Installing Interior Window Casings and Sill

In this segment, Bob Ryley tackles window trim in the master bedroom of the new Colonial. He begins with the windowsill, which is predrilled through its leading edge and then secured with 10-penny nails. The first side casing is nailed into place, leaving a 3/16-inch reveal along the window jamb. The top casing is nailed and glued to insure that the boards don't move. After the remaining side casing is hung, the bottom apron is attached. Finally, precut corner return pieces are glued onto the apron to complete the job. The entire assembly will be painted later.

Beadboard Wainscoting

To achieve a Victorian look on an interior wall, try a beadboard wainscot. You can buy beadboard at your local lumberyard. Here are some things to keep in mind when installing it yourself. Run your baseboard first to avoid forming grooves for dust to collect in. Use a drill and a jigsaw to cut holes for outlets. Fit each board together snugly, then nail with two and a half inch finish nails. Angle the bottom nail into the tongue of each board. Face nail the top, and cap it with a molding over the rough edges.

Larry Ratliff from Convenience Products joins energy expert Steve Easley to talk about strategies to fill the 1000s of tiny gaps around windows and doors in the average home. Touch 'n Foam products are expanding polyurethane foam sealants developed to fill and seal holes, cracks and gaps that can be major sources of air leakage in and around the home. Unlike caulking materials and other sealants that are solid, heavy and non-insulating, Touch 'n Foam products expand to completely fill these voids and provide the most effective barrier available against energy loss.
