" -So the kitchen is open on to the family room. "

" -Yes."

" -And just because it's a family room doesn't mean that it has to be really informal. I mean, this is quite a nice antique you got in here."

" -This is a beautiful period, English Chippendale chest on chest with original brass in it."

" -Uh huh."

" -And I think it, again, sets the tone for refinement. We've got a nice big leather sofa."

" -I like the idea of placing the chest here, having a little bit of space that you can walk in between the two."

" -Yes."

" -You're kind of creating a lot of interest in here but I'll tell you what, what really catches my eye are these chairs with the red covers. They're antique as well, right?"

" -They are. They are from Golden & Associates. Andy Golden has graciously loaned us all of the antiques in the house."

" -And then, he of course, has a shop on King Street where all the great antique dealers are located here in Charleston."

" -Exactly. There are a lot of great finds and dealers."

" -And good place to go peaking, yeah. But, you know, paring it with a contemporary couch,"

" -Yeah."

" -This is antique as well, right?"

" -Yes. It is."

" -It's nice, you've got the mixture of antique pieces with modern pieces but where do you get all of those chotskies, all the accessories like the baskets on top of the chest?"

" -A lot of the accessories in the house came from Britain's Charleston. Because the house was a house large, I went on the internet and found seabuy.com. For example, the baskets, the lamp, and the [unk] came from there."

" -And then I noticed on top of here that you got a selection of this famous,"

" -What do you call it?"

" -Weave grass baskets."

" -Weave grass baskets, yeah. That's terrific."

" -They're lovely and, again, Sally helped us up there with the flowers, with dried hydrangeas."

" -Uh huh and of course we have to have the electronic part. We got a Panasonic DVD player, which meets energy star standards so we're up to date on that respect"

" -Well this is very appropriate. It's very sedate but again the scale is huge isn't it?"

" -Yes it is. I think this room blends itself nicely to this Thomasville collection."

" -This is, again, the design with, this is a like the palm frond and the coconut frond under twined and it's all the island of an idea but the scale of it is very large."

" -Yes."

" -And you've chosen things like oversized lamps, right?"

" -From seabuy.com."

" -Uh huh."

" -They came in handy."

" -Now tell me something about your choice of linens for the bed."

" -Well Palais Royale which is now known as Yves Delorme."

" -Uhuh."

" -They have a store in Charleston and they helped me with the beds."

" -Yeah but now, the choice is here though that everything is very muted. It blends it with the color on the walls."

" -Very calm and soothing."

" -So you're not trying to pull any tricks to make any?"

" -Conducive to quiet."

" -Yes. I like that. I like that. And the bathroom, the theme kind of continues through with the Mexican lime stone tiles. And the color fixtures in this color, it's called sand bar and the lime stone tiles continue in the shower and around the lavatory. I really like the black monecian pattern on the accent tiles. They compliment this beautiful granite countertop perfectly. Very nice."

Tour of the Port Royal Parlor at Winterthur
Tour of the Port Royal Parlor at Winterthur

Bob returns to Winterthur, industrialist Henry Francis du Pont's country estate, which is now a museum, in Delaware's Brandywine Valley. The museum's Port Royal Parlor display was originally part of a country home in Philadelphia slated for demolition in the 1920's. A collector of American antiques and architecture, du Pont bought the entire home and moved it to Winterthur. Pauline Eversmann, Winterthur's program director, joins Bob for a tour and recounts the parlor's history. The entryway opens onto the gardens, and in Colonial times, the doors would remain open to provide a view of the garden before guests proceeded to the parlor. As an area of the home intended for formal entertaining, du Pont wanted this room to be functional, so he expanded the parlor from its original size. Among the period antiques on display is an antique high chest that du Pont purchased for $44,000 in 1929, setting a long-standing price record for early American furniture.

The Dominy Workshop at Winterthur Garden
The Dominy Workshop at Winterthur Garden

Bob takes us on the first of many visits to the Winterthur Garden and Museum in Delaware's Brandywine Valley. Winterthur was the vision of Henry Francis DuPont, who researched and collected antiques and housed them here. Greg Landry, Director of Conservation for Winterthur, takes Bob to the Dominy Workshop, which once belonged to a family of carpenters and clock makers on Long Island. The workshop-turned-museum houses a multitude of Colonial-era tools, many of which are still in use today. Bob takes a turn on the great wheel lathe, which was used to mill large items like table tops as well as other decorative items. Landry also shows Bob some hand tools, including antique saws, planes, and drills.

Review of the Interior Decorating in the Kitchen and Sunroom
Review of the Interior Decorating in the Kitchen and Sunroom

In the kitchen, a neutral paint palette allows for striking contrasts. Bob looks at the mix of stainless steel and black Kenmore Elite Energy Star appliances, the Wellborn cabinets, and Curtis' choice of decorative antiques. In the informal dining area, Vila and Curtis focus on a reproduction wicker table set based on a Haywood-Wakefield design. In the sunroom, the furniture is a Bar Harbor-style wicker, which was introduced in the early twentieth century in Bar Harbor, Maine. These pieces were custom made by Curtis Designs of Los Angeles and feature a French fabric design from the SPNEA collection.

Touring Vizcaya in Miami
Touring Vizcaya in Miami

Bob visits Vizcaya, a remarkable Italian Renaissance-style "palace" with formal gardens situated in Miami. Industrialist James Deering spent an amazing $20 million between 1914 and 1916 on Vizcaya. Doris Littlefield, the head curator, gives Bob a tour of the villa. Starting in the East Loge room facing Biscayne Bay. The houses seventy rooms are designed around a center courtyard. Many of the homes architectural pieces were antiques imported from Italy. The estates grounds, originally 180 acres, are now composed of 12 acres of gardens, some formal with 17th century sculptures.
