" -Alright, so what we've got here is an opening for essentially a retrofit into a new construction situation which is not always what you want but the skylights were not specified by the architect's plans so we're putting them in after the fact and what Russell and Kevin have already done is they've started off by stiffening the whole set of rafters here with a couple of temporary 2 x 4's and these make sure that the whole rafter system won't shake and rattle when we're cutting the hole out. Then they removed the rafters that were in the way of the skylight and in their place, headed off at the top and at the bottom with doubled up members of the same dimension and did the same thing to either side and at this point we've got a framed opening for the skylight and the rest of the work really gets done from up here and down there, but let me check in with Kevin to take a closer look at the type of skylight we're using, here you go"

" -Okay, now the skylight itself is a new type of Anderson product that has this patented snap out sash. "

" -You got it, I'll hold on to it"

" -Thanks Bob"

" -And so it makes installation a lot easier because we can remove the sash and just deal with the frame. I know it's high performance glass and so it's got all the energy requirements that we normally worry about, and okay, so the sash snaps out, exactly how does that happen?"

" -We undo this plastic chipping clips"

" -Okay"

" -These little screws, I'm gonna flip out the whole ears"

" -And they are for attachment points unto the roof sheeting"

" -Yeah, correct, we'll add screws to these other holes when I get all 4 of them I'll have 2 screws on each one of these clips and when we set it on the roof, these brackets are recessed on the back side and the screws will fit"

" -Exactly,"

" -Flustered in there."

" -Pass it on to Russell, You goin up on the roof, Kevin?"

" -Yes sir"

" -Alright. Alright so the little brackets each have the extra screw in them On the back side, which makes it rigid, and that's how you attach it to the sheeting itself"

" -Good Russell?"

" -Yeah."

" -Alright Russ, you wanna pass up the sash? And, now the snap-on, what's to keep it from popping out again if there's a, some sort of high winder situation?"

" -Look at famous steel clips Bob, here on the inside and that sash this time is gonna snap right into that"

" -So that holds it in place?"

" -That's correct."

" -And if it ever broke and you had to replace it from the inside you could loosen it up"

" -They've solved that with holes on the inside."

" -Right, okay."

" -That's her"

" -That's it."

" -Yup."

" -And now when the roofer comes to finish up here, the kit comes with a top and bottom flushing as well as with all the step flushings that will go underneath"

" -That's correct"

" -But these will be covered by the red metal roof, right?"

" -That's correct, everything except for just this little bit."

" -Yeah, colors look good together, don't they?"

Installing a Skylight
Installing a Skylight

Bob and Chris Vila meet Dino Koukoudakis from Dino's Construction who is installing a custom rectangular skylight from Wasco. This four-by-six foot argon-filled, low-e coated skylight comes ready to mount from the factory. Taking a look at the opening from below, Bob and Chris point out how the natural light provided by the skylight opens up the bedroom to natural light, giving the space a larger look and feel.

Replacing the Roof: Sheathing to Asphalt Shingles and Skylight Installation
Replacing the Roof: Sheathing to Asphalt Shingles and Skylight Installation

Bob flashed back to the installation of the new roof. First the crew removed the old layers of roofing material from the barn. Next they added a layer of Louisiana Pacific oriented strand board (OSB) over the original sheathing. It's manufactured with thin wafers of wood, resins and wax compressed under intense heat. When used as roof sheathing it's extremely resistant to moisture damage. Then they stapled down a layer of felt paper and marked with chalk lines to lay out the courses of asphalt shingles. Since these are double layer shingles, they're fastened along the pre-marked white line to assure that both layers are attached to the roof. Frames for the Velux VSE skylights were installed. These vented skylights will be operated with a hand-held remote. Copper step flashing is added to the side of the skylights and the asphalt roof shingles are fastened up to it.

The adjustable design of these skylights allows them to fit into tight spaces, and around difficult framing. The domed cap uses prisms to maximise the effects of the reflected light along the aluminum shaft. It's easy to install with just a few common tools.

Bob meets with Ryley, the carpenter, and installs a Velux skylight on a curb mount. Ryley discribes the mounting hardware and screws used to mount the window and Bob explains how the shingles will be applied once the roof is completed. Bob also demonstrates flexibilty of the window design which includes a collapsable balcony.
