Installing Cherry Cabinets

Tim Berky is installing the Merillat cherry cabinets in the remodeled kitchen in Rowley, Massachusetts. Bob remarks that redoing the floors and bringing them to level makes the installation much easier. Berky adds that the new cabinets will be level to within 1/8 inch. Bob reviews the cabinet features, including the track system and compression closing device that prevents pinched fingers. The drawers are dovetailed wood with solid cherry faces. The cabinet boxes are pressboard that is gusseted for strength at the corners. Berky is installing the base wall cabinets with cabinet screws that have a broader head for a better hold. He has premarked all of the studs before drilling so that he will get a solid seat for the screws. Berky roughs in the cabinet, shims it, checks for level, then screws the cabinet into the wall and through the adjoining face frame before trimming off the shim. Berky finishes the installation by dressing out the toe kick with a cherry-stained board that he glues and nails in place. Bob looks at the glass-front upper cabinets and the island that is made to look like an Italian-style table with floating legs and rails. Berky secures the legs to the floor to avoid movement or damage.

" All right we're joining Tim now who is a continuing with the installation of the Merillat cabinets you obviously don't need and we that when -- it's that. And you know one of the great advantages of doing a complete rehab to an older house like this is that you have the option. Digging new plumb and level surfaces. That's correct and we worked a little bit on the floor is before we're able to put -- right therefore give us a much better finish so almost every cabinet bottom cabinets to go to put an end practically. Nice and level right went within about any evidence that just a small ship okay. Let's look at some of the features of our Merillat cabinets here one of the things I like and I think is very important in cabinets kitchen cabinets in the drawer construction look at the system that we got here. For the track system we've got here for the -- if if if you look at the whole -- the way it operates it won't catch your fingers. But it does that. Which I think is awesome also you look at the construction of the drawer box itself the size in the front are dovetailed together. And then the face panels which are solitary. Arm attached through to it. But that's always been great thing to have because you don't want to catch little fingers or big fingers. In the in the in the kitchen the construction of the boxes and sauces. Pressed board. But the corners are wrong gospel dissident with a solid piece and -- this is the island in your hand in hand. But the and so we've got a quarter inch piece with the cherry veneer on it we'll look at some of these decorative features a little bit later but let's. Look at what Tim is doing right now. I assume as we said they go to that box doesn't need any shift its it's it's just fine and level it's pretty close we just you know touch in the front corner. OK how they actually being attached. Actually using a two and a half inch cabinet true. Now what makes that -- cabinet screw is just that ahead. Right here on the backside versus a regular sheet rock screw then they'll catch more of the surface holding it. Right. And so you've already measured off on the wall where all your two by four's are right. Hammer the stud lines here here here. That way as I can pull up the backside of the cat and align my holes into the well actually catch the stud. Good time. Okay. How we look at it right on. All right so now we have another box just like it next to it right in this -- with two doors. Sure you don't want it don't get. Those fronts are pretty aren't they aren't they don't have any handles on it yet. But there's a nice simple panel. Now will you need any shimming on the bottom of this one. One's gonna require just a little piece in the front corner. You just rough it in like that yet. And eventually when you've cut the excess off it'll be hidden right now. We're still right on the level. When you do about joining the face frames of these two right here. -- here is actually take a constant. -- We've got the face frame to match right here so we're gonna pilot a hole through the side. So that's gone through the first part of the face trim and into the second part of the other cabinet there. All right we're using this kind of screw to fasten the two face frames together when you called it that's a two inch deck screw. Okay here. -- Now that shim shingle in the front corner has raised the cabinet up the almost eight of an inch. And Tim is just scoring the shim. Snapping it. Still a little bit of the shimmer since the united solid footing. Now the front of the toe kick will be dressed out. With this strip that's got the cherry stain on it are you gonna just nail into. Actually gonna put a little Edith. Construction he's on the backside of now we're ready to go ahead and fasten them. And this outer edge will just be. Stained cement. I'm the opposite wall we've placed in storage like China storage down here with solid panel. And then up here we've got these doors that have the of the glazing and the craftsman style. Martins so there's a nice combination of the two and now are you ready to work with the the island has the look. A table so you've got this first decorative leg. And you already pre drilled there. And this rail comes across and floats out here. Where we have the second leg goes in place are you gonna. Clamp it. Or just hold it I'll just -- you can do the pilot room. About a second screw on the underside. All right so now we've got the three sides built of what looks like an Italian style table. And I think probably we'll add some support in here some solid -- maybe even a gusset at both of these outside corners of course the countertop will really give -- lots of strength. What do you think about where the leg actually sits on the floor. I think what we'll do is it putting me hole here and drive a small screw actually securing it to the floor secure it to the floor great it's gonna be beautiful."

Hanging Cabinets
Hanging Cabinets

Here are some things to think about when you're hanging your own kitchen cabinets. Hang your upper cabinets first, so the lower cabinets won't be in the way. Snap a level chalk line to align the countertops. Use shim shingles to level them, then use drywall screws to secure your cabinets to the wall studs.

Kitchen Cabinet Installation
Kitchen Cabinet Installation

Bob meets with Charlie who has all the cabinets in place except for a final one that will go on one side of the new Thermador range. Charlie explains that when installing the cabinets Jimmy first determines the high point in the floor since old houses tend to be out of level. Then he draws a level line across the wall from the high point and shims the cabinets up so that the tops correspond with the level line. The shims will later be hidden by a toekick. Then he installs the cabinets centering the sink base on the wall and working his way across. The cabinets are fastened together with the doors off by driving screws through from one stile to the next. The doors are put on after the cabinets are installed. Next Charlie and Bob work on installing the final cabinet, checking for plum and level and shimming where necessary. Charlie drills a hole through the back of the cabinet and into a stud and drives a screw in to secure it in place.

Installing French Doors
Installing French Doors

Tim Berky has the rough opening prepared for the installation of the inswinging French doors. The doors come with temporary handles for installation that will be removed as the assembly is set in place. These Pella French doors have a triple-latch system that latches at the top, middle, and bottom for additional security. The door set with handles and locks is made of oil-rubbed bronze to combat the damaging effects of salt air.

Tips on Fixing Squeaky Floors
Tips on Fixing Squeaky Floors

Bob talks with Howard Brickman of Brickman Consulting about how to fix squeaky floors. Brickman first he checks the moisture level in the joists to make sure it is in a normal range. Changes in moisture content cause wood to shrink and swell, which contributes to making floors squeak. Brickman reviews some of the cross-bracing that has been put in place to help make the floor stiffer. Having floorboards that run at an angle rather than perpendicular to the joists gives the floor more strength. Brickman explains how to fix a squeak, by first determining where the squeak is located, either between the sub-floor and the top of the joist or between the wood floor and the top of the subfloor. Brickman thinks the problem is between the wood floor and the sub-loor based on the sound of the noise. Screws are driven from the basement into the the sub-floor, pulling the wood floor and sub-floor above down and pressing them close together. A 2x4 is drilled into the top of the joist and the bottom of the subfloor to reduce the squeak by pulling the subfloor down tight to the joist. Brickman then discusses the use of shim shingles and construction adhesive to reduce squeaky floor noise when they are driven home between the joist and the subfloor.
