Organic Sleeping Products for Baby's Health

Bob talks with Ginny Turner of Ecobaby Organics and Pure Rest organic baby bedding products. Turner explains that many bedding products are made from synthetic materials, which are cheaper but may negatively affect our health. Turner explains that flame retardants known as PBDEs were used in manufacturing mattresses but have since been recalled and banned by states as their negative effects on health become more widely known. Turner then reviews a baby mattress developed by her company that can accomodate a child from birth to six . The mattress is made of several layers or plates that are different firmness levels. The first layer is the firmest, for the newborn baby. As the baby grows, the softer layers can be put on the top level. The cover for this mattress is made of organic wool, organic cotton, and natural rubber. The organic wool acts as a moisture and fire retardant. The price range for an organic mattress is around $250 to $400. Turner also shows Bob accessories including a wool puddle pad on top, which is more breathable than rubber. Babies do not lay directly on this pad as it is too scratchy, so an organic cotton pad can be put on top instead. Organic cottons are pesticide-free with no added chemicals during the manufacturing process. Turner also shows Bob an organic crib bumperfor protecting the edges of the crib and reviews other products such as sheets, crib ruffles, and baby clothes; all of which are made of organic cotton.

" Right now Ginny turner is will this -- and you have developed a whole line of totally organic natural products that have to do with. Baby bedding and the like right yes yes."

" What we've done is we have taken a need for or. Organic products because there are less synthetic products available at -- is in the majority of the mattress industry all synthetic. Is it synthetic is very inexpensive to make of course and and it's mass marketed. So all the mattresses that are made generally will contain things like finals -- contain chemical contaminants which we call flame retardant. "

" It's say we have developed what what are some of the problems with using products that have you know this and flame retardant chemicals and and and so forth."

" Tell us health plays. There are some major chemical contaminants that are very popular in matches both children and adults yet these are DP VC east. And in August of 2003 we became very aware as a society about this chemical and how bad it is far health. In the meantime of course all the states have been trying to recall and ban this chemical and he's taking very long time -- So in the meantime we still have these chemical flame retardant in all of our mattresses that we sleep on including the ones that our babies sleep on tonight."

" So this is a very important alternative to learn about and to have this is the baby mattress right and what are some of the features -- we look at that."

" Well -- the features and this is one of our highest end mattresses. Paul we've developed this mattress for parents can use and that's are very long time. That children can be in a mattress from when they're born until about six years old really -- talk about the size of it works but I noticed there's several layers here which -- what we've done is we've taken. Three different furnaces firmness levels for the -- we put the firm one on top for a newborn baby so that you want the firm -- For the newborn baby absolutely and that gives them that firm surface -- surface that is recommended for renewable cry as a baby grows they no longer need that firmness level and they -- and yet they do get heavier incident and displace this is gonna feel. Very. This firm to them here they want more softness. And this is it a comfort thing so they want to put. One of the other layers either the medium Leo with a soft layer. On top you can even flip this mattress over if that's easier you don't want to change the plates it so you got. From firm to soft to softest exactly IC."

" And then what -- where's the cover just natural materials."

" Yes in this industry on people are using organic wool organic cotton and natural rubber but what about fire retardant and we use the organic -- is the layer right under the organic cotton that you see on top. And this is your natural flame retardant -- not only know is actually a natural flame retarded."

" How expensive or."

" Favor -- anywhere you can get organic mattress anywhere from about 250. Up to about 400 dollars. OK and then there's a whole line of accessories that go for the for the crib right there is. What do you want to do obviously is protect your mattress right so you put a wool puddle pad on top not rubber. Not -- not readable. So you want what want -- gives you breathe ability than natural flame retardant and the natural moisture resistant -- could be a little scratchy on baby's face threat great that they literally directly on this. They don't need him you conflicts and organic cotton pad on top movement and this will absorb -- especially the toddler -- smart yeah you could put this on top. And then you cover all that with a sheet."

" Okay. So when you say organic cotton -- it means it's grown."

" Without any kind of chemical fertilizers or pesticides being used in the growing operation is yes yes not only that organic cotton goes a step further and it goes into the processing of the fabrics because. We grow them with pesticides generally and and then they're processed with more chemicals added yet. So we do an organic industry is we don't add any of those chemicals everything's naturally processed so there's no chemical -- into effect they fabulous. And then you've got on the other things that would you call these things are put around this isn't crib bumper to protect the edges of the trip right. So that's organic cotton. That you have things to dress up your crib of course we've got various sheets there's trip ruffles. We've. Done the whole ensemble everything organic cotton wonderful and then you also -- clothing that. You're demonstrating yes yes we -- these are some of the clothing you'll use with a brand new baby. These are -- at items he knew you'd see gut kimonos these are called snap kimonos -- that great great take me home I remember these things here."

" It's a great idea to market products like this that are all natural Ginny thank --"

Installing a Home Back-up Generator
Installing a Home Back-up Generator

Ron Ford from Kohler Power Systems joins Bob to talk about the 22-kilowatt backup generator that has been installed. The generator is permanently connected to the home's main power distribution center and will keep important household appliances (including furnaces, refrigerator, security systems, and computers) running in the event of a power outage. Powered by natural gas and is insulated to minimize noise, the generator automatically supplies electricity in the event of a power outage without having to be switched on by the homeowner. It will even kick in if the homeowner is away from home.

Direct Vent Fireplaces for Heat and Ambience
Direct Vent Fireplaces for Heat and Ambience

Bob visits a Heat n' Glo showroom where Ross Morrison shows him a variety of direct-vent gas fireplaces. With a sealed glass chamber there is no interplay of of room airno products of combustion will get into the room and it doesn't use any of the the room's already warm air for combustion. The fireplace inserts come with ceramic fiber logs. When the flames hit the logs they produce a nice glow. The logs are light, unbreakable, and last a lifetime. Ross shows Bob the 6000 TRXI, a premium model that is rated as a furnace. It has a beautiful masonry appearance inside and a pumps out enough BTUs to heat a 1200 - 1500 sq. ft. house. The fireplace also offers the option of turning the flames down or off or opening the climate control damper to cut the heat by one half.

Clean House = Lower Bills
Clean House = Lower Bills

Here's another great tip from BobVila.com. It may seem like a bit of a stretch to think of housework as a money-saving endeavor but, believe it or not, dirt can cost you money. For instance, did you know that if enough dust builds up on your refrigerator coils it can burn out the cooling fan and overheat and destroy the motor? That s a very expensive repair or replacement you can avoid. Run a vent brush under the fridge to clean the coils and vacuum them thoroughly with the brush attachment each season. Be sure you unplug the fridge first, though! Vacuum baseboard heating units often to help them radiate more efficiently. Clean out your dryer vent every couple of months to help it dry your clothes faster. Dirt can hide where you least expect it. Unscrew the aerator from the end of your kitchen faucet and check for sediment that could be reducing your water flow. Make sure you get the benefit of the light you re paying for: dirty glass on porch and overhead light fixtures, sconces and even windows can actually block a lot of light. Dirty furnace filters make your heating system work harder and cost you more. Next time you re at the hardware store, buy a few extra filters and date them so you ll remember to change them regularly. If you have an electronic air filter, don t wait until the cleaning light is blinking red; frequent cleaning lowers costs. Find out more at BobVila.com: The ultimate home improvement web site!
