Pella Window Installation

Bob meets with Brian Kaley and Tim McFadden from Pella Windows to discuss the new fenestration that will be employed in the waterfront warehouse rehab project. Pella will be supplying windows that are architecturally similar to what was used in the original structure, a six-over-six-pane double-hung design. McFadden points out that the new windows are complete tear out and replacement models. The new windows have a 3-1/2-inch bottom rail that mimics the architectural style of the period. Pella's Kaley, on site to supervise the window installation, points out that the windows need a clean slate for installation. This requires the removal of the old window framing all the way down to the masonry. To secure the new window, the crew from Dino's Construction builds a wooden frame with 2-by-6 framing stock. With the window dry fit into place, Bob discusses the proper methods of insulating the gaps between the frame and the masonry.

" I don't who worked. You know general contract just to get our eye protection out is demolishing the window surround them. And we've got Brian -- here in the end Tim McMahon from Pella. We're going to talk a little bit about the features of the window Tim this is a replacement window that's been custom made forthright. Actually no Bob this staples out -- it is yeah that we'll carry out commercial double hung. -- amendment that was just beautiful there. Well it's basically included the train -- I exterior casing right we have an exterior sub so okay. And what we liked about it is that it has that six over six format. That goes with the architectural style of Iraq and 184840s. City building right if you look at the bottom rail we have a three and a half inch bottom rail --"

" Mimics the hour the historic of the the window right it's back but it still hasn't been told by -- for the money disseminate bar with a narrow check rails well right now Brian."

" You're here."

" Here to advise on the installation I guess it's not easy -- Which fell into these old openings right what's the first thing these guys have to do basically is just -- the existing window completely stop frame at all. -- write -- of the existing missionary opening OK and that's a point on the make a box to fit within -- missionary opening and that box would be with that it you might get too yes -- with material framing stuff inexpensive. Box that you see here write about is basically structural just to get it into the existing masonry opening and I want to take measurements on the box to keep the center of the window. And give it two jacks on the side."

" And these are just blocks to space and out the right."

" And -- Jack studs then right. Yes. It. And looks good already now Brian what's that what's that the key here and in terms of the final installation well actually you have this. Just checking to see if it's properly which it is we have books and masonry or clips to. Applied to the inside jam of the window outside jam of the window -- wrap around for him. And as long as your. Framed opening is plumb and true you have to worry too much about what's going to happen with the window. Exactly up. But we saw the shim at certain locations we get our shim shingles ready. Some. All right that before we do any kind of fastening we'll just check to make sure the windows plumbing. -- You. All right. And so now though once that's done we can. Bend over the straps and they're pliable enough that you can just bend them I had six. And fasten into the -- opens another window comes as a package with the trim all ready for the exterior right yes actually -- he. Casings and it's almost casing for the exterior loose because -- dealing with -- that existing. That was at a plumbing at a square right we really needed to cut that on site yeah and I know when you when you're talking masonry to. The different -- yes. Now should we -- insulation in the spaces there yes. I doubt once we get the casing on and so forth before we close up the the insights into -- felt all the voids with some insulation and even in the real tight. That's -- voids yes absolutely hours like. Push it in there with a shim shingles and -- is that."

Installing Cherry Cabinets
Installing Cherry Cabinets

Tim Berky is installing the Merillat cherry cabinets in the remodeled kitchen in Rowley, Massachusetts. Bob remarks that redoing the floors and bringing them to level makes the installation much easier. Berky adds that the new cabinets will be level to within 1/8 inch. Bob reviews the cabinet features, including the track system and compression closing device that prevents pinched fingers. The drawers are dovetailed wood with solid cherry faces. The cabinet boxes are pressboard that is gusseted for strength at the corners. Berky is installing the base wall cabinets with cabinet screws that have a broader head for a better hold. He has premarked all of the studs before drilling so that he will get a solid seat for the screws. Berky roughs in the cabinet, shims it, checks for level, then screws the cabinet into the wall and through the adjoining face frame before trimming off the shim. Berky finishes the installation by dressing out the toe kick with a cherry-stained board that he glues and nails in place. Bob looks at the glass-front upper cabinets and the island that is made to look like an Italian-style table with floating legs and rails. Berky secures the legs to the floor to avoid movement or damage.

Hanging Cabinets
Hanging Cabinets

Here are some things to think about when you're hanging your own kitchen cabinets. Hang your upper cabinets first, so the lower cabinets won't be in the way. Snap a level chalk line to align the countertops. Use shim shingles to level them, then use drywall screws to secure your cabinets to the wall studs.

Kitchen Cabinet Installation
Kitchen Cabinet Installation

Bob meets with Charlie who has all the cabinets in place except for a final one that will go on one side of the new Thermador range. Charlie explains that when installing the cabinets Jimmy first determines the high point in the floor since old houses tend to be out of level. Then he draws a level line across the wall from the high point and shims the cabinets up so that the tops correspond with the level line. The shims will later be hidden by a toekick. Then he installs the cabinets centering the sink base on the wall and working his way across. The cabinets are fastened together with the doors off by driving screws through from one stile to the next. The doors are put on after the cabinets are installed. Next Charlie and Bob work on installing the final cabinet, checking for plum and level and shimming where necessary. Charlie drills a hole through the back of the cabinet and into a stud and drives a screw in to secure it in place.

Installing French Doors
Installing French Doors

Tim Berky has the rough opening prepared for the installation of the inswinging French doors. The doors come with temporary handles for installation that will be removed as the assembly is set in place. These Pella French doors have a triple-latch system that latches at the top, middle, and bottom for additional security. The door set with handles and locks is made of oil-rubbed bronze to combat the damaging effects of salt air.
