" And we're back at the other end of the recreation room now and remember this is almost a sixty foot space. And we've just completed putting in the Odeo roof window this is not a roof window that has a wood -- and one of the great things about it is it comes with a lifetime warranty. The glass is double insulated glass seven eighths inch thick. Inside is argon gas on the outside is tempered glass on the inside it's low. And what I really like about this particular windows it comes with a groove on the inside to that you can fit the drywall right into it you get a very clean finish but now let's look at another interesting product. Call pat -- Good morning the size -- is a wall system that's called highlight right correct correct it's -- highlight quote walkway. Acrylic panels and for all the world it looks like glass floor. But it becomes almost protective bubble -- going to take some of this home for the kids -- but the the look of it is really terrific. You have been real successful with that we have different patterns we have what we call a wave pattern -- we have other colors as well yeah. As so you can get it clear you can get it to look like real glass block right exactly like it but it's not totally transparent does this is after all the partition between. Aid powder room half bathroom exactly it up here. Exactly we have we have another one too. After you want more obscurity we have a frosted one puts on one half of the block is frosted under the panels come in four by eight sheets sword. There are ordered to your dimension you go ahead and call them and we we build a simple panel exactly the dimension that you're looking there was basically a custom. Product how do you install it. What we have in this case is we have a flat cap a base to -- that will install aluminum. Yes correct and you did you put that down in the -- yes well we -- beyond cutback in this particular application we cut it into eight inch pieces and we're following a radius were put in individual panels. Interest. Pieces that form the radius are all these all these individual one wide panels. So called panels are basically all attached together using the same aluminum. Plates right that's it's a tram that we have to finish off the panels that we also can use it for installing panels together okay. So the plumbing in the half bath has already been cut into the floor area toilet in the lavatory at the other end now let's talk to Bob small from my plumber who's. Doing the work here there's a lot of lot of cutting and a lot of us of messing around in order to get a little bathroom on the third floor like this isn't about listeners -- so we've got the -- PVC. Connections this is the waste from the new bathroom into the existing pipe and then of course. Our vent. Connects to the old cast iron vent that we've left in place and what are you up to over here. Over here on this thing hot and cold water supply the bathroom in the kitchen sink little -- okay. The high lite acrylic wall is complete we'll just have to tied into the ceiling later."

" Israel is here from cold minister is it called masters temperature control so you're HVC experts and you're gonna help us. Cool down in the summertime what is a volume of probably. Which huge appeared that who went to a four tons of of -- that's a lot of cool that's sixteen. Hundred cubic feet per minute what does that translate to in BTUs 40048012. So when we talked about. Putting a C units into a big loft open space like this how do you --"

" Well we had to. Come up with a way to -- you some of the existing system so we're putting what's called area Hydro air system which is using the existing boiler. And we have an air handler. But there that's that thing up an animal -- won't that that's big won't that make a racket up there well we designed the equipment. To. Use only. 800 feet per minute and that'll be quiet -- guys are finishing hanging the unit right now doesn't say anywhere up the support to hear when hanging the unit from the front rafters up there right we've hung it actually I Slater's -- so that not to transmit vibrations of the buildings as -- we are moving a lot of air here. OK that. The series works in conjunction with the boiler for -- heat and then there's a direct expansion coil. Which will be put in there right in line -- that and that works in conjunction with the outdoor condenser."

" Which is how you're gonna get the cool air correct to remove the heat you're using freon that's correct. And it that way that works is that you're circulating the freon and absorbing the heat from the space appear right -- taking the freon to the outside to the outside and dissipating it dissipating it right condenser. Right all right well thanks Myron and of course all that cool air we just go right up through the roof unless we have a real good insulation job and that's what we're doing here is our thirty. Fiberglass bats from Owens Corning."

Running HVAC Ductwork in a New Colonial
Running HVAC Ductwork in a New Colonial

Bob meets with Peter Merianos and the crew from Coastal Heating and Air Conditioning who are fabricating the AC ductwork on site. With the Kenmore air handler already installed in the attic, the crew begins assembling the ductwork using five-foot lengths of pre-crimped sheet-metal ducting as the basic material. The sections snap together and are secured with sheet-metal screws and foil tape. To add a new line off the main trunk, the crew cuts a hole into the the trunk with a special tool. A starting collar from which the new line will extend is then inserted into the hole. The ductwork is insulated using vinyl wrap, which is a one and a half-inch vinyl-coated fiberglass blanket.

Hydro-Air Heat, Partially Solar-fed Indirect Domestic Hot Water, and In-Floor Radiant
Hydro-Air Heat, Partially Solar-fed Indirect Domestic Hot Water, and In-Floor Radiant

Bob talks with Tim Cutler from TJ's Plumbing and Heating about the Viessmann boiler. The boiler is heating the domestic hot water, the radiant floor heating, and the hydro-air heating system. The hydro-air system has an air handler with a hot water coil. Warm air is dispersed throughout the building using this hydro-air system, which heats the existing, older portion of the house. Showers and hot water will be fed by a 79 gallon indirect, dual-coil, domestic hot-water tank. The bottom coil is fed by the solar heating system, which has 30 Viessmann evacuated tubes on the roof. The tubes have alcohol within them which has a low boiling point. When the alcohol in the tubes boils, it transfers the BTUs to a bulb, which transfers the heat to the lower coil for domestic hot water. A concrete cutter came in to cut an opening in the basement between the old portion of the home and the new addition. Bob talks with Bill Sloan from Viega North America about the radiant slab heating in the new addition. The radiant heating system uses PEX tubing. Viega manufactures the manifolds for this tubing and the copper tubing used to transfer hot water to the PEX tubing. ProPress joints that do not require any soldering are used for this sytem.

HVAC System for the Home Addition
HVAC System for the Home Addition

Bob meets with Mark, a heating, ventilating, and air conditioning mechanic. Bob and Mark have an in-depth discussion on why a homeowner had to add an air-conditioning unit to an existing air-conditioning unit. The new space added onto the residence was too large for the old unit to cool, so a new 1-1/2 ton unit had to be added. They also describe how the particular unit cools the home and the major components of the unit.
