Elm Court Foyer and Fireplace

Bob Vila greets Sonya Berle who shows off the large foyer and explains how she and her husband started with small restorations in New Orleans before beginning their grand plans for Elm Court, which sat vacant for half a century. The fireplace in the foyer has a mantle made of carved Brownstone and is so large visitors can sit on its interior benches and toast marshmallows. The large andirons were original to the house. The home was heavily vandalized prior to the Berles restoration efforts. One of the reasons for the vandalization was treasure hunters believing there was hidden wealth inside the walls of this grand Vanderbilt-Sloane cottage.

" Bob liked -- my wife -- yes hello. Well hi Bob how are you. Wonderful instances thank you thank you. Boy what a front hall you've got how fast -- same thing yes it's now Sonya I've got to ask a question how do I mean you're so both of your so yeah. How do you get into home renovation at this scale when you're somebody practically twenty."

" This congressional understand some levels I think it's so hard wired into both of us there I'm it is the preservation of land and of houses is not very important to us again and now we really enjoy the aspects of a hands on learning as well as. The academic approach for research and -- to sort of tell me this really interest me."

" You started out your marriage in New Orleans right we did some we have need. We're trying to purchase some of the worst looking houses that you could find if you listen to some people yes. What we found some great properties that were awfully down on a lot can be -- apartments condemned. And we just had a great time working together in solving the problems that. Each house presented the OK that's that was the start and so here the tour you are working on something that really has meaning. Let's look at some of the features -- front -- really it's extraordinary. The fireplace would you tell us about deficits."

" Well I love the style. The overall style lumped into these very beautiful delicate birds the period we have a fig tree. And it's very interesting because the material used to construct this is brownstone that young usually an exterior building material well there's a fireplace that you could have interior and an exterior. It's just such assurances from an enormous and we can't -- sitting here it's just it's so comforting we actually toast marshmallows here a lot I've been junior he would local if they do."

" Diesel look like they've been here forever. Yes and he -- and the -- these are original to the house so some things were preserved or saved they were. When me vandalism first started my grandparents did move some things into their house. And my mother. As worked awfully hard and and other members in the family to bring things back to the house. And that's really been great and have the original yeah yeah things very very important. And of course this which is eight feet by maybe five or six feet by a good four and half feet deep. Wouldn't probably draw very well without that massive iron backboard."

" That's good that's the key in the fireplace Brooke has those beautiful rococo scrolls on the back and so it's also very."

" Very nice to look at him so I'd say this hall is maybe. 35. Feet by about 25 feet some -- yes in excellent condition was this room."

" Well all the glass side had been broken out there were boards on all of the windows. Of the floors were just filled with degree. The wood the paneling had been. -- knocked out just just some senseless vandalism."

" Senseless vandalism are there any photographs of the interiors. We do have some great pictures I hope not great pictures. Have pictures adopt any significant -- but they clearly give you an idea what it was like and the ceilings. I mean these are massive. Coffered ceilings have really beautiful to look at what kind of shape for the area. They were actually. Out of reach in some ways we think."

" From some of the vandalism just because they're higher they certainly didn't sustain the damage stick. A lot of the -- some -- the spindles in the stairwell and the doors did the why do you suppose they knocked the panels -- We think they were treasure hunting they were all the stories. Not only locally but throughout New England that the house was haunted that. Somebody had put money in the wall driven all the things that happen when houses are. I left --"

Direct Vent Fireplaces for Heat and Ambience

Bob visits a Heat n' Glo showroom where Ross Morrison shows him a variety of direct-vent gas fireplaces. With a sealed glass chamber there is no interplay of of room airno products of combustion will get into the room and it doesn't use any of the the room's already warm air for combustion. The fireplace inserts come with ceramic fiber logs. When the flames hit the logs they produce a nice glow. The logs are light, unbreakable, and last a lifetime. Ross shows Bob the 6000 TRXI, a premium model that is rated as a furnace. It has a beautiful masonry appearance inside and a pumps out enough BTUs to heat a 1200 - 1500 sq. ft. house. The fireplace also offers the option of turning the flames down or off or opening the climate control damper to cut the heat by one half.

Putting in a New Fireplace
Putting in a New Fireplace

The walls in the new addition to the home are just about ready for paint. The new fireplace will make this new in-law suite very cozy. Malcolm Gurney of The Fireplace Connection reviews features of the fireplace. It is a Majestic wood-burning fireplace that uses outside air for combustion. It operates like a standard wood stove with the doors closed while the fire is burning. Measurements for the fireplace were taken prior to installation, allowing for a six foot mantle. The pipe needs to be installed in-line with the peak of the roof. Thirty-degree offsets, the steepest degree available, will be used to install the pipe. A multiple number of offsets can be used in the installation. The fireplaces come with installation manuals to explain the process.

Count Rumford Fireplace
Count Rumford Fireplace

Fireplaces are a nice feature in any home. Count Rumford fireplaces, known for their heat efficiency, are tall and shallow, reflecting heat back into the room. Constructed from firebricks and refractory mortar, they will tolerate very high temperatures. The distinctive throat connecting the firebox to the flue wastes less heated room air.

Building a Rumford Fireplace
Building a Rumford Fireplace

The Rumford fireplace is being built and Bob reviews the herringbone construction process being used. The Rumford fireplace uses a design which is approximately 200 years old. The fireplace is tall and shallow to reflect a lot of heat and has a streamlined throat between the firebox and the flue. Heat Stop Refractory Mortar is used to withstand the high temperatures generated in the firebox. This mortar conforms to building codes. Bob then reviews the construction elements of the fireplace.
