Hand Crafting Reproduction Moldings

On location at the project house, Robert Adam from the North Bennet Street School demonstrates the tools and techniques used to handcraft reproduction moldings. Using a millwork profile found in the Winslow Crocker House, Adam uses a selection of antique hand tools to recreate the molding using century-old techniques.

" Election moldings we've got several samples here. Are any molding where the center profile or a middle profile is higher than the ends and this is a good example of that but we're making one that's inspired. By a colonial house known as the Winslow Crocker house right and we basically said to you copy this using hand tools yes so how do you go about doing it."

" Well I'm pretty much the same way as it was done traditionally we were replaced the plow plane. With using a a table target date overhead wooden plug groups now what. But this is sort of how the piece begins as just a rectangular section in the end we draw the profile on here. And then it gets plowed in different stations different stages it gets give some grooves plowed -- like. And then it gets also beveled off to reduce most of the wage which is at this point here at this point here in this is really where we start and on each end we take and Trace. The actual profile but that these wafers are what we use. To replicate it we keep a sample of these we have have to make another piece sure. Now which. Planes will you be using for this well we're gonna be using three planes and these these two planes are modified hollows and rounds. And hollows and rounds are as the name implies that -- will cut either a hollow plane cuts a round shape on a round plane will cut a -- or create what we've done is with we have. Added some fences to these that give us a depth stop. And we'll stop on. What will be our our fillets that we've plowed in here moments aren't flat part of a plot costs from its restaurants in this one what was wounded and this one puts a little thumb nail molding on the it is just on the very edge there and that's the same kind of molding that is on the fielded panel. Wall here as well -- proceed we want to watch."

" So you want to make one full pass each time. -- yes thanks. The procedure. Code. Necessary to do better all the time because these planes have stopped. -- All right so now you have to switch planes right that's right we're taking the thumb nail plane. And we're reducing the other side. If there right. And this -- then reduce the fillets that it will give an accurate cut with this plane when we go back. They'll be actually several passes it will take. Continue to each time finding it sometimes the grain changes a little and the fewer cuts you take of like cuts you take. Better the finish will be. And turn the piece around with the work off the other edge with this fence. With this plane that also has a fence around."

" As a skew angle plane when used to reduce the fillets here down to our lines. So that we can finish up. Our moldings for the -- come to the right profile."

" OK and once the pencil marks are gone I guess you've done right. Yes have to pencil mark half that thanks done."

Replicating Old Bay Window Moldings and Replacing Them
Replicating Old Bay Window Moldings and Replacing Them

Bob explains that the house being remodeled was built in 1921 and has never had a real facelift on the exterior. As a consequence, the home's trim, porch ceiling, decking, and windows were all in need of repair. Bob points out the oriel window's exterior frame that has allowed cold air into the home. To fix this problem, local carpenters were called in to tear it apart, insulate, and restructure it. Forester Molding & Lumber was then brought in to replace the 85-year-old trim. Bill Hopkins from Forester Molding & Lumber reviews how old house moldings cannot be found in lumberyards and must be replicated. Hopkins uses a needle gauge to trace the profile of the trim. The needle gauge is then placed on a piece of graph paper and traced. The profile is then used to search for available matches in the Forester catalog. If there is no match, the trim is scanned into the computer and a specialized knife is cut. The knife is then used in the machine to rip the molding.

Dress up the rooms in your house with a variety of custom moldings. These moldings are available in many historic profiles. You can add a one piece baseboard molding for a 19th century look. Poplar chair rails and picture moldings add detail and take paint well. And for a more elegant look add a multi-piece crown molding to the ceiling.

Crown Molding Installation
Crown Molding Installation

Steve Roth from Style Solutions shows Bob the crown molding being used in the Modular Mountain Retreat project house. The EPS (extruded polystyrene) moldings are easier to install than traditional wood offerings as they are a generally a single piece. (Ornate wood crown molding is often comprised of multiple profiles joined together.) The EPS moldings are comparable in cost to wood and can be screwed and glued to the wall and each other like wood. But unlike wood homeowners can generally order preformed corners instead of having to miter them on site reducing the time and expertise needed to complete the installation.
