An Affordable Exterior Paint Job

Bob is at the Mashpee site with Joann Borges of CertaPro Painters, a national painting company with 220 franchises throughout North America. She explains that their size, ability to use the latest technology, and their access to the newest products makes them a very affordable option for residential paint jobs. The house is taped and caulked in preparation for the paint job. Borges explains that a really good caulk has an expansion rate of 50 percent, meaning it will be able to expand and contract at the same rate as the wood and joints. A good caulk will make for a weather-tight seal. The painters then use a sprayer to apply the paint in slow, even strokes. This is not only fast but provides good coverage, especially with the Duration paint they are using from Sherwin Williams. This paint is twice as thick as regular latex house paint, so CertaPro's painters can give two-coat coverage in just one coat. This cuts down on time and labor, bringing savings to the customer. Certa Pro guarantees their work for two years and Sherwin Williams warranties any Duration paint job for as long as the homeowner owns the home. This is an affordable paint job that is meant to last, saving money up front and for the life of the home.

" We are whipped dog Joanne boards different certapro painters and this is national coast to coast franchise cleaning company right that's correct we have over 200 Tony locations in North America and one of the interesting things here is we're trying to build affordable houses and sometimes there's strength in numbers yet exactly and then big strength that we have -- salary able to adapt to a lot of new products lot of technology."

" allows us to do projects such disastrous. Affordable price --"

" Okay let's talk first -- we already got this beautifully painted here and they only started a little while ago yeah let's talk about some of the important things that you want with. A new paint job prep -- says one of the most important parts of paint job what have they done here."

" The prep basically saws into a couple different procedures the first thing that I don't want to do -- let me get to the house are gonna mask everything not. They're gonna start with the cock and filling in the -- calls now this particular house did come preprimed but we do have to spot prime the couple aren't."

" Yes now this house has been beautifully framed and it's very tight to the weather him. But when you're looking at an older house is very important that you don't have cold air infiltration through cracks between the siding and the water table -- the window casings what kind of caulking compounds the news."

" Well basically at -- at this point there's three types on my case you're gonna see basically a 35 air forty by the air and a lifetime. Sorry it ever really mean the reality is exactly and the reality is they're all lifetime with the most important thing that you want to consider is the expansionary from the one that we've chosen to use on this product is Sherwin williams' best cock and and that has an expansion rate of 50% so what's gonna happen is those cracks that you are referring to and the different climate changes. Those cracks will expand or contract up to about 50% of their size of this content being able to put that will expand with -- NASDAQ at variance for help keep its. Perhaps very important. They're spreading the whole thing. Yes that while they using -- act on and there's a couple of manages to using a spray act the first is the most obvious and it is quite a time saver. Does allow them to save some time on that integrated -- using a sprayer is that it does also offer very nice even coverage which you can stack to see on the pounds now. So I think Jesus. Slow even strokes and a uniform distance from. And I -- right that's that's correct yes we want to make sure that we keep everything slow recently he's been a great distance from. Some siding clapboards. That we get a nice uniform coverage Alex. This. Now obviously he's overspray onto our trim boards but. Yeah what will happen is they'll come in and he'll get all me clapboards. Sprayed out with the finish does and then we'll give this time to -- Once the front clapboards have -- the -- come back. And -- out the action -- rushes out. Are all the paint products that are being used latex debates than are found for this particular project media are using the duration product. Which isn't sure why you restoration and the great advantage to a product like duration and there's many duration is about twice as thick as a regular exterior house paint so what that allows is -- allows you to go out and actually do like to coat coverage -- which is -- give you better coverage on the house and -- hasn't -- SMS. It's also -- you have to -- your house the last black --"

" What about the cost of having house ended right."

" A company like yours well it actually allows for huge cost savings because the reason why certapro recommends duration and uses it quite often. Is because where able to come in and give a homeowner a quality paint job black half the cost of the second coat because we can give them the same cost but we save the money on labor because we only have a guys putting on one coast. And they're still getting two coat paint job and is there a warranty on the paint job. There is certapro offers a two year warranty on all of their residential wired and duration is also warranty by Sherwin-Williams against. Peeling and blistering for as long as you own your home."

" Well that's a tough -- warranty they give does that mean so often you can't control of moisture that's inside the house is trying to get out that scratches of course what causes the blistering and the paint failure fast track."

" That is that is typical of congress Sharon -- that technology -- and -- in the process. -- feels pretty confident in the product and is able to provide that warranty of the homeowners."

" So -- a typical oh. Here now 1500 square foot house like -- good Bob -- job and get it all done about a day and a half."

" Yes typically a job like best we they had it scheduled for probably about two days but you're right -- would have everything of these -- and a half to two full days that's fabulous I like the color to thank you Barack meanwhile found."

Winterize Your Home
Winterize Your Home

Here's another great tip from BobVila.com. While you were having fun in the sun this summer, it was no vacation for your house. Sun, wind and rain can cause as much wear and tear as snow and ice. A fall checklist will tip you off to some problems before they become nasty mid-winter surprises. Check your house from top to bottom. Start by inspecting the roof with binoculars: Are your shingles worn or failing? Check the attic for signs of leaks around the skylights or vents, chimneys, and have your chimney cleaned once a year. Clear out your gutters and check for leaks there, too. Drain your outside hose spigots if you live where pipes can freeze. Switch your screens for storm windows, and seal any drafty windows and doors. The same goes for paint and siding: make sure you caulk or repair those gaps around windows, doors, trim and vents, and replace any siding that is failing. In the basement, check for dampness on the floor and walls, test your sump pump, flush your water heater and check for any signs of leakage. Clean your dryer vent regularly. Make sure that paints or any flammable materials are stored away from heat sources in a closed metal cabinet. And make that appointment to have your heating system serviced yearly. Do the top-to-bottom check this fall, and you ll avoid expensive surprises this winter! Find out more at BobVila.com: The ultimate home improvement web site! BobVila.com 2008

Exterior Paint Prep
Exterior Paint Prep

Before starting an exterior paint job, make sure to sand the surface and remove peeling paint. Next wash the surface to remove dirt, power washing if necessary. Patch small cracks and seams with caulk, and check for proper ventilation. Finally, add primer to any bare wood.

Flawless Finish
Flawless Finish

For a great finish on your painting projects, start by preparing the surface the right way. First, counter-sink any finish nails. Then fill all holes and imperfections with a fast drying wood fill. Caulk and smooth all cracks and seams. Sand the surface smooth with fine sandpaper, and seal any knots with a clear shellac to prevent resins from bleeding through your finish paint.

Soundproofing
Soundproofing

Here's another great tip from BobVila.com. Even if you live in a quiet neighborhood, laundry and dishwashers, hair dryers and even showers can make your house a noisy place. If you work at home, you know how important a quiet environment is especially when the kids are enjoying that fabulous new home theater. So, what s the best way to keep sound from going where you don t want it? You can absorb it, block it, break it or isolate it. Absorption dampens sound waves by converting them into weaker energy. Fiberglass batt insulation inside interior partitions actually converts sound to heat. Carpets, upholstered furniture and acoustical ceilings also help with sound absorption in large open areas. Blocking sound requires a barrier with enough mass to stop the air movement caused by airborne sound waves. you can block noise by using acoustical caulk in all gaps, double drywall, concrete walls or even lead sheeting. Breaking the path of the sound means removing the point of contact between the inside and outside so sound doesn t reverberate through the structure. Acoustic wall studs or a layer of foam under flooring allow the inner surface to float and isolate the noise. Even if you re not building a recording studio in your garage, there are lots of reasons to make noise control part of your next remodel.
