Lyman Estate Tour

Interior Designer Leslie Curtis takes Bob on a tour of the Lyman Estate in Waltham, Mass. Curtis has chosen many items for the house from The Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (SPNEA) licensing program. Carol Bruce from SPNEA joins them to talk about the furniture selections that will be used in the project house. Among the pieces is a demi-lune table for the foyer, chosen for it's light weight and dark, earth tones. Curtis and Bruce also show Bob the leather bound, wing-back chair for the great room, as well as a tufted leather chair that will be used in the study. For the master bedroom, Leslie has chosen a federal-style high post bed, and Bruce shows them an authentic reproduction from the 1800's. Also on display is an original 18th century high chest, as well as a reproduction of an original mahogany dresser.

" Leslie Curtis and I went to Waltham Massachusetts to tour the Lyman estate built by a wealthy nineteenth century merchant it's had several renovations over the years and is now a popular place for weddings and events. What's wonderful about this house I think is all this colonial revival detailing that's throughout -- in the hall here."

" It's magnificent detail that we are actually here to meet Carol Bruce from the society for the preservation of New England antiquities Bob Vila how how are you actually going to tell us about the furniture that the society's involved in licensing some of the antiques they own right."

" Yes we have a licensing program it's the Historic New England collection. We have about 25 manufacturers. Doing a variety of things in here today to talk about some furniture. Great now -- this piece that you plan on using in our project this is a case for going to use and our project I think it's. Usable for our purposes because of its size and the decorative painting which incorporates some of the collars as does the -- living down here little further along. They are using an article or what went period is this. This is early nineteenth century when it's not. It is an angry very versatile and can find its way in -- room of the house gets us our beachfront hand painted with some have amassed dozens."

" Yes so that looks that is sort of neo classical and you send immune tables jamming them table is French for half moon which I guess refers to -- the shape about it. And then it's like a half round here. Now why did you choose this table birth."

" And for our project we chose this table. For a number of reasons one of which is that the sizes so usable in the foyer which we have to furnish and the colors we're using greens soft greens. Ages some earth colors because of the woods and."

" As you know we conceive mosque when the original antique would have been black lacquer with what they call Chinese -- action auction was really yes."

" Finding comfortable furniture for our house Carol has been a little bit of a problem with the SP NEA collection of accurate historical reproductions we have found a perfect wing chair. The -- time lines are very graceful. And they look wonderful in the great room I honestly don't think it looks that comfortable but -- yes it can determine."

" Yet not yet know it's very good for your posture definitely absolutely who was short here but there's an accurate reproduction of an historic chair."

" It gives the original was made imports just. And awesome designs of tourist couple like these famous English designer."

" OK and so you've got beautifully turned wooden legs and is it leather yeah you've got a leather on the sides and on the back -- this is contemporary edition."

" In other words this is to appeal to our our clientele today OK and where do you think you use this at our house I think we -- in the great. Terrific we had a pair apparent yeah."

" He would let the ship's model."

" Perhaps all of us any Israel treasures this is a bottle of Theodore -- and shipped to alert. He was actually a sea merchant and made his fortune and that way. -- should take just aren't right we're particularly proud of the fact that the brass castings on the alert the original were made in Paul Revere shocked."

" Excellent. Now we have a tough did leather chair over here yes we do is part of -- collection also this is part of a collection."

" It's called a common chair it comes with a not a -- it's extraordinarily comfortable. The design comes. From the nineteenth century from the French who were emphasizing comfort and Americans. In the nineteenth century started to be interested and I'll take elegance and comfort. Larry that you can -- it right here it's deep it's low it's plush."

" I think we'll put this in your study -- not my study by the aren't the study yeah very nice."

" This originally yeah America has made about the 1800. And it's a federal high post -- original which is on -- in SP NEA Harrison gray Otis house springbok."

" are very famous house yeah solid this is hand carved isn't it -- didn't. Really exhibits all of the town very authentic yeah when this comes up is that means they would have put stretchers across the top here and they could -- What do you call paints right --"

" I don't -- hangings absolutely and this bed is perfect for our house because we have a very spacious high ceilinged master -- I'm impressed with the quality of this carving this is not machine carved -- in color."

" Hand carved that's got to reinvest -- and licensed with south of furniture to do our reproduction line because we're so thrilled with -- quality. From the reading to the flirting. For the turned rings yeah even a little brass -- to hide the boat where everything goes together and the strength LA it's really a work of art."

" Nice work and it's available in a modern day size."

" These kids weren't things we did stop and espionage work together to adapt the original it's pleasant double supplies into a queen size for today's lifestyle -- also in doing that adaptation we designed a federal style crested headboard. And did the carving on the rear posts. -- not familiar with four post beds in the period the headboard would have been very plain and the back post not carved yeah 'cause of those -- his."

" As the bed hangings they love her lesbian front you can see it now closely when you make a choice like this in in doing an interior design. Is an important to have the right size room."

" Absolutely and we do we have a lovely lovely spacious room with high ceilings and we can accommodate. A very tall bed as well as a bed of substance like this and we have certainly a lot of space Carol is this also a reproduction or is it a genuine antique."

" This is original to the house this is a wonderful high chest. And it has it's a chest on chest just -- just sits on the bottom chest exactly. It's from Philadelphia with flame finials are very characteristic of the Philadelphia style -- about 1770."

" show on the drawer front. Look at that is that nice. So this is enough that it eighteenth century piece method mixed in in the same room with reproductions what about the the Dresser over in the corner."

" This both bow front Dresser we are going to use my bedroom we have plenty of room for this and perhaps a smaller version. It's solid mahogany with mahogany veneers when intelligently is to bring."

" New piece of furniture but what's the origin -- us -- the originals and Portsmouth, New Hampshire."

" Where they made truly gorgeous furniture."

" In the last quarter of the eighteenth century yes all the wealthy sea captains brought in very elaborate furnishings -- elaborate veneers and the detail showed the owners' position in social circles."

" And there's other detailing that we see here at the -- state. Such as the glass that -- display it which is also not old it's reproduction right."

" Reproduction colored glass all hand blown it's made in the same methods that you just -- point in the time that you're quite right and check out in Massachusetts."
