Expanded Outdoor Living

The Mashers' Victorian remodel includes an expansive outdoor deck to bring indoor living outside. Bob looks at the western red cedar deck that creates the transition from indoors to the gardens and yard planned by Ruth Foster. Meg Tarvin from FrontGate joins Bob to look at the furnishings that recreate this space as an extension of indoor living. Starting on the deck, Tarvin shows Bob the teak table with a stone center that turns and functions as a lazy susan. The teak chairs and umbrella are upholstered in a Sunbrella fabric to live up to year-round northern weather. Below the deck, an outdoor room is furnished with a wicker-look synthetic couch and chairs with Sunbrella-covered cushions. The seating and the elegant rug are synthetic and intended to live outdoors in all kinds of weather. To keep outdoor living comfortable, FrontGate has provided a Mosquito Magnet to attract and trap biting insects and a firepit for warmth and ambience.

" Now part of the assignment for this remodeling project wasn't just the kitchen dining area but also the outside living area and so what we've built is an expansive. Out. Outside deck area. That is it really beautifully designed so that it gets here at the same level. From the kitchen to where you can have your outdoor dining and then again the transition from the deck at this level. Down into the gardens. Now all the construction of the deck was very carefully done by our man Tim here out of western red cedar which is a wonderful choice of material for this kind of construction it doesn't require much in the way of finishes or sealing and it's going to. Stand up to the weather for a long long time. Ruth Foster. Put in a flower garden down there as well as reseeding the part that was damaged and it -- Chose a number of trees and shrubs that will get big and give us privacy for this whole yard but right now we've furnished the deck. Or rather we've had some help with meg carving from frontgate who's here when -- hi thanks welcome. Now you what -- things that I loved seeing when you started assembling all of this was."

" The bright color of the umbrella beautiful colors this -- the sunbrella fabric and the cushions match and so we're all coordinated here and it's kind of like lead."

And deck into an extension of the interior living space -- key things again is carefree living and not having to put everything away in the winter in the garage right everything we brought today is made to be outside and to withstand the elements this -- teak -- isn't it it is and you can see how rich it is this is solid -- it's beautifully finished in this will age beautifully now what's with this big black circle in the middle here this is actually -- down. -- since so nice about will hold up in the freezing cold snow the ice the heat."

" Various types."

" And then the chairs again are also made out -- it would write all the hardware is stainless steel so that's can withstand the elements as well thanks and he chairs are adjustable the -- back but what about what's on the table this this from the catalog as well yes this is also -- is great to have outdoors. It looks like pottery it's it's the unbreakable. And all in the same with the glassware. Keep out to that wonderful. And then what about the beautiful urns that look like antiques over here these are great piece by frank hates him these are actually. A limestone and fiberglass composite to may look like old -- but they're lightweight. And they're not nearly the cost of a solid --"

" Yes yes and you can leave it out all winter long right yes yes wonderful now. -- Well our terrain here it's. Slopes away from the house of one of the things that they had to do was figure out how to design a set of steps and a way of flowing down into another part. Of the backyard which is our patio this good panacea you've furnished that area so meg what is it that you put in here I mean look -- wicker furniture."

" it does this actually our Allegra collection and mrs. outdoor furniture. It's a synthetic all weather. Strand that is tightly woven around an aluminum frame OK so this can stay out year round. It's weather resistant it's fade resistant mildew resistant what about all the pushed out. These are some ground. This is a patented technology that takes propane and changes the propane into carbon yeah now and it's got a flame that's burning no no and it doesn't have a fly strip or any kind of sticky stuff it actually it's. Attracts the mosquitoes that sends out the carbon dioxide. With an attractive -- so and as the mosquitoes come close."

" There's a fan that sucks them up -- that little bag so you actually are catching them live in here right they do end up alive in there and -- making hydrate and then you just have to shake out a little bag oh yes there's a couple of yes like there is an audience that it definitely me and then one final item that sounds to me like a lot of fun what do you call this right this is the fire head."

Installing Kitchen Cabinets
Installing Kitchen Cabinets

The new kitchen space in the Miami condo has been opened up and brightened. Bob meets with LesCare cabinet representative Brad Brewster, of Princeton Custom Cabinetry, who explains the features of this semi-custom cabinet line. Bob has selected a standard white, contemporary style that features invisible hardware, undermount drawers, and edge-banded finishing that completely encases the fiberboard core. The cabinets look seamless, and almost completely eliminate off-gassing thanks to the edge-banded design. Brewster shows Bob the kitchen layout and the lazy Susan that spins 360 degrees to provide full access to the corner cupboard. Bob prices out the kitchen cabinetry and counters per running foot and finds it to be an affordable, elegant, easy-care solution for the getaway kitchen.

The kitchen is set for company, but the counters are clean and uncluttered. Appliances in white complement the adjacent living space in this open-plan apartment. The Whirlpool double-door refridgerator in white, with lots of storage and features, blends with the oven and cooktop, also from Whirlpool, and the Energy Star dishwasher with high-end features like wine-glass racks and special wash cycles. Bob challenged the crew to outfit the kitchen completely by shopping online from Sears.com. Juicers, pots, pans, blender, combination microwave-convection oven, coffee grinder and brewer, were all selected, delivered, and tucked away in this getaway kitchen designed for easy entertaining.

Tour of an Affordable Home
Tour of an Affordable Home

Bob and developer John Druley walk through a home under construction by Qualker Homes in Falmouth, Massachusetts. This standard design is used for both the market-priced and affordable homes. The overall dimensions of the house are 26 feet by 36 feet. A center-door entry leads to 13-by-18-foot living room on one side and a 16-by-13-foot master bedroom on the other. The back of the house has a 13-by-18-foot kitchen with a back door and a window onto the backyard, a half-bath and laundry, and an entry to the master bedroom with full bath, tub-shower combination, double-bowl sink, and linen closet. The upstairs has two bedrooms with operable skylights and a full bath. This three-bedroom, two-and-one-half bath Cape will be lotteried as an affordable home to eligible families who make between $29,000 and $65,000 per year, and who qualify for a traditional mortgage. The home is stick-built with traditional 2X4 framing, oriented strand board (OSB) exterior sheathing, low-e glass, tilt-in vinyl windows, and gas heat. Bob and Druley point out that an affordable home must be affordable to operate and heat as well as being affordable to purchase.
