Modified Hip Roof Construction

Ryley and Bob look at the Colonial's rear faade and then head inside to watch as the crew frames out the modified hip roof on the sunroom. With its flat top it will look like a tray ceiling from inside. The roof is framed with three working joists that hold serve to hold the walls together and three 2 by 12s for the ridge. Ryley explains how the hips are formed and then observes as the crew finishes up the job laying in the rest of the common rafters.

" Now Bob they're almost finished what's left to frame that I'll have got left now is just this little portion of -- house that jets out you become the sunroom that's putting it. Hip roof on the end up and it's got a little flat section on top -- a modified hip out of where the flat top right a look at it from the inside look like a tray ceiling. This -- just getting started let's go there's a closer look okay. OK so Ryley what's already happened up -- what -- these horizontal pieces of these of the joist there's only three out about -- working dressed in a hole in the Wall -- at all these are four by six's now imagine when it's finished they'll be clad in pints of they're part of the extended the finished room -- they'll -- dressed -- and we -- in -- sunroom and it's going to be sending -- this very -- on what they're doing right now -- that and put the -- classes in the first -- chance. And so this horizontal piece up there which looks to be a two by twelve. Comes out from the side -- the main body of the house stopped and at the corner here. Slopes meets -- creating. Technically a hit record right those are two that same size common rafters that are in place and the hip goes right into the car is now on the opposite side. We've got. Basically the identical structure to be put together and again. You'll. Tack it in place. I so this third piece would technically be news the ridge right yeah that's the last piece of the ridge in north flat roof it's a column read that now we can see the outline of what will be the flat roof on top -- site. And now we're ready for the corner hip rafter. Now around it. What are these doing for us -- these are the spring braces and -- dormant as to keep the wall straight. Why we're putting the roof system on then after that appreciating it. Dropping roof shingles on top bottom while that's gone on of these weren't in place. These laws be bounced back and forth that a and I took and I -- to come down until last minute that you take these down when you've done the job. All right now next next -- but here's delay in the rest of the rafters right that's right they're going to Staten just -- in with common rafters."
