" OK so here we are on the backside of the house where all the action is happening. And we have added on this little bump this so very small addition last week give you are watching we were installing our French doors right here. And we've -- most of the demolition inside before we go side to look at the space let's talk with Tim murkier contractor can I interrupt you for a second -- Explain to me this right now if you look at the way you're trimming out this this little addition it kind of looks like a 1950s. Ranch house. What will the detailing actually be up there."
" All gonna do is duplicate what we have on the main house up get up there with -- eighth inch and a half freeze board. We're gonna follow that bed -- rather freeze what is the vertical board. At the top of the clapboard which kind of -- a transition between the clapboard and the Blanchard which is the flat board that comes out. That's correct and then what kind of a molding goes in the corner there. I that's a cornice molding right staff OK there's not a viable three inch more and -- right all right Ando now you've got your corner board in place."
" Here. And this will all be sided with clapboards right that's correct -- claps ready go down yeah we're started just to get ready on that side right there okay. All right so you've actually already begun putting the clapboard -- let's let's review how you figure out. How much exposure to leave and you know what's your first concern here. Well my first concern on mrs. What we have is the existing siding on the house yet and so what we want to do is match these clapboards around the corner so visually as you come you won't know right hand. You know inconsistencies there. -- all what I did is actually took and created a story pole to actually mark the face in the bottom. Course of each one of these going up to that level of care of the siding that we have not taken off so you simply mark them off as the exist and you transfer them over to -- this side."
" That story pole then rests on that clapboard coming across -- that matches the existing clapboard that's coming around from the building right and it you know because it's an old house. Actually if we were to level everything coming across is almost an inch and five eighths differential so what we wanted to do is match that there so. Slowly we transferred that across to the windows and therefore to this side we leveled across that last clapboard on the top and then brought it down on this corner with the story --"
" They used a level way at the top yes got you now let's talk for a second about the climbers before we talk about how you install them I mean Weezer. Red cedar. Red cedar days. And there was a time about a decade ago where a lot of people were installing them with the rough face out instead of the dressed face the dressed face is costing you money. But reason they were doing it is they wanted to more rustic look and they were putting stain which would penetrate because they're afraid regular paint. Without the old fashioned lead additives was gonna flake and and -- what's new with --"
" And nothing much is known once again this is a good her half finished face here so for the smooth side need because of the new chemicals in the paint. The -- about it to the mill glaze that which is what that high speed planer is that goes across the top race -- this could penetrate penetrate and this course will be painted to match the rest of the house work. And you're lining up. The tops. I use the top as a straight line coming across that's what these chalk lines are coming up -- and what that allows me to do is get a nice straight plane from corner to corner right here right and allows me without. Stopping without having -- Lewis and the -- and -- underneath -- did."
" Nice and neat now Tim this is gonna take the better part of today. Yeah I think we're gonna duck inside and see what progress you've made great -- Okay before too long we'll have our deck construction underway so we can get in and out because there's a good four foot difference between the driveway grade and the finished floors in here. We started out with. I sort of a mudroom and a bath in this area. And we've kind of doubled the size in this direction and increased it a little bit in this direction so now. You enter the back. And before you go into the kitchen area you've got a nice big storage closet and you've got. -- generous bathroom space because it includes a corner shower party got it plumbed up. And then a toilet and room for loo lavatory in the corner over here so it's a big improvement over what was here. And then wow. Did the demolition last week. And what we ended up with now is you know a space that will be a modern kind of family room kitchen combination all opened up. We've taken out walls were taken -- but chimney stack but. This find out how life has been here from our homeowner homeowner David smasher about a nice to see how are you good thanks so the demolition went without a hitch."
" Well you know it went it went -- it went pretty well we've been trying to keep it as clean as we can that chimney came down which was very interesting -- well why was -- interesting this is a small chimney that was may be while the size of this footprint here right -- that's correct but we found -- when they took the walls and that there were stoves on every level as you went up through the White House wood burning -- original house yes and -- when they took the chimney down sort of from inside out of -- without having to open up our bedroom. Part of the bedroom wall caved in on behind the bed so there are trying to remove the chimney do. Without knocking down any upstairs wall that's correct and they did a fairly good job that -- I think -- none of us were aware that there would be -- in her bedroom and one point. So what's the otherwise what's the lifestyle here for you and your wife and your little boy on -- we're surviving in LA initially it was a hard to get used to the different entries now that we're using we've got two rooms behind us here. One is what we're calling sort of a safe -- it's got a refrigerator and no construction can -- and there are some this have to worry about crawling on the -- what have you it and the other room is that sort of our television room but because -- our entrance to the house it's been fairly disrupted so where's your temporary kitchen and dining well lit dining room as the -- which is -- summer it's been -- out there in the basement one of the hardest things we've found is the basement is where our sink and stove are so between -- and -- temporary kitchen upstairs and the workable part of the kitchen downstairs is a lot of running about and over cooking your food and things are nice feature we'll just a few more weeks ago but they've done a nice job in terms of anytime you've got a structural wall you're removing it and you're creating had a big open space like this with a flush ceiling. You end up having to do something structural I see what Tim's already got in place up here is a nice big piece of steel that's correct yes and we can tell. From looking at the sides that he's included. Probably a double two by eight on each side of the flange of the steel for nailer. And then the existing joists were -- cut back. And re hung onto the nailer that's part of the -- So that was complicated. -- you don't -- these -- was they were here -- offered a day at least just doing that but it was very interesting to see them build it out in the driveway and bring it up in just slide it right into place right now. And so what we end up with is. But the dimensions are about 28 feet 27 actually says. 27 and of course. You go back out to the patio through the doors that we installed last week yeah and where we're really enjoying just right now are it is like the kind of the great just a few more weeks yeah."
