Custom Trim, Windows, and Pocket Door

New custom Pella windows give a view onto the yard from the dining room. The windows are trimmed out in custom millwork that was created from a profile of the original trim in the house. The crown molding in the room complements the period architecture. General Contractor Tim Berky explains how the profile from the original woodwork was revealed, copied, and reproduced for around $2,000. He then shows Bob how he installs the trim pieces, first by filling the gaps at the door edges with expanding foam, then gluing and nailing the trim boards around the sides. Reproduction rosettes trim out the corners of each window and door. Bob looks at the four-panel cherry pocket door that has been installed between the mudroom and kitchen space. Berky nails the trim around the pocket door, being careful not to drive any nails into the door enclosure. On the deck, Bob looks at the deck bench with radial back that is an architectural solution for a tricky corner railing situation.

" OK well things are really very very far along and are kind of remodeled kitchen dining room is fast. Fast getting to complete but let's look at some of the detailing that's going in right now. All the walls will be paid it no wallpaper -- anything but we've rebuilt this entire bay window or Oriel with new Pella windows and all the trim -- you can see how how -- is when when -- trim work to match what was here the original parts of the -- the -- and cottage. Have this type of detail where it's a square block with a rose that led into it. And we've copied it so that I think it's a good investment and of course. Double hung. Two over one which is typical of the rest of the house and we're gonna be spending much of our time creating gardens today but this whole orientation means that when -- in here. You'll always be able have a nice view of the newly built two deck and the garden beyond its and that the trim work. In in the room is kind of meant to imply that it's an old house of the crown molding is very appropriate at the top. Just around the dining room part of it and then the corners of the new opening have been cased out. And the molding has been turned around it so that once it's all painted to look relatively be a good match to what's in the rest of the house. This which we installed last week is almost complete we're just we've just received our. Our panels that go here to dress it out when opening the monsoon. And as I say it's a little details but the carpentry of course is where all of the the beauty comes together and let's check in over here with our contractor Tim. So this is looking beautiful now before you put that in and what have you -- did. Cut the drafts out from through here we we took a minimal expansion foam and have -- this that was supplied by the window -- this stuff yeah they're basically an expanding foam. And you have to be carefully and don't put too much in right right but it does a great job stopping the draft. All right so all of this and trim stock was made to replicate what's in the original."

" Of our little queen and how that's correct how do you do that we actually took original casing off of one part of the original home. We actually took the cut. We cut this piece right here so we can get the profile. As they paint layers that are in there distort the actual profile that's going on did you can't just take ascribe to it beaches -- so much paint on the other side that you wouldn't get the crispness. Yes the details and what about the the the blocks of here same thing with a rose we were. Remove one of the rosette cut that in half to get the same profile. And then they have to actually cut a knife right. Right we we take a steel knife. Piece of five carbide steel right and put that profile on the knife right -- through it shape threat. And then we probably spend a thousand bucks on the whole thing -- A little bit more -- on this end up in about 2000 for the trim details okay to match all right so are you. Nailing and others -- Blue stuff. We'll glue supplement act. Marty I'm sure it's plumb and so. Ago. It's not frustrating it. It."

" And actually what we've done is we've. Rebuilt on an area that was here we have is a -- of just under five feet in this direction. And just under fifteen feet in that direction which includes a coat closet and new entryway or mudroom. And fullback -- there that's a lot to fit into this area. Which is one reason why we have a pocket door. Dividing the -- from the bathroom and we've have the guys from woodport supply and they're made out of solid cherry. Which course will match the kitchen cabinets when -- doubt it's beautiful four panel door. And the same trim goes on there right yes. Okay. Where you get started -- does it matter left to right now it doesn't matter not a one detail we want to pay attention to because this is a pocket door. We're not able to nail in this space right here -- we actually use a panel adhesive on the backside right you don't want to get any nails through. The wallboard into the actual door that's there. That would be big to."

" And we're just pinning it then. And did -- Right this is set up the reveal on this side right now."

" All right that's fabulous -- very very appropriate. And so out here what we have is. You know -- relatively complicated set of steps and deck this is just for our entry for one solution to a little problem that we had here with -- corner posts was. To create a radius back here on the railing and turn it into a bench very -- solution."

Pocket Door Installation

Gilson Novaes from Gilson Interiors uses a bullet-nail gun to install a steel plate directly to the concrete floor for the partition wall that will hold a pair of pocket doors. When open, these doors will create a five-foot opening and give the apartment a great-room feel in the main living space. The standard prefab pocket doorframes are screwed to the steel framing and leveled. The advantage of using the prefab doors is that the framing serves is both wall and door framing, eliminating the need for second wall to hold the drywall. Bob also looks at the advantages and versatility of steel studs.

Architectural Glass Panels for Pocket Doors
Architectural Glass Panels for Pocket Doors

Bob shows the double pocket doors that separate the living and private spaces of the Miami condo. The wall between the living room and bedroom has been torn down, along with the closed closet spaces, recesses, and bathroom of the dated apartment. The new space is more loft-like, and the pocket doors will let the rooms function as one big space unless privacy is desired. The doors' glass panels are tempered art glass from Bendheim with a leaf pattern that allows light to enter the space, but obscures the view into the bedroom for privacy. The goal of the remodel and the new open floor plan was to bring light from the windows into the interior of the apartment. Bob looks at a number of glass options that were considered for the pocket doors, including a new version of etched glass, and laminated glass with Japanese rice paper embedded between the layers.
