" And we're gonna put the faucet in first."

" Yeah."

" And get you to hold that for me."

" Sure."

" Slide that in----"

" That's to be held up in place."

" Right, and----"

" Just keep it centered."

" That's the first thing you do is get this fitting tighten up."

" And this tightens the faucet down. Hold it in place. That nice and straight Bob."

" Yup."

" It's nice and straight."

" What's the next step Steve?"

" The next step is to put the shutoff valve in Bob."

" And this is---- this little brand's number, which shutoff the water to the faucet, so do you have to repair it or recede it. And what is this white stuff?"

" This white stuff is pipe dope."

" What do you need that for?"

" This lubricates it and makes it easy for to go on."

" So, it makes for better sealing and threading."

" Right. And every fix you have to have shutoff on it."

" Right. Otherwise, you would have to shut the water up and down in the basement to the whole house right?"

" Right."

" And then----"

" And now, we're gonna measure the valve onto the coupling."

" So, I noticed you're up above the end of the---- You're measuring from inside?"

" Right, to makeup----"

" [unk]."

" to makeup inside the valve and inside the coupling."

" So, you had a 1/2 inch in both ends."

" Right, it's 12-5/8. Measure this."

" And mark on it there. Was it 12 and----"

" 12-5/8."

" Okay. And then the front part. So now, do we get the solder? Very nice. Now, we're done with the metal part of the job, and I guess the next part involves the PVC. We've already got the trim for the draining place down there right Steve?"

" Right, and also we have left to do is put on the trap."

" And what is the purpose the trap?"

" The trap is what prevents stored gases in coming back up into the air in the room."

" Into the house, yeah."

" Right."

" It's essentially at that curve and the bottom of it, you always have a level of water there, which keeps any gases from the rest of the plumbing system in the house from being able to enter----"

" Exactly."

" in the room. And this is this very smelly stuff that to make you dizzy, so you wanna close the can up whenever you're through with it. Now you just tightened that top junction without having to put any pipe dope or anything else on it right?"

" No. It has a plastic washer in it."

" Yeah."

" Just wipe out the excess glue."

" And you've done it."

Low-Flow Showerheads and Faucets
Low-Flow Showerheads and Faucets

Here's another great tip from BobVila.com. Showers account for more than one-fifth of the water Americans use every day. We can conserve more of this precious resource with a low-flow showerhead. If you re not convinced you need to cut your water flow, put a 2-quart pan under your showerhead and turn it on. If it takes less than 12 seconds to fill the pan, you could conserve. Low-flow showerheads limit flow to 2 and a half gallons per minute or less and cost between $8 and $50. Contrary to popular belief, they do not reduce the water pressure of your shower. Some mix the water with air, others pulse and some are elevated to provide a rain shower effect. For between $70 and $250, you can buy one that will even filter chlorine and other chemicals from your water for a truly clean shower that won t dry out your skin. Take a look at the end of your faucet: Most are threaded to receive an aerator. If your existing aerator has a number greater than 2.75 GPM written on it or there isn t one at all, it s an easy upgrade to install. Remove the old one by turning it to the left. If it s stuck, gently use vice grips or tongue-and-groove pliers. Add a piece of Teflon tape over the faucet threads before screwing on the new one to form a tight seal. Faucet aerators only cost $5 to $10 and will pay for themselves in water savings in only a few months. Installing faucet aerators and low-flow showerheads in your home is one of the best ways to reduce your environmental footprint, and it can save you 50 percent of your water and hot water costs to boot. Plumbing Fittings and Faucets
Plumbing Fittings and Faucets

Bob and Dan Gerry form Tranquility Plumbing agree that budgeting for high-quality fittings and fixtures is important. The Moen diverter and sprayer that Gerry is installing is a great unit that is easily repaired by the homeowner. Gerry says that it is important to consider availability of parts when selecting fixtures, because every faucet will need repairs sometime. Gerry runs the supply line then adds a weight that will pull it though as soon as the sink is installed. He also fits the shut-off valves and tightens them in place so that water can be shut off at the site without needing to turn off service to the entire house.
