" -This is looking good. We're finally getting cabinets in place."

" -We're setting them today and hope to have some pines to show up here in a little."

" -Are they cherry?"

" -They're cherry with the Arlington finish on them by decor."

" -Uh huh."

" -Beautiful cabinetry. "

" -And very nice. That's a pretty big drawer you've put in here."

" -Dovetail drawers, just a hard word, just a really nice, nice product."

" -Okay, now this is the part of the kitchen that's designed to be either a secondary kitchen. Have you used this part of the house as in-law suite or in this case, it's gonna be like a butler's pantry, right?"

" -That's correct."

" We're gonna use it as a butler's pantry with freezer, a wine cooler, a dishwasher, and an icemaker."

" -Okay. And what kind of countertops are going in here?"

" -These are gonna be granite, absolute black."

" -Okay. Well, this is beautiful stuff. I noticed they come through without the glass in them."

" -They don't ship the glass, I can understand why, you know."

" -Uh huh."

" -We just buy the glass locally and install it ourselves."

" -Right. Well, that's a good idea, because you don't have to worry about breakage. Let's go in here and see what they're doing with the rest of the panel. Now this is an end panel for where the refrigeration unit is going?"

" -That's correct."

" -And what are we doing here? What are we gluing at the last minute?"

" -Tom is gluing up the biscuits. We're putting a filler on the end of this refrigerator panel and we'll install it and stand it vertical and tacked it in place."

" -Now, is the filler because we needed the extra height for this refrigeration equipment?"

" -This a tall ceiling. It's 10 foot."

" -Yeah."

" -We need a full 8 foot height panel."

" -Boy, that is tall. And then it's going right up against those blocks."

" -Then you hold it in place and Donald just tacked it."

" -And then from the outside, we can just tack it to place."

" -This Northland refrigerator units, I guess they're basically commercial equipment, right?"

" -That's correct."

" -And I like the fact that it's all components."

" -These are the power module."

" -Yeah."

" -And it just comes along."

" -You got it?"

" -Hand it up to Reggie and let him snap it into place."

" -So, that the power module, the compressor and everything are in this box. You set it on top of the refrigerator freezer box, but can border this in any configuration you want, right?"

" -That's correct."

" -They really will make them to what you want the configuration to be. This one is 2 refrigerators and a freezer in the top left hand corner."

" -So, this will be a freezer shelves, icemaker, really, really nice construction. What I like about it is they get over 2 inches of rigid insulation in this whole box."

" -Big rigid box."

" -Yeah. And when you got that much insulation, you know that the efficiency of the unit is gonna be really high. This is also freezer storage?"

" -That's refrigerator on this side."

" -This is refrigerator. "

" -Yes."

" -And then this is all refrigerators on this side."

" -That's correct."

" -Okay. Nice and simple, you know, but real, real quality construction, heavy duty brackets and standards and everything else."

" -[unk]"

" -So, if you have to do a service on this or if you, you know, 20 years down the line, if something went wrong with the compressor, you just replace the compressor and you keep the unit, right?"

" -That's correct."

" -Okay."

" -And it's easy enough, the homeowner could do it themselves if needed to be."

" -Alright, well Kevin this unit is strictly for wine storage and I heard, that also cigar storage?"

" -That's correct."

" -Here we go."

" -There you go."

" -And then, this of course has to be plumped up."

" -That's correct."

" -But let's open it up and take a look. You've got what? Room here for several cases of wine, nice display, and then what's this unit here?"

" -This is a cigar humidor box that sits in here. It's got a little humidifier that we haven't unpacked yet that sits in there."

" -So you can keep cigars in here?"

" -That's correct."

" -As well as fine wines."

" -And it's got some display racks and little pull-outs. So this is just one of several Northland units that are going in the butler's pantry, right?"

" -That's correct. We'll have a full-size freezer. We have an under the counter icemaker still to come."

" -Icemaker. Uh huh."

" -Dishwasher by Whirlpool and some granite countertops and some glass."

" -Okay, and then we'll be done in here. Let's go and push that other unit in place. And now, how do you cover up all, well the power module up there."

" -It's good Gus, okay. Thank you. We're gonna use this pieces here Bob. We're gonna use, let's start with this panel that fits over the top. The panel will fit in here and now cover the power module and this panel allows the module to be removed afterwards for service."

" -Okay."

" -And inside that panel will be another decorative panel with a piece of stainless steel."

" -But what about for the rest of these? Is there another wooden piece that goes up here?"

" -We have wooden filler in there that sits here and underneath there."

" -Yeah."

" -And we'll be adding that in a little while."

" -Great. Let's talk about the rest of the kitchen, because this is the main operating kitchen."

" -That's correct."

" -That's where the pantry, as you were calling it. Is the stove over there?"

" -We'll get stove in here, 36 inch wide with a professional hood over the top."

" -Alright."

" -Wall oven and a microwave."

" -Okay. Wall oven and microwave, pantry cabinets in this corner, plenty of drawers, yeah. That's very nice. And what goes there?"

" -A dishwasher. "

" -Dishwasher and a sink?"

" -Yeah."

" -The comer sink with the one that cooks."

" -Yeah. Alright, we'll see that next week."

" -Okay."

" -Good."

Kitchenware for Easy Living and Entertaining
Kitchenware for Easy Living and Entertaining

The open-plan family room of the Punta Gorda house overlooks the canal on one side and opens onto the living area and kitchen on the other. Cecile Hemphill of Oh Cecile in San Francisco shows Bob the cookware and accessories that now fill the cupboards. Starting with Chantal cookware in bright colors, a teapot with a whistle, a Lodge pre-seasoned cast iron skillet, and a Joyce Chen wok, Hemphill has completely outfitted the kitchen for cooking and entertaining. The drawers are filled with Oxo ergonomically designed cooking utensils. Ironwood Gourmet's Acacia wood cutting boards stand ready on the counters, as does bright-colored Chantal ceramic ware that goes from the freezer to the oven to the table. Bob also remarks on the Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator-freezer that measures and dispenses water. All of the appliances are from Whirlpool, including the dishwasher and front-loading washer and dryer. Bob and Hemphill remark on the overall design of the kitchen, the openess and the size of the elements, which are perfectly scaled and large enough for easy living and frequent entertaining.

Reviewing the Kitchen Appliances
Reviewing the Kitchen Appliances

Because this is an affordable house, most of the items in the kitchen were builder-supplied. The kitchen features oak cabinets and laminated countertops. With affordable homes, it's important to acquire appliances in the most efficient way. Big builders can buy everything wholesale but smaller builders often have to depend on the local mom-and-pop suppliers. BrandSource has an online network of 2,500 dealers who are locally owned but buy in bulk so the savings are passed on to the consumer. The main door of the refrigerator is at eye level and the freezer is a pull-out drawer down below. There are two separate compartments in the freezer so items do not get buried at the bottom. A dishwasher from Fisher-Paykel features two drawer modules instead of one so smaller loads can be run more regularly. The dishwasher is Energy Star rated and is extremely efficient. An electric range from GE completes the package.

A half bathroom and a laundry were also installed in the basement of the Melrose home. These systems were installed using a pump system because the room is below street level and needs to have wastewater pumped up to the sewer lines. A SwanStone Deep Laundry Sink was put in place with a Moen faucet. A Whirlpool front-loading washer and dryer set was also installed. In order to fit so much material in a limited space, the homeowners shopped for appliances using Brandsource.com, which gave the couple detailed information on different brands, including sizes and shapes. Brandsource carries information from over 2,500 retail outlets and features $10 billion in products. The appliances were installed by a local dealer. The washing machine is a Whirlpool Duet, which features extra-large capacity, is energy efficient, and has storage in the bottom. A large freezer from Amana was installed along with a refrigerator-freezer and a GE microwave. A GE wine cooler chills beverages in the other room. The TV is a 50-inch Samsung flat panel. A 42-inch plasma Samsung TV was also installed in the master bedroom. A smaller television set was installed in the children's room. A stainless-steel grill was put in the backyard.

Time for a New Fridge?
Time for a New Fridge?

Here's another great tip from BobVila.com. After years of leftover science experiments, Thanksgiving dinners and midnight snacks, he s probably served you well, but old Mr. Fridge is adding more to your electric bill than he s worth. Your refrigerator hogs more electricity than almost anything else in your house. If it s an older model, it s using twice as much as a new Energy Star certified model would to keep the same milk cold. A new fridge is a big purchase, and there will be a small fee to dispose of the old one. But some electrical utilities are actually giving rebates of $150 or more to customers who replace their old refrigerators with new, energy-efficient models. To find out what s offered in your state, check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiencies, or D-S-I-R-E. Even without the rebate, buying an Energy Star certified refrigerator makes sense. A mid-size fridge more than 10 years old can cost $100 a year to run. Today s Energy Star compliant models cost half that much: some use less energy than a continuously running 75-watt light bulb. And with so many great new features like digital temperature control, French doors and even an alarm to tell you when the door s been left open a new fridge is a great investment that works for your family 24 hours a day!
