Demolition in the Upstair Living Quarters
computer-generated transcript - may not be 100% accurate
" Now, we're on the second floor of the governor's mansion which traditionally has been the private quarters, bedrooms, private living room and the likes, and last week, we took a little bit of a tour that gave us an idea of how the first family lives, the fact that they don't have a proper kitchen up there, the fact that, you know, the rooms were very cut up and now, in just about a week's time, a very serious demolition crew has done some real damage in here, as you can see. This is the second floor rear portion of the 1813 Federal House which is, you know, a, a high-style house with some very, very good construction and framing but there are areas where the architect is a little bit concerned that things are weak, so we've got temporary supports in place, until we can get an assessment from the engineers. This is a little staircase that leads up to the attic space and something's been cut away there. If you, if you follow me down this way, you can see that all these joists span the whole area with a good 18 feet. They're nice big timbers in the corner here. We've got this brace. This thing is very finely built, but still, you never know what happens during the course of a lifetime of a building like this, perhaps a heating contractor cut this out, but you know, you can't do that. You'd actually cut part of the joist away, so there's lots of repairs to do here."
