Grand Tour of the Media Room, Kitchen and Living Room

In his grand finale here in Malibu Beach, Bob and our designer, Robyn, take us on a tour of the finished California-Spanish dream house. We look at the media room, kitchen, and living/dining areas. In the media room she went with an ode to west theme. In the Kitchen it is both elegant and informal with its circular wall. Old Brazilian hand carved dining table ties it together. In the living room She pulled together pieces from all over to replicate looks of the Adamson house and other areas of Southern California. She used unbleached twill fabric on the sofas and a leather trunk from South America as the coffee table.

" -Where should we start?"

" -Come, come, come to the media room."

" -Okay. Oh, it's great. I love the colors in here."

" -Thank God."

" -Yeah."

" -I basically finished. Stance here from Bo is putting in the finishing touches----"

" -Speaker system, yeah."

" -on the speaker system."

" -Now, what's your design theme in here? What were you thinking?"

" -Ode to the West. Can you see it? I did the walls, ragged them to make it look old. We did this old parchment shade----"

" -But the colors, the colors are fantastic."

" -Antique gray, Turkish, old Turkish fabric and I had this Navajo print in the columns in the [unk], and then we moved into these [unk] which I thought would be nice, these curtains."

" -So that's Mexican, yeah."

" -That's Mexican. Isn't it lovely?"

" -Beautiful. And of course, it's a cosy small room and it's focused on the TV set 'cause you really gotta come here to watch big screen TV. And all these cabinets that were put in actually started out as the clear pine that you see the corners which hasn't been distressed and varnished yet. Nice job. Well, Stance, are you finished yet?"

" -Yeah, we're just about done, Bob. We're gonna----"

" -Looks good. What kind of sound are we gonna get out of these little speakers?"

" -We're gonna get some incredible sound out of these speakers."

" -Well, let's hear something."

" -Let's take a listen."

" -That's fabulous. Are those little speakers? Is that it?"

" -Well, it sounds as though all the sound is coming out of those speakers, but it really isn't. That's the secret. All of the low notes, the base tones are actually coming out of what looks like a [unk] and ventilation grill down here in the floor."

" -So the other component is in between the joists down there?"

" -That's exactly right."

" -And we've got this basically in all the rooms around the house. How about outside on the deck?"

" -We have speakers out on the deck as well."

" -Can you control everything from here?"

" -We can control the entire system right from this remote and one of the things that's a little bit different about this is you don't have to point it right at the components or be in the same room as the components."

" -So, it's not an infrared----?"

" -It's not infrared. It's an RF technology."

" -Radiofrequency."

" -Yeah. It means that you can wander all throughout the house and control the system anywhere you are."

" -Can you control more than one---- if you wanna hear a CD playing like we just did in one part of the house and hear the radio elsewhere, it would do that?"

" -That's right. It's elegant and yet it seems informal and at the beach."

" -That's what we were trying to do. This was great working with this curbed built-in buffeter which is really useful and gorgeous."

" -Yeah."

" -I had a little bit of trouble with finding something to hang on this curved wall, but I discovered a little funky mirror that I thought---- you could see the view of the ocean and then----"

" -And the flowers, the colors, everything is terrific. You know, this circular wall is one of my favorite design features in the house. I think the architect, Barry [unk], did a fantastic job with the shafts."

" -It's great."

" -And I love that. I love this."

" -Oh, these are all Brazilian hand-carved pieces. Aren't they gorgeous?"

" -Very nice table. Very appropriate I think for a Spanish-California house and it also has a sense of something that it'll be there forever."

" -Try to lift it."

" -Yeah. And Joe you've been here forever. You've been working hard and I really wanna thank you."

" -Thank you, Bob."

" -You've done a marvelous job of bringing this house in in time even though we've had the worst weather in California history practically."

" -Well, we've got 35 days of rain, so it's really been a challenge doing this."

" -Well, congratulations and good luck."

" -Thanks to you. Thank you."

" -Thanks. I can't imagine getting any work done here in this kitchen when you look out of the Pacific coast----"

" -A window thing."

" -Yeah, it's beautiful. But what did you think about working with beautiful Mexican ceramics like this and all these bold colors?"

" -Well, one of my great finishes in life is my pottery collection and this was a real stimulus for me to find all these American pieces from about 1900 to 1940. The colors all just worked right in. That---- here is Bower. That cookie jar is McCoy."

" -Excellent-looking stuff. So the furniture is white. The wall----"

" -Unbleached toile."

" -But then look at the stenciling here. That's magnificent."

" -[unk] from the Adamson house in Malibu. Isn't that gorgeous?"

" -Very well done. And it looks like it's been there for a long time."

" -Well, they sand it down after they painted on and then they rag the same parchment color over it that they've done on the rest of the walls in this room."

" -Robbin, have you been to every antique show and flea market in Southern California to collect stuff?"

" -How'd you know, Bob?"

" -Gorgeous stuff in here. And the furniture really, really does look comfortable."

" -What do you think?"

" -Yeah, you could come here----"

" -10 out of 10?"

" -Come in here in your swimsuit from the beach and hop right down."

" -No swimsuits. Look at this antique best Arabian-Turkish rug."

" -Very, very nice. Very faded, huh? It goes so well here."

" -I love that."

" -What's---- What do we got here for a coffee table?"

" -This is a leather trunk from South America. It's also quite old and I just love the honey color. I thought it fit in terrific with the terra cotta that----"

" -It's beautiful."

" -we have here on the floor."

" -Absolutely perfect."

Outdoor Speakers Installation
Outdoor Speakers Installation

Bob discusses the installation of outdoor speakers with Daryl Foster. The Bose speakers are made specifically for outdoor use to stand up to the elements and sound good.

Installing Whole-Home Audio
Installing Whole-Home Audio

Bob talks with family friend Andrew Gillis, an expert in the latest audio/visual equipment. The unit installed in the Melrose home is a Bose Lifestyle Whole Home Audio system, which features surround sound for the room. Speakers that connect to the system were also installed in different zones throughout the house and yard. Using this system, different music selections can be played in different parts of the home. One of the zones was connected to the stereo wirelessly. Fixed zones were also put in the kitchen and garden. These different zones can be controlled via remote. Up to 340 CDs can be stored in the central player. Music libraries can be set up for each member of the family. Based on that person's past musical selections, the system can adapt accordingly and help the user find preferred songs more easily. The Bose system has multiple components and is connected using a Bose interconnect cable. In the garden, Bose outdoor-rated speakers were installed. These speakers can be partially buried into the ground, making them less visible. The base system costs about $5,000. The remotes can control the base unit from anywhere within the house. A product called Adapt IQ allows homeowners to tune the system's surround sound automatically. The space in the basement is an unusual space and the tuner should be used when all the furniture is in place to detetermine the settings for the speakers.

Structured Wiring Installed
Structured Wiring Installed

Bob meets Tim Woods from the Internet Home Alliance at the Home Director network connection center in the basement. It's where all the structured wiring comes in and where the main controls happen: 2 +2 (cat-5 and RJ), cable broadband, security link-up, telephone, etc. Because the homeowners are a dual career couple they need to be connected to each other (home office to the studio) and to the outside world in a broadband environment. In the kitchen Larry Hicks of Home Director is installing some cable for a universal 2 + 2 outlet for TV, telephone or data near the breakfast nook providing flexibility for use of a phone, screen, etc. Looking at the Alliance's wiring plan, Tim points out the security camera at the front door and the ADT iCenter security system. The study/screening room will be a real media center with speakers for dolby stereo running through the ceiling, cable broadband, and a Panasonic high definition TV. There willl be speakers throughout the house allowing different music to play in diffferent rooms all controlled from the audio center in the kitchen. The Cisco Aironet system is a wireless network for the home allowing the homeowner to put a wireless card into his laptop and wirelessly port the web anywhere in the house. Because this is an old house in which they are trying to preserve the original plaster and lath walls, the installation of the structured wiring has required different tools and is a much slower process than in new construction, but it can be done.
