Hanging Double Doors
computer-generated transcript - may not be 100% accurate
" Here we are on the 2nd floor and this is the entrance to the private apartment for the First Family and we got Mike Smith and Bob Ryley here"
" -Hi Bob."
" -who are working on the doors. Now hanging a double door is not as easy as it might sound, right?"
" -Well, you gotta make sure that they meet when you're all done with the end, but this door here is a little tougher than the other ones because it's 7 foot as opposed to 6 foot 6, which is a normal door."
" -6'6" or 6'8", right?"
" -So, we're right in the middle of putting on the hinge template guides and normally this would all be one to three templates would be altogether on one rail."
" -On one steel bar, right?"
" -That's correct, but we have to separate them because of the size of the door."
" -Oh Okay."
" -Yes."
" -So what's this, is this the spacer that you're gonna use?"
" -That's right. We're setting the top one right now."
" -Let's drive those pins in and in this here"
" -Now is there any logic to how- how these are spaced, I mean, I see that the top one, you've lined it up, the finial of the hinge lines up nicely with the top of the panel here, and the bottom one kind of does the same thing, the bottom finial and the cornered panel line up. Is that just by coincidence Bob or is that"
" -No, that's- that's what the architect wanted. He wanted to, just exactly as you explained. That was his directive was."
" -Okay. That's what we're shooting for."
" -And that's why we have to change the normal setup on the jig."
" -Right."
" -Here you go."
" -This one here."
" -Hey, I'll set the router out."
" -Okay, so now you removed them from here and you put them on the jamb, right?"
" -That's right. You wanna use the bottom on the top of the jamb, I'm gonna square up this,"
" -The corners around it."
" -Right."
" -And you've gotta square them off so that the hinge sets in the right."
" -I'm gonna go into this with the flat side of the cutting edge."
" -And then the beveled side for cleaning it up."
" -Exactly."
" -Here you go Mike."
" -Now, the one that was on the bottom has to go on the top and it has to do with the depth. There you go."
" -[unk] stop up here."
" -It's the top."
" -Yes."
" -And then, of course, we just use the same spacer."
" -Got it."
" -Use the same spacer and there goes in the middle."
" -And now we rout again."
" -Alright. So this is [unk]"
" -Where- where would you be without a jig like this, you know."
" -Oh we gotta have it for hanging doors."
" -Anybody that hangs doors has to have a jig."
" -[Unk] carpeting to make sure you don't damage things and, of course, the shims hold it right in place."
" -So what are we ready to do now, Mike?"
" -We're getting ready to pre-drill for the hinges on the door."
" -So you have to pre-drill a pilot hole to make sure that when you're gonna drive your screws in the, you don't split the wood."
" -Right"
" -What kind of a bit is this?"
" -This is called a vix bit and it's set up for a #14 wood screw and it all starts the centering [unk] now."
" -Yeah, it's spring loader, isn't it?"
" -Uh huh."
" -So that when you put it under, the sleeve centers it, and you just plunge in and get your holes drilled?"
" -That's right."
" -Let's look at this hinges and let me just these are not your average hinges, right?"
" -No, usually in a residential, you've got 3 1/2 inch hinges. These are 4 1/2 hinges and also it's not a loose pin hinge. They're ball-bearing hinge. "
" -It's a ball-bearing hinge. "
" -Alright."
" -So that when you hang this door, we're gonna set the hinge on the door side and then when we bring it over to the jamb, [unk] comes with it, so we have to screw it right on to the jamb and with- the doors that we have in this house, you know, some of them are gonna have to be adjusted."
" -Right. Rather than popping that loose pin."
" -You can't do it because it's ball bearing."
" -So we're gonna have to take the screws out, so it's a"
" -Hopefully it's gonna work out just fine."
" -Oh yes. Yes."
" -I'm sure it'll work out fine."
" -And now we're pre-drilling on the- the door itself using the same bit."
" -That sleeve on the bit is set so that we're going to the right depth every time, right."
" -Yes the drilling now is okay."
" -Alright, let's see how they meet."
" -Okay."
" -That's nice."
" -That is nice."
" -Excellent."
" -Just a little bit of an overlap to plain that."
" -Right. So all we're gonna have to do it on one door because it's only part of 8th of an inch, so over more than that, we'd have to do it to both doors."
" -That's great."
" -Nice job guys, Mike, Bob. See you later."
" -Okay thanks."
