" Well Peter and I rented half of these this duplex for five years and after about we're about to floor foreclosure and first thing we wanted to do was to turn the third floor which was divided -- security started. Turn into one big open space. So as you can see there's a lot of work that's -- only to be done to make it one big open space all the walls have to remove the ceiling has to be removed all the molding. The plumbing all the doors and jambs have to be removed. We're moving this wall to make a double wide staircase. In here. We have that structural lumber to all of these to support the ceiling from -- the walls to make sure that structurally sound and we also have to remove the old knob and tube wiring. As well as from in the old gas fixtures. So."

" Peter -- I see demolition has gotten -- today's the demolition -- right this is gonna have a lot of friends and neighbors come over. That's good I'm glad to see you've got professionals to come in and remove beat the old gas piping and the electrical. Connections that were still up here. Did you choose this that was the fact that it was area. OK well let's get started with a demo I think somebody's already made a bit of a Denton. And the key thing I think is to always take off the plaster first. And then when you got all the plaster out the door and into the dumpster gets started on the -- which you can bundle and you can. Put in you know separately. The cooperative Spirit of the elmwood neighborhood really comes through. A group of Brent and Peter's fellow homeowners pitch in to make quick work of removing all the plaster. The group effort also takes care of the lath in no time. Then it's all bundled up and taken to the dumpster. With demolition complete Douglas lumber of Smithfield Rhode Island delivers a shipment of engineered lumber for the roof restructuring. A crane is really the only way to lift these large items into the third floor. Steve Gascon and the rest of the crew from nation wide home improvement. Unload the lumber into the attic. Now let's get together with Bob Ryley and start reframing this roof."

" What the plaster gone and the walls all down the place really opens up a -- got to keep the Senate petition. Pulled up his cock collar ties and I'm without -- Deluca. Bob nation my home improvement right now good -- This is -- called in to companies don't put this -- class system back again next. And what is it that we isn't it LVL's that yes we use an LVLs which is laminated veneer lumber from International Paper it's. Much stronger than traditional dimensional lumber it is now how do you determine. That this is the appropriate size for what we're using here because I know that accounts smaller and also come to. And whiter where its yep this is submitted from. The actual plans to the -- got blown up -- International Paper. -- and they'll their engineers will design. I sides are far -- and that's just the first step of going through right here is actually step one right after the demolition OK and then the next thing I think if it was. But that the college -- I got to the next step they can't."

" Well all the engineered wood is in place sistering up to the old rafters but we mustn't forget the Georgia Pacific dimensional lumber. Which is being used here to create these collar ties that go all the way across the span. And they're bolted through its rilya a dollar that's blocked every four feeder so. But these are really the strength of the structure now that we've taken out all the support walls and the other interesting thing to note is that now we're looking at a space that's almost fifty by 36. It's almost a basketball court in here."

" There -- a Foreman for for a nationwide construction now what are you putting in over here thoughts."

" Paul finally your hard work done over here Bob it's we'll leave it -- else. Now comes the easy formal wear and openly -- now why do you need -- while it's not structural at this point -- structural just to give him a straight wall is gonna finish off a closet here. Okay. So this has been prefab."

" That'll also give us tonight of the glaze and insulate. Now Steve the plywood ends right here is is there what's the plan for this area was going to be another walked off their petition put up with a small Lawrence they have authority so we'll create the traditional space for storing the suitcases packed gut. Now the other thing the homeowners wanted to accomplish here was to create a big window opening on the gable end on the front facing the street but. The historic review did not pass and so what they've done is they've created a rather. Kept the two openings as they were in the two family situation but we're replacing the windows that -- there was some brand new Pella units. OK so the the opening has been fur it out with plywood and two -- now we're just applying a caulking. -- And the replacement window will be ready to go and this is -- Pella unit which is it. As close as it gets to looking like the original double hung. Six over one sash there were used to when the house was new."

Review of the Attic Conversion Plans
Review of the Attic Conversion Plans

Bob meets up with structural engineer Steve Siegel on the Medford's home third floor. The attic is right from the 1880's and clearly no longer meets code. As the homeowner intends to create a home office up there with cathedral ceilings, structural changes will be required. Steve explains that the existing structure is undersized and will need to be reinforced. The 2 x 6 rafters are pretty widely spaced at 2 feet on center with flimsy 2 x 3 collar ties. To create useable living space Steve suggests taking out the existing collars and putting in a ridge beam to support the whole load of the roof. To do this Siegel would put a piece of wood (possibly a 2 x 6) at every rafter pair and then position the ridge beam just below. However, this configuration might conflict with the architect's plan to fill the whole gable end with a big glass triangle.
