Remodeling the Master Bathroom

Bob talks with Nick Beasley, owner of the Melrose home, about the layout of the home before and after remodeling. The house previously featured a half-bathroom off the master bedroom and a full bathroom off the hallway, so the layout was reversed during remodeling. Beasley reviews some of the work that had to be done for this including demolition, replacing the old plumbing, reframing, and re-leveling the floor. New Pella two-over-one windows were installed in the master bathroom, which are in keeping with this older home. Bob reviews the installation of the Corian tub deck in the master bathroom, which was custom made using a digital template. Appropriate colors were then chosen for the bathroom to create flow to the master bedroom. Because of the layout of the bathroom, a half-wall was installed at one end of the bathtub. Bob reviews how Classic Glass of Stoneham, Mass., worked with the tile to install the glass and mount the curtain rod for the bathtub. Bellacor lighting fixtures were selected to complement the home's character and style. A pedestal sink was installed and a beautiful hexagon tile floor helps unify the whole room. Beasley demonstrates how the new window shades can be raised from either the top or the bottom.

" Nick Beasley our homeowner swimming out and a minute ago we were in. The half bathroom this right off of -- key hall and the living room et cetera right now we're in the new master so architecturally you kind of flipped things right correct. We knew we moved in there's a little tiny half bath off the master bedroom in the main bathroom was off the hallway and to reverse that thank you be nicer to have. And little half bath that our guests could use and come and -- and we get our own private bathroom here exactly makes a lot of sense you to you had to do a lot of demolition flood demolition theater redo all the plumbing has it been a lot of you -- plumbing that wasn't very good a lot of irrational had to pull out very and then and the floors were out of level and have been hacked up by the previous plumbers that we redid all that sure well structurally and then. Related out."

" So exactly so we've added new windows from Pella which in this case. I guess they're -- who have the -- one -- is that the two over two over one -- one which again is in the feeling of this 1890s house -- couple original windows left from the house and they were two over ones we -- chose these to match right. I think Uniroyal Goodrich -- with color choices around here out of the Corian tub surround is in terrific blue shade. -- and of course we have the folks from sterling out here who did a magnificent job of figuring out how to. Do the template. For the tub using digital photography and computers and really impressed very impressive and it came out perfect and of course you picked wall color that matches. The bedrooms of the master bedroom and the master bath all flow together very nicely. I really like what you've done as a solution for not having glass doors or not having just a shower curtain when you've got. A situation like this time here we're just over half."

" Well one hand. This was an interesting glass installation done by our friends at classic glass here in stone in Massachusetts. It involved finding a plumb line and drilling through the tile. Starting with a center punch so the drill won't wobble and damage the tile then inserting plastic wall anchors. The aluminum channel was made to accept three eighths inch tempered glass. It was screwed to the wall using three stainless steel screws to prevent any corrosion. On the bottom of the glass they applied a vinyl cushion that adhered to the edge to seal the joint and take up any variation between the surfaces."

" When their classes center place upside down."

" They dry fit everything to be sure all dimensions are correct. Texture. Ushered. In here. She went into the shower curtain rod is held in place with a traditional chrome bracket. At the other -- they used a specially made fitting that allows a bolt to go through the glass. It threads right into the rod and is tightened with a very small Allen wrench. After everything was dry fit successfully. The guys reassembled it using silicone adhesive for a permanent installation and it looks great."

" All right so let's talk about on the lighting fixtures he's are all from Bellacor. And like so many components in remodel today you go online. And you do year's elections rhetoric they're great website really easy to use in this huge selection yet so you've gotten these which are sort of a modern take on. Old fashioned glass shades that would've been hung. Over. You know over. A sink in here you've got a terrific American standard pedestal sink. Which I think aesthetically works very very well I mean your choices are good for an 1890s house being rehab in the 21 century the floor is terrific. Thank you. Well it's a very very good job of unifying the whole thing. And these windows are not like the ones that I -- we put in the nursery room where we have the Pella inserts how to how these work these are from Smith and Nomura."

" Right these are top down bottom up shades they can neither. Operate like your traditional shade they might come up now order. Come down from the top as well which we thought in the bathroom would be nice since it gives you privacy. But I also allows the light in his well it works very well great well there's still Morrissey."

Bathtub & Surround Repair
Bathtub & Surround Repair

Here's another great tip from BobVila.com. If your bathtub has seen better days, make sure you know your options before you break out the crowbar. Bathtubs and their surrounding walls are one of the most likely places you ll find water damage. If you see cracked tile or failing grout or caulking, there s almost certain to be water damage of some sort to the wall, the subfloor or even your home s structure. If you know your tub surround has been leaking for a while, you should never just cover it up with a new tub wall and liner. Mold and mildew trapped behind the walls and floors can multiply and continue to damage your home s structure and your family s health even if you can t see it. Serious mold eradication may require the help of a professional to be sure it s completely gone before you renovate. Let s say you remove the old tile and substrate and find no water damage. You can renew your tub or shower area without the expense, effort and environmental cost of junking your old tub. If it s stained or chipped or you don t like the color, having your existing cast-iron tub re-glazed can save you 70 percent over the cost of buying and installing a brand new one. Acrylic or fiberglass tubs can also be repaired and re-coated for a fresh start. If you do decide to replace your tub, there are lots to choose from. Acrylic, fiberglass and porcelain on steel are the least expensive, and cast-iron is very durable and popular. Vintage clawfoot tubs are seeing a revival. If you ve got the space and the budget, you could sink a tiled roman tub into the floor. Or, check out the new designer stand-alone sculptural tubs. With champagne bubbles, hydrotherapy jets and even TV screens, your tub may become your favorite piece of furniture. Find out more at BobVila.com: The ultimate home improvement web site! A Vintage Tub for a Child's Bathroom
A Vintage Tub for a Child's Bathroom

Bob moves on to the third floor of the Melrose nursery remodeling project to review what has been done in preparation for the baby. The third floor will primarily be a kids' floor and, accordingly, at the top of the staircase a baby safety gate has been installed. Bob reviews the painting work done in the bedroom and then moves on to a room that was previously a home office but is now being renovated to become a child's bathroom. The room has the original beadboard and sits under the eaves of the roof. A small bathtub has been installed in front of the dormer window that has been replaced with a Pella window to prevent cold drafts. Bob reviews the unusual shape of the room. The new, freestanding Vintage bathtub has an antique style. A series of clips shows how the plumber installed the tub and connected the supply and waste lines. Bob then talks with Tara Dick of Vintage Tubs about the bathtub. Dick reviews features of the tub and explains how molds are made from older tubs so that new tubs of the same style can be manufactured. The porcelain finish is made to be one of the most durable in the industry and is capable of resisting cleaning chemicals. The ball-and-claw feet on the tub are made of solid brass with a chrome coating. Fixtures for the tub can be bought from many companies. Dick adds that free-standing tubs offer great flexibility in design and can accomodate any bathroom layout.

Kohler "Champagne" Bathtub Installation
Kohler "Champagne" Bathtub Installation

Up in the master bath a Kohler "champagne" tub has been installed. The tub is designed to be filled to the brim and the framing must support the additional weight of the extra water. The water circulation mechanism produces an action that's more like champagne bubbles than that of a normal spa. Once installed the tub is covered in plywood to protect to during the rest of the construction.
