water line and gas line?"
" Well, palms having such a small root system, it's very thick but it's very fine."
" Yeah."
" It reduces the danger of that they have into this lines. If this was a tree which had a large roots, we're gonna have a danger of breaking this types."
" But this roots just kind of net their way around."
" That's correct and we're gonna plant it sort of under that pipe. We should extend pretty close to our position right there that we need. Okay Bob, how we're doing?"
" We're gonna clear just fine. Alright Steve, that's 2 down 3 more to go."
" Yes."
" What are the differences it's gonna make in the front of the house here?"
" Isn't that beautiful?"
" Okay, there it goes. Well, the rain has really cramp our style right?"
" Yeah."
" That other big one is supposed to go in there and you don't wanna put it in there."
" No, it's too wet today to put that there, there's much water in the hole plus we have to raise that there's some high tension wires out here that's very dangerous."
" Yeah."
" So we're gonna hold off on that today Bob."
" But this is starting to really look excellent Steve, I mean you've got, what, 3 big ones in place and then what is the other plant material that you're planning to put in here."
" Well we're gonna be lowering, using a lot of low shrubs, acts of planting some vines, ground cover and color throughout this planting area."
" But none of that gets done now right?"
" No, this is after the hardscape. "
