" Alright, I'll bet you these about 8 to 10 layers of paint on this."
" Actually, yes, I think it's more like 20. They're almost like a bunch."
" Okay, that's the stock."
" Now this, this should have slipped out."
" The zinc should come out with it. Just got those nails out a few minutes ago. There's the old zinc, the weather stripping."
" Okay, now can you slip that chain out of there?"
" Yeah, let me see if I can."
" Stone veneer with some old nails, settled bronze chains."
" You know when you got it."
" Yeah. It's gonna take a few minutes for this thing to loosen up. Do you see a cat's paw here?"
" Yup."
" Next. There's the one. Wanna get that nail in up there so that the pulley doesn't get away from us."
" Alright."
" I got it."
" Got it?"
" Yeah."
" Okay?"
" Great. Okay."
" I'll get this side."
" [unk] this way and then"
" Give me this vise grips maybe."
" Oh yeah."
" Get the nail in here."
" I'll hold it for you."
" Got it?"
" Yup."
" That'll secure the weights."
" Okay."
" So that it won't get away."
" See here's the old access pockets so we can pull that out later on, we get the lead, get the weight out"
" Okay."
" so that we can now re-tie the new bronze chain."
" So what do you think of this sash? "
" You know, you know this one's in better shape than a lot of them."
" Really?"
" Yeah. We- we looked at one earlier, it's got at least 22 coats of paint and so we'll get it back to the shop and we remove all the paint 'cause it's got a lot of lead in it."
" Yes."
" In this case, we're gonna have to recast one of these bronze poles. It's- it's long been gone. We used this one as- as a mark up."
" So what's the exact procedure now? What's the- what's the first thing you do?"
" Strip the paint off first. Remove all the paint and then we assess the wood. Make sure it's in good shape. It's not"
" Uh huh."
" won't consolidate with epoxies or if there's any rotten wood, we'll do what's called a wood Dutchman where we'll actually insert"
" Right."
" same piece of wood."
" Okay. And what about now, do you do this?"
" What about the glass itself, I mean, this glass, do you think it's the original?"
" Yeah it's, in most cases it's original. I can see in this case there's probably 4 pieces that are original in it. They're pretty easy to see in the normal light and we're marking each piece of glass, identifying them on the chart, so that when removed, they go back in the same, right back in the same spot. If it's a replaced piece of glass, you know, that's gonna replace in recent years, we'll put a piece of reproduction of blown glass back that would match the original appearance which is somewhat wavy."
" Okay. We remove the old glazing which is holding them in. At that point, as I said we'll make any of the wooden repairs, we need to do epoxies, consolidation, reputty them, put the glass back in again."
" Yeah."
" And right usually just before we do that, we consolidate the whole thing in an alkyd resin"
" Okay."
" you know, the part that it's in- in many primer and then we'll prime it all."
" Oh it does, so it comes back here prime?"
" Yeah."
" They're gonna deliver a totally prime and then painters here are gonna do a top coat."
" Have you figured how many windows we have here?"
" In the 2nd floor, we've got like 25 openings so 50 sash at least."
