Bathroom Tile for Walls and Floor

Bob looks at the tiles selected for the bathroom with homeowner and contractor NIck Beasley. They first look at the hexagon tile on the floor that is well-suited to an 1890s home. Beasley then shows Bob the white subway tile for the main field of the wall and the decorative glass tile for the edges. All of the tile is from Daltile. With work yet to be done, Bob wishes Beasley and his wife good luck as they anticipate the due date for their baby in just one week.

Selecting Artisanal Glass Tile for the Bathroom
Selecting Artisanal Glass Tile for the Bathroom

Bob meets homeowner Jeanne Sanviti-Masher to talk about the demands of the project and plans for the new mudroom. Sanviti-Masher says the new space is designed with a closet so family members can enter and shed wet or muddy clothes. The new bathroom will be tiled in unique, artisanal tiles from Trikeenan Tileworks in Keene, New Hampshire. Sanviti-Masher shows Bob some of the samples, included a fired glass tile that has colored glass embedded in the tiles that melts and becomes luminescent. She also explains that they will be using feature tiles in their design and shows Bob one of the samples.

Applying Glazed Wall Tile in the Bathroom
Applying Glazed Wall Tile in the Bathroom

Rob Shedrofsky from Davinci Stone explains the tiling process to Bob as the Porcelanosa wall tile is installed in the bathroom. A glazed clay tile is being used on the wall, while the floor will be done in a porcelain tile that is super strong and only inch thick. The wall tile is a Subway design, replicating the look of the New York Subway on a larger format. Shedrofsky explains how the datum line is used to create a tile layout that is centered from top to bottom and side to side for a pleasing look. The tiles are applied to the wall with an petroleum-based mastic and a -inch notch trowel. The mastic is less expensive than thinset, sets up quicky, and prevents sagging or dipping tiles. The tiles have an -inch joint that is held by spacers for 24 hours while the job cures. After 24 hours, the spacers are removed and an unsanded white grout is applied to blend the seams into the tile and give a sleek, urban appearance.

Glass Tile Installation in the Shower
Glass Tile Installation in the Shower

Test The walls in the shower are nearly complete as the crew gets ready to grout the Vitrus GlassTile they've installed. Bob shows how glass tile differs from ceramic tile, giving an artistic, light-filled, fluid-green look to the bathroom. Bob also explains the special grout that is used to completely mildew- and stain-proof the tiles. Lichen-colored SpectraLOCK grout, with a Microban mildew inhibitor, is mixed with Glow Dazzle, which will give a luminous green complement to the Vitrus tile. This epoxy grout completely seals the tile installation, will not discolor, stain, or change the effect of the glass tile over time. Bob watches as the epoxy grout is applied, first in a thick layer, then pushed into every crack between the tiles.

Bob visits with Mike Bennet, who is floating mortar bed walls in a bathroom. Starting with 15# felt paper then expanded diamond metal lathe held on by galvanized nails. In one of the common occurrences in construction the entire shipment of the tile did not arrive at the same time.
