" [0:00:00]"

" -Well, we're gonna get ready to talk about putting a lockset on front door. You know, most folks really don't want a glass door at the main entry to the house for security reasons, privacy, or whatever, but here the thinking was, because we have that beautiful view of the lake."

" -Yeah."

" -Right out there."

" -We wanted to be able have visitors come to the front door and see through the house, which I think is a very good idea. How do you like this door?"

" -I love this door. I think it's terrific. It's really nice and safe because it got this built in 1 piece [0:00:30] lockset and deadbolt system that comes right from the top to the bottom."

" -So, there are actually rods behind the plate here that, then at the bottom, go right in to a hole and the threshold"

" -And at the top and the header, right?"

" -And it comes to us that way."

" -Yeah."

" -Which is nice."

" -So you get really solid setup. What I like about these doors is you think there are sets of double doors that would open wide, but in fact this is stationary and then the single patio doors hinge in the middle, and 1 thing that I like about that, is that you don't have to worry about astragal or about a draft breaking through in the middle door. [0:01:00]"

" -It's a tighter door."

" -So you have the hardware, we're all set to go."

" -Yeah. Just starting to put this together and main thing is the, to read and understand these directions."

" -Oh, made in Germany."

" -What's the first step?"

" -The first step is to put the cylinder assembly together with the key cylinder here."

" -Okay."

" -And let's make sure that we get that correct. [0:01:30] Okay and this is the outside here."

" -Yeah."

" -And that slips in just like that. If you can put that in that side."

" -Alright, I just have to fit in right there."

" -And the next thing I have here is the lock actuator."

" -Which is just a little square piece of metal that goes in."

" -Okay, that's right in place"

" -Okay."

" -And, now this plate, they're calling retainer plate. This holds all of that together. [0:02:00]"

" -Then 2 screws."

" -2 screws, right. [0:02:30]"

" -And the next thing is for us to put on escutcheon plates"

" -Yeah. The escutcheon plate is really a shield and this is solid brass and it goes like that."

" -Yup."

" -And it's a shield that protects the works of the lock, not only from the weather but from anybody trying to jimmy the lock, on both sides?"

" -On both sides. We line those together. We have to line them up pretty good because there is not a lot tolerance with this."

" -Yeah, it is pretty slim profile and very, very simple lockset. [0:03:00]"

" -You got it?"

" -I think I got it."

" -How's that feel?"

" -Yup."

" -Okay."

" -Good."

" -Okay, we're almost there. Now, we've got to figure out how to get handles on? [0:03:30]"

" -Yes, the next thing we gonna do is put the spindles into the handles and we have those Allen wrench that comes with it.We'll use that. This is the."

" -The set screw. -The set screw."

" -We will set that right there. I just wanna be sure it moves in the direction. Okay. And the handles always wanna to be pointed towards the glass and that goes there. Okay. [0:04:00]"

" -Open this up."

" -Okay."

" -Here we go. Okay, now there is a little block that comes from the factory and here it's gonna pop out."

" -Right."

" -Good."

" -Yeah."

" -Let's test the keys a minute, huh. [0:04:30]"

" -Okay. Hold this. For this to work, you wanna, the handle lifts up and that activates the top and the bottom locks."

" -Okay."

" -And then the deadbolt. "

" -And then the deadbolt comes through."

" -That's right. It's the only way it will work."

" -Alright, let shut her up."

Installing Restored Brass Door Hardware and Faux Finishing the Mantelpiece
Installing Restored Brass Door Hardware and Faux Finishing the Mantelpiece

Bob and Ryley install the restored door hardware. Greg Rochlin (project architect) had the lacquer coated brass hardware intricately removed and numbered to insure its proper placement in the finished house. Rochlin polished the hardware with jewelers rouge to return it to its polished brass original finish. Ryley stresses the importance of organizing the pieces as they are removed and demonstrates their installation process. With the lacquer removed the knobs will need to be polished a couple times a year. Bob introduces a piece of furniture he has had in his home for a number of years. This period piece features Flame Mahogany veneers and Tiger Maple. This piece is the inspiration for the faux finished mantle in the den. Kim Sweet, the project artist, uses layer upon layer of colors and finishes to recreate the antique wood finish.
