" Well, most of the porch here is already done but I see we've still got the ceiling here to do and the stage is already set-up for us and everything so how do you want to tackle it, Kevin?"

" I think what we'll do Bob is we'll rip a 24-inch wide piece siding at the top working our way down"

" Okay"

" and we'll use a full sheet right in the middle then we'll finish with a 24-inch wide piece at the bottom"

" Yeah"

" let's fill that light fixture right there and we'll bring in the middle of the sheet, this one right up here"

" That's right"

" We don't want that to end up right on the joint, we don't want the batten strips to fall right on it."

" Okay, sounds like a good plan"

" Let' do it"

" We'll run through in this direction."

" I'm good there."

" Okay."

" The starting point."

" Okay."

" How are you down there?"

" Good. Right on the line."

" Right there?"

" Yeah."

" Okay."

" Oh, ready for another sheet?"

" Some of you measure this light box. We'll send the measurements down to Alex and he'll cut it for us and hand us up the sheets."

" Okay."

" We got 23-1/2, 23-3/8."

" 23-3/8 to the center. Go in the other direction."

" Good."

" Okay, that's 55-3/4."

" Say when."

" I'm good there."

" Okay. It's set. But it's quite a gap we've got down there at the end. Is the trim gonna cover that?"

" Yes we've got a couple of pieces of trim that go around all these and batten strips that will take care of it. Say Bob, let's put this up."

" Okay. Alright. That's the trim that covers the gap. I'm good there."

" Yeah, and this way here."

" Where's the trim piece, put that right in there."

" Yeah. Good."

" These battens really do a nice job of finishing this off, Kevin. I like those seams nicely."

" So, what kind of a finish you're gonna put on this Kevin?"

" This will have the trim color, just be painted as the ceiling. "

" Okay. That will look nice."

Building a Covered Porch
Building a Covered Porch

Bob lends a hand to contractor Bob Ryley as he begins construction of the porch at the project on Martha's Vineyard. Ryley starts out by explaining the use of concrete forms to Bob. He then connects pressure treated limber to the side of the house with six-inch lag bolts to secure the joists. After the joists are in place Bob and Ryley start the deck with one by four vertical grade fir. Which is a traditional material used on covered porches. After the decking is installed Ryley and Bob Start on the columns salvaged from the other side of the Victorian.

Hurricane Protection for Porches, Windows, and Doors
Hurricane Protection for Porches, Windows, and Doors

Ted Gower from Armor Screen is installing the hurricane-protection fabric that will make the lanai a hurricane shelter in case of a storm. There are bolts and clips at the top with clips along the side. The sides are locked down along the sides and bottom to resist the enormous wind pressure during a storm. This geosynthetic fabric serves in stead of plywood or other storm protection coverings. The fabric reduces 100 mile per hour (mph) winds to 3 mph and reduces it to 0 mph if rain sheets on the fabric, causing a complete wind barrier. This fabric stands up to winds and wind-borne debris, making the enclosed lanai a hurricane-safe shelter by code and by design. Armor Screen can be used on any door, window, or porch openings to protect homes from damaging winds and flying debris.
